A Consumer's Guide to Male Hustlers (26 page)

In the same situation, how would things work out for me without a Michael (or one of his colleagues)? Knowing myself, my horniness would win out over my tiredness. I would force myself to stay up until 10 p.m. and then go to a gay bar in the Castro. (Sex clubs are not for me because of the lack of privacy, and I would be too tired to drive out of town to go to the baths.) At the bar, I would spend money to buy myself and others drinks. I would have to listen to loud music I cannot stand. If I were very lucky, sometime after midnight, I would even meet someone who, more or less, appealed to me sexually. (Of course, he would not be a Michael. The latter, a perfect sex partner, had come into my life after a long search.) I would take my bar date home, or go to his place, hoping that he would be sober and that we would be compatible. Because of the lateness of the hour, there would be little time to talk to each other. With luck, we would even have good sex. Not as good as with Michael, with whom I am completely compatible. But, hey, my new partner came for free!

In the early morning, I would have to drive my partner home or return from his place to mine. If he stayed the night, I would have to get up early to make him breakfast and drive him to work.

The $50 for Michael was an excellent investment!

The thrust of this book has been to present hustlers as a readily available resource in the gay community. Unfortunately, it is accessible only by paying for it. Financial well-being is mostly about allocation of resources. I could, for instance, afford an annual cruise on a luxury liner with the money I spend on hustlers. For me, good and frequent sexual sessions are more important than two weeks of invigorating sea air.

There are lots of gay men who feel as I do. However, they won't allocate their resources to hiring hustlers because they believe that they should not do it—they ought to get it for free. My message is: Always try to find a boyfriend or a steady sex partner. But, in the meantime, utilize the services of hustlers. Sex is easier to come by when you are not looking for it compulsively!

Like any other resource, you need to familiarize yourself with the ins and outs of hustling. Do not be discouraged because a few experiences with hustlers did not work out. Learn from your mistakes. You will be able to hire better hustlers in the future. Last, as with any independent contractor, you can work out a deal that would suit your budget, your emotional and sexual needs, and your temperament.

Here's to your success!
