Kade barked out an animal cry of release as he started to come. He stroked his glistening cock over her belly, shooting thick vines over her skin. Their gazes locked within the moonlight. He looked upset.

“I’ve never had problems like this before.”

“What?” she asked, confused.

“I’ve never lost control like this.”

She had this ridiculous need to soothe his ego. She reached out with both hands and tilted his lips to her own. She kissed him passionately. “I like it when you lose control on me.”

Wynn scooted over as he lay down beside her. His hand explored the curves of her body in a slow, lazy motion. She could sense him drifting off to sleep, and she soon followed.

It was much later when Kade pulled her close and nibbled on the curve of her ear. “I have to go. I have to get into work.”

She snuggled closer to Kade, not opening her eyes. “What time is it?” she asked.

“It’s almost dawn. Go back to sleep.”

“I thought you said a woman alone wasn’t safe in the Red.”

“I suppose I was wrong about that.”

Wynn was so tired she couldn’t keep her eyes open. She listened to Kade dress and unzip the tent. She was fast asleep by the time he zipped her back in.

Two hours later, Wynn woke to the sound of birds singing. Her body ached in all the right places. She sat up and looked around her tent and frowned. Something was missing, and it just wasn’t Kade. She grabbed for her backpack and searched it fast. Her climbing shoes were gone.

No shoes. Where the hell were they? They’d been clipped to the side of her backpack. It was then that it hit her. Kade didn’t want her to climb alone. She couldn’t climb without them. He knew that. If she kept up the ruse, she’d have to go after him for them.

She grinned at the turn of events. That
son of a bitch
wanted to see her again.

Chapter Seven

Kade often lived in his office at the station. As the agent in charge, he worked about fifty hours a week, more if there were climbing or hiking accidents in the Red.

Kade wondered all morning if Wynn was going to come after her climbing shoes. He suspected she would. The field office was quiet as he pushed papers around his desk, trying to keep busy despite the thought of Wynn naked just hours before.

There were things he needed to get done at his house, so he started to make a list of all the renovations and things to buy. That only lasted so long before he remembered that Kendra’s birthday was coming up, and he needed to buy her something special like a necklace. He’d have to go into Lexington to do that. There was nothing in or near the Red that would be special enough.

Kade tapped his pencil and then tossed it onto his desk.

His sushi sat untouched on his desk. He’d made the salmon sushi last night and packed it up for lunch this morning. He ate out of need, rather than hunger. Wynn was a distraction on all fronts today. That wouldn’t be good if he was out in the field.

There was something bothering him about Wynn that he couldn’t quite place. It was her personality. There was intelligence and strength in her eyes that warred with her small stature and fear over storms. She was complex and complicated in a way that made him want to know everything about her. Wynn managed to get under his skin in the worst possible way.

Kade was certain that he wouldn’t be able to let her go until he knew everything about her, from her favorite color, to what she loved to eat, to which side of the bed she preferred to sleep on. He had to know all of it.

Something was still bothering him.

Maybe it was the fact that most didn’t camp and climb in the Red alone. It just wasn’t safe. Maybe it was the fact that he couldn’t find any listings for her off Mountain Parkway. He was being nosy, but hell, he wanted to know more about her, like where she lived, for starters.

He was starting to think she wasn’t local. That put a hitch in his chest that felt too much like a chronic case of indigestion. Kade picked up the baseball on his desk he caught when he’d gone with Kendra to a game in San Francisco. He worried the beat-up leather in his hands. Kade stared at his laptop and brought the Internet alive. He went to do a search. He was about to type in her name when there was a knock on his open door.

Kade looked up to see one of his off duty dispatch officers. She was sporting a new bruise on her cheek. Bruises were an issue with the husband who drank. Ann’s dark, curly hair swayed forward to cover her cheeks.

“Got a minute?” Ann asked.

“Sure.” Kade closed the door as she sat down in the chair across from his desk. She fidgeted nervously and wouldn’t meet his gaze head-on. She stared at the pictures of his family on the shelf behind his chair. “What’s up?”

“I need a place to stay for a while. Somewhere he won’t find me.”

“I know the perfect place. Are you packed?” he asked and prayed to the universe that she was.

“Yeah...I’ve filed for divorce, too. He’s angry.”

Kade felt his jaw clench tight. The most dangerous time for a woman was when she was leaving. They had to do this right to keep her safe. “You remember my sister, Kendra?”

“The one who’s blind?”

“That’s the one. She lives across town. It’s secluded. I set her up with state–of-the-art security after her accident. He won’t be able to find you there.”

“I couldn’t impose.”

“You won’t be, and we both know it’s temporary until things settle down,” Kade said.

“I’d want to pay her.”

Kade softened his eyes because he knew she was on the emotional edge. Right then, he was thankful that they had cameras all over the building, and all the entrances were locked. No one got in or out without going through security. “You can work that out with Kendra.”

“Thanks, Kade...I...”

“Don’t even worry about it. I just want you to be safe. I’ll give Kendra a call and work out the details.”

“Okay.” She left the door open when she walked out.

The pencil in Kade’s hand snapped in half in his right hand. Kade knew Ann’s soon-to-be ex well. He stayed at the local watering hole all day before stumbling home. It was only a matter of time before he killed someone on the road or Ann. Kade reached for the phone to call the state boys. He was going to make sure Ann was safe for the rest of her life.

Chapter Eight

Wynn told herself that she was only going after Kade to get her black-and-yellow Scarpa climbing shoes back. They were too expensive to replace so soon. Wynn broke down camp and hiked back to her Jeep in record time.

Instead of going after him right away, Wynn drove to the hotel she was staying in and showered and changed into something that was sure to get his unwanted attention. A copy of Kade’s personnel file was sitting on the other queen-size bed. She couldn’t go there now. What she needed to know most wasn’t in those files. She needed to know about his personal life to rule him out as a suspect. That meant following him wherever he led her.

The Forest Service field office was located within the boundaries of Red River Gorge. Wynn recognized Kade’s truck, from the files, sitting in the parking lot. The government vehicle he’d been using the other day was parked off the side entrance, too.

He was here.

Wynn made sure to park on the far side of his truck. As she got out, she stepped up on the running board and looked around the inside of his truck. Her climbing shoes were on the floorboard. She tried the door, but it was locked.

“I guess you’re looking for your shoes.”

Wynn whirled around to see Kade. He wasn’t in uniform, but there was still that dangerous,
Dirty Harry
glint to his eye. “I thought you had to work.”

“My safety meeting ended early.” His gaze went from the natural shade of her roots to her high heels. “Where you going?”

Wynn felt breathless when he looked at her that way. The sundress was a last summer throwback. “Nowhere.”

“Why don’t I believe you?” he asked himself.

“Can I please have my shoes back?”

“No.”

She let the anger she was feeling flare in her eyes. She went to move around him, but he stopped her with a firm hand on her elbow. “I guess I’ll have to report them stolen.”

“No you won’t. Get in the truck, Wynn.”

“I don’t think so.”

He unlocked it with his remote and opened the door. “Don’t make a scene.”

That hard glint to his eyes warned her not to push him, or he’d punish her in ways she could and wanted to imagine. She wasn’t sure what set him off, but she was dying to know what it was so she could get that look again.

When she saw that look in his eye, she wanted to be put on all fours and spanked, rubbed, and hugged. She wanted to be loved by only him. That thought brought her up short. Wynn didn’t normally have thoughts of being loved or spanked by a man she wasn’t in a relationship with. In fact, Wynn had always wanted a lover to take control and smack her bottom until her panties were wet. Just thinking about him spanking her ass made her nipples tighten. Kade’s gaze dropped to the flimsy material of her dress, and the muscle in his jaw hardened.

He took a step closer, invading her space.

“What are you thinking about?” he asked.

She couldn’t ignore the way his voiced lowered to a seductive whisper. The truth was a weapon she knew she could use against him to win. “Me naked on all fours and you spanking me.”

He groaned and swayed hard against the truck, putting his palm out to catch himself. “Get in the truck where we can talk privately.”

It was when she was stepping inside the cab that Wynn noticed that his windows were professionally tinted out. All of them were except the front windshield. Kade had parked facing the street under the shade of a pear tree. She watched Kade move around the front of the truck and adjust himself as he sat inside. He started the truck without a word and started to drive.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“Someplace we can talk privately.”

Wynn swallowed hard. She knew they wouldn’t be doing any talking wherever they ended up. Kade drove several miles away and up into the deepest and most remote part of the Red, to a place where few climbers and hikers knew about. Wynn let the hem of her sundress ride high on her thighs, and she was certain that Kade knew she wasn’t wearing a bra.

Kade parked the truck and made sure the doors were locked. He kept the truck running with the air-conditioning on high.

“Take off your heels.”

Wynn slipped them off and let them fall to the floor. Anticipation made her heart race, and her pussy fluttered at the thought of being sexed by Kade again. He reached out and nudged the thin spaghetti straps off each shoulder. She shivered as her dress fell and spilled, revealing a hint of her breasts. Kade scooted to the big center part of the cab, bracing his legs wide.

“Straddle me facing the window.”

There was no going back. Part of her was terrified at what was happening between her and Kade. She knew if she fought it, she’d be tempting fate. She wasn’t so sure she wanted to take on something she knew she couldn’t win. Kade became impatient and reached for her wrist. He pulled her easily over his lap, planting her ass right on top of his crotch. Her billowy dress was still settling as his hands ran up the insides of her thighs. He groaned as she arched into him.

He kissed the back of her neck, licking his way up to her ear. His fingers reached higher and were rewarded with a shock of wet heat as he discovered that she wasn’t wearing any panties.

He cursed. “Tell me you don’t normally walk around with no panties.”

“I do.”

“That’s not good. Anyone could force you into their truck and rip that dress off of you.” He groaned, and she heard the jealous tone of his voice.

“Maybe that’s what I want my lover to do.”

Wynn felt his cock jerk within the tight confines of his jeans. He pushed her ass forward, and she braced her palms on the dash. She heard Kade struggling with his jeans. She looked over her shoulder just as she felt the slap of his heavy cock hit against her ass. Wynn rolled her hips back, wetting Kade’s cock with her pussy. She heard a ripping sound and knew it was a condom. Kade lifted her hips off his legs and positioned the plump tip of his sex at the center of her pussy.

“Wynn...”

She heard the desperation in his voice. Kade wasn’t a man that handed his body over so easily. Wynn didn’t want to consider the implication for very long. This couldn’t and wouldn’t be a long-term thing. They were fucking. That was it. Wynn didn’t want to get emotionally close to another man, not even in friendship. The stakes were too high for her heart and her career. What it really came down to was that she wasn’t a woman that could trust at all. That left only one option for them. They’d fuck until they got tired of each other or she eliminated him as a suspect.

Wynn contracted her pussy, making her juices flow down over his shaft. She felt Kade’s hand rub over his shaft, rubbing her honey into his sex.

“You’re killing me,” he groaned.

“I know.”

Slowly, Wynn lowered herself onto his flexed cock. Every muscle in his arms and legs was flexed taut as she lowered onto his thick, aching shaft. The tips of his fingers dug into her hips as she took control of his pleasure. His sex thickened as she moved toward the thick base of his shaft. They groaned in unison as their bodies latched tightly together. Wynn reached between her legs, moving her dress out of the way, to cup his big balls into her hand. For a long moment, neither one moved. Kade groaned as she kept perfectly still and started contracting her core muscles.

She milked his cock until his sex jerked wildly deep within her pussy. She ground her hips in a circular motion and played with his balls. She knew he was desperate to thrust, but she wouldn’t hop up and down until she had her fill. Kade reached up beneath her dress and grabbed her breasts within his big hands. He tweaked her nipples, plucking them with his thumbs and making her forget about her plans to tease him into submission. Kade pushed her forward until her palms were braced on the dash. Kade bounced in and out of her tight pussy, taking her fast and hard. Her breasts bounced wildly in his palms as he worked her sex over as though it’d be the last time they ever got to fuck again.
