Amongst the IRA weapons decommissioned and put forever beyond use as of this date was a short magazine Lee-Enfield .303 rifle made during the First World War. The old rifle was fitted with a small brass plate proclaiming its place of manufacture: “Winchester Repeating Arms Co., New Haven, Connecticut.”

The author gratefully acknowledges the innumerable contributions made to this book, and to the series of which it is the final volume, by people who were actively involved in the events depicted. There are far too many of them to list by name. Men and women from both sides of the political divide have given unstintingly of their records and their personal memories; memories which sometimes have contradicted the “official” version. Wherever possible the author has chosen to accept the word of the actual participants. Although this is a work of fiction every effort has been made to obtain historical veracity, and no historical event has been re-written for dramatic effect.
A special thanks is owed to the Bobby Sands Trust for permission to use the quotes from the late Bobby Sands that are included in this book
