She set about putting herself back together. Her skirt was rucked up around her waist and her breasts were still outside of her dress. Her hair had come down partially and was tangled around her face, pieces of it stuck to her cheeks and neck. She tugged down her skirt and adjusted her bodice, and reached up to try to pin her hair back into some semblance of the style Anna had created. After a minute or two, she gave up and simply pulled the pins free, letting her hair tumble around her shoulders. Sean held his hand out and she dropped the pins into them, and he put them in his pocket.
They sat side by side for a few minutes, not speaking. Then Sean put his hand out and grasped Callie’s. He looked at her.
“What do we do now?” Callie asked. Her brow was creased with concern.
“I don’t know,” Sean admitted.
“This can’t be anything more,” Callie whispered. “Our parents would be so angry.”
Sean reached out and pulled her closer to him. “Let’s not worry about it. Let’s not worry about any of it. I don’t know what this is going to be. I don’t know if it is going to be more or less or just go back to the way things were before, but I want to find out. No matter what happens, it’s going to be okay.”
“Is it?” Callie’s mouth was trembling.
“If we never do this again, I’ll still be in your life, Callie. I’m not going anywhere. And if we do, and it’s only sometimes and it’s only for fun, then we can enjoy it and never say a word. And if it becomes…more, then we will figure that out when the time comes. There’s a whole world out there, Callie. They can accept it or we can find somewhere where it won’t matter.”
She leaned her head against his shoulder. “How did you know what I needed to hear?”
He pressed a kiss to the top of her head. “Because I know you, Callie. I’ve known you for years. We did what we wanted to do tonight, and it was fantastic. It was everything I’ve been dreaming of for longer than you know. It doesn’t matter what happens tomorrow. Tonight was perfect.”
Callie nodded. “It really was.”
Sean laughed suddenly. “Did you think something like this would happen when you wanted me to take you out somewhere like this?”
She shook her head. “No, not at all. I never thought you wanted me like I wanted you.”
“Well I did. For years. And when I saw you looking at me in the shower, I knew you wanted me. I imagined for a long time all the ways it might happen. I just didn’t know how to actually make it happen.”
“Well, I’ll be here in college for another year.”
“Then I’ll come visit. And we will see what happens.” Sean wrapped his arms around her, and then stood up. “Let’s go find your friend.”
Many of the couples had dispersed by the time they slipped out of the alcove. They walked downstairs and saw Anna sitting at the bar, chatting away with the bartender. Her companion had disappeared.
“Where’d your friend go?” Callie teased.
Anna shrugged. “Who knows? He was fun, but a bit boring to talk to. Now this guy…” she winked at the bartender, and he grinned. “He’s taking me out to lunch next week,” she whispered conspiratorially to Callie.
Callie laughed.
“Ready to get out of here?” Sean asked, his hand still resting on the small of Callie’s back. Anna cast a glance Callie’s way, but said nothing. “Sure.” The bartender handed her the bill and she quickly signed it, then stood up. “After you two.”
Sean drove them home, and Callie looked out the window at the lights passing by until she finally dozed off, dreaming of Sean’s hands on her and the small room where they had been only a short time before.

She was still half asleep when they walked in the door, but Sean and Anna were wide awake. She sat on the couch next to Sean while Anna poured them both a drink and they sat, chatting about the night. Anna was telling them about her encounter with the man on the dance floor, and the conversation turned for a few minutes to the man and woman who had put on the show for the crowd.
Callie leaned against Sean, wondering what would happen next. She pictured him sliding into her bed in the morning, running his hands over her body, sliding under the sheets to wake her up. She pictured him coming for the weekend, and leaving on a Sunday afternoon. She pictured him with a glamorous woman in New York, and she felt a flash of jealousy. She had a feeling she would want more. She didn’t know how much more. A month? A year? Two? Forever? She knew Sean was right, that there was no point in worrying about these things now, but it was difficult not to. She felt Sean’s arm tighten around her waist, and she let out a long breath.
He was right. She could be happy for now. For now, she had everything she could possibly want.
He leaned over to her and whispered in her ear. “I”ll be in your bed in the morning. You can count on it.”
A delicious shiver went down her spine, and she felt herself flushing at the thought of what might happen in the morning.
Yes. This was all she needed for now.
Anna got up and collected their glasses, and Callie helped Sean pull out the pillows and blanket they had stashed in the hall closet for him to make up his bed on the couch again. He settled onto the couch and when Anna wasn’t looking, Callie gave him a quick kiss. “Tomorrow,” she whispered.
“Tomorrow,” he promised.
Anna passed Callie in the hall as they were walking to bed and grabbed her arm. “I know something happened! What was it?
How
was it?”
Callie grinned. “I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.”
