Denial (47 page)

Grinning, Amy watched her partner approach. She remembered how surprised and delighted Celeste was, when a few months after her recovery, she first broached the subject of having a baby. Amy had laughed at her shocked face. “What?” she said. “You didn’t think we would stop at two did you?”

Alex swallowed and whispered, “She looks like she means business.” He hurriedly told her that he would take the children for a walk along the beach with Colin.

Nodding, Amy let go of him.

Alex went to the edge of the water and rallied the children and Colin.

With a worried frown, Celeste stopped in front of Amy and took her arm. “Naomi said the baby wasn’t well.”

“What?”

Celeste felt for Amy’s pulse.

Enjoying the attention, Amy indulged her for a while, then laughed and tried to explain. “Look, Colin’s been feeding Naomi’s very fertile imagination with daft things like I need to kiss the seashells for good luck. All I said to her was that I couldn’t kiss them because her wee sister might not like it.”

Celeste looked annoyed. “I think it’s time I had a word with Colin.”

Amy smiled then teased, “Colin’s in for it now, isn’t he?”

Celeste nodded and continued to check Amy over before she was satisfied that everything was okay.

Amy looked around. The beach was deserted and Colin and the kids were walking ahead with Alex following behind. She sat down, laid back then looked up at Celeste. “Well. What are you waiting for? There’s no one around.”

Celeste’s eyebrows rose at Amy’s provocative play.

Impatiently, Amy sat up, knowing that Celeste still found it hard to believe that she didn’t mind being so openly in love. “Will you hurry up and kiss me, Celeste!” She raised a hand and warned, “Just don’t touch my breasts,” she said, lying back, “because if you do, you’ll have to finish what you start.”

She looked up at Celeste seductively.

Celeste growled playfully, then dropped to her knees. She lay down, pulled Amy on top of her and gently kissed her. Ignoring Amy’s words of warning she reached for her breasts.

Amy growled.

Celeste quickly held up her hands. Laughing heartily she managed to say, “Okay, okay…let’s trade.”

Smiling, Amy cocked her head and looked at her inquiringly.

Celeste murmured, “If I can touch you,” she pointed at Amy’s breasts, “then I’ll promise no more hijacking you whenever you’re alone!”

Amy smiled sneakily. “That includes public places?”

“No way.”

Amy nodded. “Yes way.”

Celeste sighed. “Oh, c’mon, honey, you’re driving a hard bargain here!”

“And you’re driving me up the wall. I don’t know whether I’m coming or going. Whenever I’m outside, I don’t know when you’re going to pounce.” Amy raised her brow. “You’re like Inspector whathisname with the karate-wielding sidekick…” Amy frowned, “whathisname. He was always ambushing his boss.”

“Not for sex though.” Celeste smirked. “That would make it a very different movie, wouldn’t it?” She laughed and said in a ridicules French accent, “Inspector Clouseau gets a big surprise, when ambushing him, Cato prods him with some-zing more than his hands.”

Amy laughed. Eyes twinkling, she kissed the tip of Celeste’s nose. “What’s your decision gorgeous?”

“What the hell, let’s throw in public places too,” Celeste said, placing her hands on Amy’s breasts.

Ahead, Colin was walking with the children.

Trailing behind them, Alex turned and looked back. He shaded his eyes. Enchanted, he watched and grinned when he heard Amy squeal in delight as they play tussled a little.

He thought back to that day when he had confronted her on the beach. He slowly exhaled. Thankfully, that was a lifetime ago and very much a part of their past. He raised his eyebrows when he saw them making out. Smiling, he turned and shouted to Colin to wait up.
