One occasion that left a lasting impression was the day Luechtefeld met the governor by chance as they were leaving the capitol building after a legislative session. “Hey, coach,” Blagojevich called out, using the moniker familiar to Luechtefeld's statehouse friends. In patronizing tones, the governor asked if there was anything he could do for him. The veteran senator was surprised and amused by the obvious insincerity. “Why in the world was he saying he wanted to do something for me?” Luechtefeld thought. Then, in a boisterous tone, the governor said there was someone he wanted the senator to meet. He took Luechtefeld over to introduce him to a member of the capitol security force. “This man is going somewhere in his life,” the governor proclaimed. “Oh, really?” Luechtefeld said with an inquisitive inflection. To Luechtefeld's surprise, the governor asked the man to pull up his pant leg, revealing that his leg was tattooed with the name Elvis. Luechtefeld was bewildered and astonished, and he thought how inappropriate the scene was and how childish Blagojevich's behavior was. This was the governor of Illinois! Blagojevich was fascinated with the entertainer Elvis Presley and surrounded himself with Elvis memorabilia. In meetings with legislators he often quoted lines from Elvis Presley movies that were completely unrelated to anything being discussed.

. The governor lived in Cullerton's district but had become a frequent critic of the new senate president. Despite the residential proximity and similar Chicago political experiences, the two men were vastly different and their relationship was strained. Cullerton was not a member of Emil Jones's leadership team and had no association with the past alliance between Jones and the governor.
