Tristan withdrew an oblong box from his jacket pocket. She knew what his jewelry box housed. She’d thought of that choker often, how pretty it might look clasped around her neck. He removed the top and said, “Love me. Love them, Ansley. Say you’ll be ours.”
Kimberly sighed dreamily in the background. “This is so romantic. They’re proposing in front of her entire family and friends!”
“You have to say yes,” Patience told her.
“With their looks,” Vicky said, laughter in her voice, “I imagine she won’t be able to say no.”
“Hey now,” Joshua said.
“Let her talk,” Patrick said. “I have a paddle with her initials carved in the handle, forever etched in one slab of magnificent wood.”
Everyone behind them chuckled as Elliott opened a square box with an eighteen-carat gold, cufflink-style bracelet. Bailey showcased a similar one to match. Both bracelets formed a set with the emerald-studded choker Tristan held up for all to see.
Then, Graham flipped the lid on the velvet box and a sparkling diamond winked back at her. “It’s beautiful,” Ansley said, her gaze working over each of her fellows. “Each gift is sensational, really.”
“And there’s a reply we’ve been waiting to hear,” Tristan reminded her.
Her shoulders twitched nervously and she clapped her hands together, practically wiggling all over as she excitedly responded, “Yes, Sir! Yes! Yes! Yes! To all of you!”
She danced around them as her family cheered. In the background, she heard Joshua say to Kane, “Two down, two to go.”
And she couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief when Daddy Kane said in return, “If Patience and Kimberly can find, and keep, fellas like those four, we’ll be lucky indeed.”
Epilogue
Six Months Later
Mitch Colony slammed the car door and stood in front of the magnificent black gates leading to an expansive spread. He thrust his hand inside the car window and paid the cab driver.
Seconds later, he stood there alone, wondering what he must’ve been thinking. He had other places to go, other destinations he could’ve chosen. Instead, he found himself at the end of the driveway where his friends and their woman lived.
He started that walk, heading toward the main house. Uncertainty followed him with every step, but he kept right on trekking.
If a man wanted to know what was on a woman’s mind, he had to ask. He couldn’t beat around the bush. He just jumped right into the fire and hoped like hell he didn’t get burned.
He had a lot he needed to say, a few years’ worth of burdens to unload off his chest, and a phone call to Trixie wouldn’t quite do the trick. He needed to look her in the eye and tell her what was on his mind, explain why he’d been forced to let her go.
Another hundred steps or so and he’d stand on their front porch, knocking and waiting. While he was nervous and anxious, he couldn’t shake an extraordinary feeling. He was either a long way from home or perhaps he’d just arrived there. Either way, he was at that special place, several feet away from the woman who’d always held his heart in the palm of her hand. And regardless of what words would exchange between them, she’d forever live within his soul.
Yes indeed, his heart had led him back to the woman he loved. Mitch had finally found his way home.
