He should have, of course. I was surprised he hadn't. “No problem,” I said automatically.

There was a beat—or more of a dropped beat—and I said reluctantly, “Jake, this is Mel Davis. Mel, Jake Riordan.”

Mel was on the other side of his car, and Jake hadn't got out, so nothing more was called for than a nodding of heads and minimal greetings—and that was exactly the extent of it.

“Nice to meet you,” Mel said.

“Davis,” Jake returned. Since I couldn't believe that Jake remembered the name of my ex, the terseness had to be merely his natural charm shining through. His gaze met mine, and by some quirk of the fading light, his eyes looked green. “I found Nick Argyle.”

“You did?”

His mouth quirked. “Don't sound so surprised.”

“No, only I figured even odds he'd be sitting at that big sergeant's desk in the sky by now.”

“Nope. I hope I sound that sharp at seventy-plus. I've got a meet with him tomorrow. I thought you might want to tag along.”

“Seriously?”

He nodded.

I didn't have to think about it. Today's taste had been all the solitary confinement I could swallow. I'd be going stir-crazy before long. “I'd like to, yeah.”

“Eleven o'clock in the morning. Will that work for you?”

“Works for me. Thanks for inviting me.”

“Don't mention it.” By now it had dawned on all three of us that Jake hadn't had to drive over to the bookstore to deliver this news.

Mel said, “We've got to go, Adrien, or we'll be late.”

Jake's expression was totally blank.

Too much drama in my life
, as Natalie would say. I was irritated to hear the note of apology in my voice. “Mel and I are going to catch a film-noir double feature at LACMA. You know the film series the County Museum of Arts puts on?”

“You'll enjoy that.” He inclined his head politely to Mel. “Have a great evening.” The window of his car slowly rolled up.

He nodded to me through the glass and put the car into reverse, making the neat, tight half circle in the alley with the ease of long practice.

Mel and I got into his car.

“So that was the cop?”

“That's Jake, yes.”

“He's…a presence, that's for sure.” Mel was smiling, curious. “Not what I would have pictured for you.”

“What did you picture for me? Clearly not yourself.”

“Yeeouch.” Mel was still keeping it light. “I can see why you're having doubts. He seems like a roughneck.”

“A roughneck?” To hide my illogical irritation—illogical, because who was I kidding? Of course I was having doubts—I returned lightly, “Well, you know what they say about opposites attracting.”

“I've never believed that.”

Neither did I, actually. I said, “I may have done something unfair. Jake's working as a PI now, and I hired him to look into the weird stuff that's been happening at the bookstore.” I filled him in on the second break-in. Before I'd finished, he was reaching for his antacids. I'd forgotten what a worrier Mel was.

“Anyway, I thought it would help both of us. Jake needs the work, and I need the security breaches to stop.”

“And he's misinterpreting your gesture?” When I didn't answer, Mel asked, only half joking, “Or you are?”

The evening went better than I expected. It helped that Mel and I had always seen eye to eye on film—and that these classics were two of my favorites.
The Big Sleep
with Humphrey Bogart was pretty much the film everyone thought of when they thought of Chandler, and
The
Blue Dahlia
was the only script Chandler wrote for the screen. Everything else was mostly adapted from his stories.

It was a pleasure to see the films again and under such primo conditions—and these
were
primo conditions. The county museum's Leo S. Bing Theater was equipped with an amazing sound system—three amazing sound systems, if you wanted to get technical—and it looked as good as it sounded, though that was really Mel's realm of expertise rather than mine. I was all about story. Mel was more into technique. Even if I wasn't an expert, I appreciated seeing the movies on the big screen again.

“It's going to be a shame if they lose this,” Mel said during the intermission.

I agreed.

The forty-year-old LACMA weekend film series was still relatively unknown, which was a shame, considering the role Hollywood and the film industry played in shaping Southern California. In recent months, dwindling audiences and lack of funds had put the program in jeopardy, but the city—and the film community—stepped up to the plate. For now, the weekend film series was saved.

I admit I was very close to dozing off at the last bit of
The Big Sleep
, and in fact, Mel did razz me about life imitating art.

“Would you like to stop somewhere for coffee or a drink?”

I shook my head. “As much as I'd like to, I'm bushed.”

“Another time?”

“Sure.”

“How about dinner tomorrow night?”


Tomorrow
night?”

Mel said. “I don't want to play games. I enjoyed tonight more than I've enjoyed any night in a long, long time. I want to see you again. I hope you feel the same way.”

“I enjoyed tonight, no question,” I said. “I just…”

Mel filled in the blank. “Don't want to see me again?”

I stared at him.

“No, definitely not that.”

He leaned forward, and we kissed. His mouth was warm and pliable and disconcertingly familiar. Uncomplicated. Nice. Safe.

Our lips parted. I said, “Definitely not that.”

Chapter Six

Early Friday morning, Natalie arrived at Cloak and Dagger to receive book shipments and complain about the music I was playing.

“What
is
that?” Her expression was as pained as though an air-raid siren were going off.

“That's Glenn Miller. 'The Nearness of You.'”

“I don't mean the song. I mean…what kind of music is that? Classical is bad enough. This is…old-people music.”

“You say that about the Beatles. You say that about the Pretenders.”

“Yes, okay, this is…ancient-civilization music.”

I made a dismissive sound. “I like it.”

“Warren says…”

I turned the volume down on her and glanced over the bills of lading—which I'd practically had to arm wrestle her for.

Shortly after ten thirty the front door on the other side of the building opened, and Natalie and I watched two plainclothes detectives—presumably one of them was the detective I'd spoken to on the phone first thing that morning—enter. We were acknowledged with a flash of badges.

The detectives went upstairs.

“What now?” Natalie asked.

I shook my head. I was waiting for Detective Alonzo to make an appearance; to my relief, there was no sign of him. It seemed to be only the two detectives. “Maybe it's the postinvestigation walk-through.”

“The what?”

“Exit procedures for the detectives in charge of a crime scene. At the conclusion of the case, the investigator does a walk-through to ensure the scene investigation is complete.”

“You mean the case is closed?”

“I don't know. I don't see how it could be this soon. Hopefully it means they'll let us open for business.”

Jake arrived shortly after, and I went to the side door to let him in.

“Argyle lives in Ojai, so make sure you've got whatever you need for the next few hours.”


Ojai?

His gaze was curious. “Is that a problem?”

“I don't know.” I said reluctantly, “That's—what? An hour and a half, two hours, each way?”

“Yeah?”

“I'm not sure I'm up to it.” It was painful to admit, painful to acknowledge how uncertain I was of myself. Even more than convalescence, I felt tethered by my fear of what might happen.

It was frightening and frustrating. Was I ever going to be up for anything again? It didn't feel like it.

I could feel Jake assessing me, though I didn't meet his eyes.

“I'll make sure you don't get into any trouble.”

“Thanks.” I had to work at a smile. “I should probably play it safe.”

“I think it'd do you good to get out of here for a while.”

I nodded. I agreed with him, but it wasn't that simple. What if something happened? Did he really want to try and deal with that? I didn't.

“Why don't you phone your doctor?”

I looked up, startled.

Jake clarified, “Why don't you ask him if you're well enough to spend about three or four hours in a car?”

Uh, Hello Kitty
, as Em would say. So simple it was disconcerting that it hadn't occurred to me.

I left Jake to Natalie's mercy while I went into my office and called Dr. Cardigan. I was reassured that, provided I wasn't doing the driving, I was permitted to travel, although there were a few restrictions.

I dutifully reported back to Jake. “I'm supposed to get out and stretch my legs for five to ten minutes every hour or so.”

“That's easy enough. Anything else?”

Dr. Cardigan had suggested that if the trip was more than two hours one way, I should spend the night at a motel or hotel. I wasn't about to suggest that to Jake.

“No. That ought to do it.”

I grabbed my meds and a tea towel to place between the seat belt and my chest to minimize irritation to the incision. “I'll be glad when this bullshit is over,” I commented as Jake pulled out onto East Colorado Boulevard.

“What's that?”

“I'm fed up with being scared all the time.”

He threw me a quick glance. It was weird the stuff I told Jake. Stuff that I wouldn't tell anyone else for love or money. Weird, because no one would ever think of Jake as someone patient with weakness—his own or anyone else's.

He didn't reply to that. “How was the movie?”

“Movie? Oh. Two movies.
The Big Sleep
—which I nearly did, because I have the stamina of a goddamned infant—and
The Blue Dahlia
. They're both quintessential Chandler. He was nominated for an Oscar for the screenplay on
The Blue Dahlia
, and
The Big Sleep
has Bogart and Bacall, so—”

“A good time was had by all?”

“You could say that.”

Instead, he said hesitantly, “I didn't realize Davis was back in the picture. Doesn't he teach at UC Berkeley?”

He had remembered. Well, one thing about Jake: he paid attention to details.

I said, “Yes. He's down visiting. His dad recently had heart surgery.”

The silence between us was filled by Marc Cohn's “Walking in Memphis.”

“He's not in the picture,” I said. “It's hard to explain. The way it ended between us—things were unresolved. That's all.”

He asked drily, “Isn't that pretty much the way it is when most relationships end? Is anything ever really completely resolved?”

“I think so, yeah.”

Jake nodded thoughtfully and, to my relief, did not ask the question I dreaded. He changed the subject. “I'm hitting a wall with Henry Harrison. Not unexpected, because we've got almost nothing to go on. I tried contacting hotels in the area. There's not a lot more I can do unless he resurfaces.”

“If he resurfaces.”

“If you're right and he's somehow connected with this case, he'll resurface.”

“This Argyle remembered Jay Stevens?”

“It took some prodding. It was a long time ago, and it never really was officially a murder case, but he did finally remember a few details, and he was willing to talk, so we'll see what comes of it.”

“How'd you find him so fast?”

“I've still got a contact or two downtown.” The satisfaction in his voice made me smile inwardly.

“Whatever is going on at the bookstore, it's got to tie into Jay Stevens's murder.”

“It is homicide,” he agreed. “The preliminary indicates Stevens was killed by blunt-force trauma to the head. There's a big crack down the side of his skull. He must have been struck by something pretty damn heavy. He probably died almost instantly.”

Nice to still have friends on the force. The papers had been remarkably silent on the topic of Jay Stevens once the excitement of the discovery of the skeleton in the floor had been milked.

Jake said, “It's been handed over to the CCHU. The cold case homicide unit. But you have to remember, despite the media attention on the discovery of Stevens's remains, this isn't a high-profile case.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means that it all went down half a century ago. Our resources are limited. CCHU has six detectives trying to choose among eight thousand unsolved homicides dating all the way back to 1960.”

I groused, “You'd think they could move the cutoff to permit one case from 1959. Couldn't they temporarily add an extra detective or two?” Granted, if the extra detective was going to be Alonzo, I'd be just as happy if they let it go.

“The focus has to remain on clearing up current caseloads that not only stand a better chance of being solved but have citizens pushing for resolution. No grieving family member is begging us to find Stevens's killer. No one is begging us to give them closure.”

Our. Us.

Once a cop, always a cop, I guessed.

“I'm begging,” I said.

He looked at me and grinned. “You never begged in your life.”

“I suppose you have?”

An odd expression flickered in his eyes, a sudden recognition of something in the distance—or the past. “I begged for something once.”

To be straight? That would be about right. Or did he mean it in sexual context I didn't want to know anything about?

I said drily, “And did you get what you begged for?”

“Yeah.” His voice sounded funny. “I did.”
