Max looked at JC before they both leaned down to look in the caged door of the carrier.

JC took a step back and cocked her head, blinking. “Oh, you crazy bunch o’ paranormals. Always with the surprises.”

She nudged Max when his mouth fell open.

He snapped his mouth closed, giving her a sheepish look.

“So, alpha, what do I do to make this go away?”

Max’s lips pursed. “Okay, so there’s a bright side to this, Derrick. At least there are no fangs or forked tongues involved, right?”

JC fought a snort, nudging Max in the ribs again for his insensitivity.

Derrick, clearly not in the mood for a good joke, held the pet carrier higher. “This isn’t funny!”

They both peered inside the dark interior of the carrier again. The “not funny” stirred, dark and shadowy, making JC and Max jump when the silence was broken by a single sound.

“
Meow…
”
