A Deadly Encounter (A Seagrove Cozy Mystery Book 3) (9 page)

“Not to leave Mr. Bradshaw at home when I’m on a stakeout,” she said. “He would have never let Lance get into my car.”

“That’s not what I was hoping you’d learned,” the chief said. “But I’m not surprised. That was a smart move of yours, by the way, driving around the station. You were spotted by several of my officers. They all reported in and I was able to follow.”

“You could have gotten here a little faster,” she said. “I was afraid I was going to be dodging bullets in the water.”

“We didn’t want to move too fast. I wanted to get that gun out of his hand so he couldn’t shoot you.” He wiped a smudge of something from her chin. “That took time to figure out.”

“All’s well that ends well,” she said. “But I’d really like to go home now.”

He dropped a kiss on her cheek and let her go home.

Mr. Bradshaw was upset with her for leaving him at home and wouldn’t get out of his bed when she got home. He gave her a quick glance over his shoulder and then tucked his head under his paw. Sadie didn’t blame him. She didn’t like getting left behind either.

On Sunday Zack picked her up in the jeep as promised. They drove up to the land of arches and walked in the state park before heading for the beach. They’d spent their last date on this beach, and Sadie had fond memories. The events of the night with Lance hadn’t ruined the beach for her. She hadn’t even left the car after all.
