Marianne Fredriksson was born in Sweden in 1927. She began her writing career as a journalist, and has worked as an editor for several successful periodicals and was the founder of Vi Föräldrar (a Parent magazine).

Fredriksson did not start writing fiction until she was fifty years old but has since published ten novels. Her book

in the U.S., Ballantine, 1998) was the #1 best seller in both Germany and her native Sweden and has been published in twenty-seven countries.
