A second chance: Sequel of Against all odds (57 page)

Oh
Cassidy, I'm so happy that you're you again. Don't worry baby,
everything will be fine. We'll start everything from scratch. We'll
have another baby and will be happy again I'm sure.” I said
caressing her face. But she didn't smile at me, her gaze was sad and
empty...

Tyler..
I..”

I didn't let her finish...

 “
Now
that you remember our life together and everything, things will be
different. You're my wife Cassy. You'll return home finally. I have
missed you so much during these months. The house felt so empty
without you. Oh, honey I love so much.”

I kept talking, but she
wasn't listening. Her gaze had gone oddly blank. Then she asked me to
go and call David. I stood up and went out, but he wasn't there. I
went into the waiting room, but he wasn't there either. He had
disappeared. I returned to her..

Cassidy
I can't find him.”

What
do you mean you can't find him.” She asked alarmed.

He's
gone..”

No..
no.. please you have to find him please!” she cried.

I looked at her stunned.

Cassidy,
why are you reacting like this?”

Listen
I need to speak to him. Please find him.”

I
checked everywhere. Maybe he went away..”

No!
Tyler give me your mobile!”

I took the mobile out and
gave it to her. She pressed the buttons in a panic and put the mobile
near her ear. Her eyes full of pain and anxiety...

It's
switched off,” she cried, her voice full of distress. “Where
could he be?”

I
don't know but what does it matter now? I mean I'm here with you
and....”

I
have to see him. Please find him.” she repeated.

But
why? What do you want to tell him?”

I
have to speak to him OK.”

Listen
there is no need to tell him in person that it's finished between
you. He understood. Now that your memory is back he knows that you
can't be with him.” I said. She looked at me in horror and then
started to cry. She hid her face in her hands and then asked me to
leave as she wanted to rest.

I felt miserable. I didn't
know what to think. What did she want to tell David? Surely that it
was finished, that they couldn't be together,I thought as I tried to
persuade myself that I was right. But was this the case? Or she
wanted to tell him that the memory hadn't changed anything and that
she still loved him. I felt my heart squeezing and my stomach hurting
me so much that I couldn't breathe. I went in the waiting room and
there I met Angela and Kylie.

How
is she?” She asked me concerned.

I told her everything; she
cried and was happy that her daughter was back. Kylie was very happy
that finally her mum did remember her. She went hurriedly to her
leaving me and Angela alone.

What's
happening Tyler?” she asked me then. I knew I couldn't fool
her.

David
disappeared.” I said.

What?”

He
was here and then left. I don't know where he is.”

Why
did he leave?”

I
don't know. Cassidy wants to speak to him at all costs. She was
devastated when I told her I couldn't find him.

I
see..” she then just said. “Did you call him on his
mobile?”

Yes,
she did. Angela what are you thinking?” I asked scared to hear
her answer.

Nothing
Tyler.. nothing.”

Do
you think she will still leave me? Do you think she still loves him?”
I asked her.

She looked down averting my
gaze; she couldn't look into my eyes.

I
don't know. I never know what my daughter thinks. I didn't knew it
before, and I don't know it now. Anyway we have to find David.”

OK.”

That day after leaving the
hospital I had gone to his house and knocked, he wasn't there, his
car wasn't there either, he must have gone somewhere. I had tried to
call him again on his mobile, but it was still switched off. Later I
had gone to the hospital again, and Cassidy had cried when I told her
I didn't have news about David. The doctor had told me that they were
keeping Cassidy for the night, but she was going to be dismissed the
morning after since she was OK. The next day, I was there to take her
home with me at last. She hadn't spoken much during the journey home,
and when we arrived home, she had looked around and cried. I couldn't
understand her she wasn't telling me anything. She just shut me out
of her thoughts. I had been caring and loving with her. I had helped
her to shower; I had prepared a meal, I had tucked her in bed. She
thanked me but that was it. She didn't want to talk and spent her
time staring in space. I really wanted to know what was passing
through her mind. She called her mum every day asking news about
David. Then after hanging up she would burst into tears. David had
disappeared. I couldn't understand his behavior. Five days passed and
nothing changed. Cassidy passed her time in her room alone, reading
or trying to work on her assignments that her friend Lexie brought
her after school. She was a nice girl, and I was happy that she came
to visit so often. Cassidy confided in her telling her what she was
passing through. She had told me that David had called the school
telling them he wasn't coming back and to replace him. This news had
shattered Cassidy, who was now refusing even to eat.

Cassidy
you can't continue like this. You have to eat.” I told her as I
sat next to her on the bed.

Tyler
leave me alone.”

No
damned. Why are you doing this? You have to accept that David took
his decision and left.”

No,
this is not him. How could he leave like that? Leaving even Kylie. I
know how much he loves her.. why did he leave?”

I
don't know, but you have to stop thinking about him and live your
life with me. I'm your husband.”

I
know that, you keep reminding me each day.” She snapped. “Just
leave the food here, I'll try to eat only if you promise that you'll
leave me alone."

I nodded knowing how
stubborn she was. I had to do something to have my wife back. I knew
it wasn't going to be simple, but I had to try. I thought a little
and then went out. I went to a travel agency. Maybe a holiday
together would bring us close to each other again. She needed to be
far from here for some time. Perhaps spending time together will
ignite the flame again. I bought two tickets to the Seychelles. She
had always wished to go there but because of my work, I was never
able to take her. I returned home happy. Hoping this would bring a
smile on her face. She had woken up and was in the kitchen trying to
cook something.

Hello
sweetheart.” I said kissing her neck.

Hello
Tyler,” she said while she took a step back and turned to face
me.

I
have a surprise for you.” I said smiling.

She looked at me happily.

What?”

Here,
these are for you.” I said giving her the tickets. Her face
saddened probably she thought the surprise was something else.

Seychelles?”

Yes,
you always wanted to go there.. we can go now.” I said my voice
full of enthusiasm.

No..
Tyler.”

A shadow of sadness veiled
my face.

Oh,
come on Cas, we'll have fun together. It's like being on honeymoon
again. The Seychelles would be the perfect place where to conceive
our baby.” I said hoping she will accept.

I
said no. I don't feel like traveling right now.”

Cassidy,
life goes on. We have to think about us.. about...”

Stop
it Tyler please,” she said putting the tickets on the table and
grabbing her jacket and keys.

Where
are you going?” I asked her as I felt my heart beating fast.

For
a walk, I need to think.”

Think
about what?”

About
my life.”

I'll
come with you. Just give me a second to change.” I said.

No..
I need to be alone.”

I looked at her sadly, but I
didn't insist. I just felt so sad. I was trying it all, but it wasn't
working.

The
next day I had to return to work. I didn't like to leave her alone so
soon, lately she wasn't herself anymore. But I couldn't do otherwise.
I went to the hotel but I didn't manage to do much; I kept thinking
about her, alone at home. At midday, I decided to return to her. I
grabbed my briefcase and left. As soon as I arrived I saw Angela's
car parked in our drive in. I parked my car in the garage and entered
inside from the connecting door. I heard them talking; I was going to
announce my arrival when something Angela said stopped me from doing
so.

Cassidy
I received this today.”

What
is it?” Cassidy asked her voice full of hope.

It's
a letter from David. It's for you.”

CHAPTER
43

Cassidy's POV

I took the letter from mum's
hand. I could hear my heart beating in my ears as I opened it with
shaking hands. My stomach tied into a knot when I saw David's neat
calligraphy. I hadn't read anything yet, and I already felt tears
welling in my eyes. I read in silence the few lines. My stomach
tightened more with every line I read and at the end I felt my heart
bursting. I put the letter down and cried. My mum looked at me
worried.

What
does it say?”

I shook my head and put the
letter in her hands instead of responding. I couldn't talk right now.
I began to sob.

My mum started to read out
loud.

Dear
Cassidy, I'm sorry I had to leave you the way I did. But it was the
only way I could do it. When I saw you with Tyler, I understood that
I was going to lose you again. That once more you would have chosen
him, so I just left. I'm sorry, but I couldn't bear hearing those
words again, that you love me but that you love him more. You'll
always be in my heart. I will love you forever. I'll get in touch
later with your mum to see Kylie, but I don't want to see you again,
it hurts too much. I love you. David.”

Mum stopped reading and
looked up at me.

Cassidy..”

What?”

What
are you doing here?” She asked. She seemed angry.

What
do you mean?” I asked her stunned.

Honey
you love this man, why are you here?” She repeated.

What
are you saying? Mum I can't leave Tyler.. he's my husband.” I
said crying even more.

Cassidy,
it's no use to stay with him just because you're obliged to. You're
not in love with him. Honey I can't let you take the wrong decision
again.”

No
mum, please...it will pass. I'll be OK.” I insisted.

No,
you won't, like you never been OK in the last seven years. You have
always loved David, and you were never happy in your marriage. I know
that you don't want to hurt Tyler, but you'll do anyway if you don't
love him. You won't make him happy, how can you? When you feel
miserable all the time, when you cry each day of your life?”
