    Introduction

Also called as crock-pot, the slow cooker is generally a trademark used in the USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand that utilizes electricity to cook food. The countertop appliance maintains a low temperature and best useful for simmering. The methodology involves simmering the food products at a low temperature for long hours. It allows for the unattended cooking for several dishes such as stews, soups, pot roast, and dinners. Other recipes include desserts and beverages.

The basic design of the appliance includes a round or oval cooking pot with ceramic or porcelain material, surrounded by a metal housing, containing the heating element. The lid is a clear glass and seats in the groove provided within the pot housing. The glass lid helps in condensing the vapor and provides a low-pressure seal. In spite of the atmospheric pressure, the contents of the cooker function efficiently irrespective of the water vapor generated.

The ceramic container acts as heat reservoir and cooking container. The cookers are available in different capacities and begin from 500ml. To prevent uncontrolled heating, manufacturers prescribe a minimum liquid level. The level varies according to the construction of the cooker and the placement of the heating element. In general, slow cookers have one or two heat settings. A few models have variable power adjustment. They do not contain a temperature control and, therefore, offer constant heat to the ingredients within the housing. In addition, when the temperature touches the boiling point, boiling occurs near to the hot surface.

The heating element offers a steady temperature of 79-93°C. The water vapor generated due to the heat condenses on the lid’s bottom surface and returns to liquid. There is a possibility that a few vitamins leach into the liquid. The liquid then transfers the heat from the cooking pot to the ingredients. Along with heat transfer, the liquid is also responsible for spreading the flavors evenly.

A basic slow cooker requires a manual operation, and you have to set the temperature according to the ingredients and time. The advanced cookers’ have inbuilt chipset and timing devices that avoid human interaction. The pre-programmed settings allow the cooker to operate efficiently with multiple operations. Furthermore, slow cookers act as heat reservoirs and, therefore, provide the opportunity to carry it to elsewhere and savor the food.

Unlike the traditional cooking methods, the alteration is necessary for slow cooker recipes. Quantities differ, and so does the amount of liquid required because there is little evaporation. Covering the cooker with a lid is crucial and offers the liquid necessary for cooking the ingredients. The eBook provides the recipes for the slow cooker that offer convenience and fewer ingredients. Apart from robust and cheap cuts of meat, slow cooking is also beneficial for cooking appetizers, beverages, and desserts.

The process of slow cooking delivers advantages. However, a careful preparation is essential to prevent overcooking of ingredients. Overcooking results in loss of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients required for the human body. Other advantages include reduction of cooking vessels because the cooker accommodates many ingredients at a time. Ensure that the volume of the cooker is sufficient to cook food required for the entire family.
