Bear in a Billion: EXPOSED (#1) (13 page)

“That was my bear, baby. This is me.”

And Ethan thrust powerfully into her while sucking back on the sensitive flesh of her lower neck. Haley let go. The fireball within her exploded, jolts of pleasure radiating outward. She felt hot and cold at the same time as the pleasure took over, numbing her body. She knew this was her release, and she could feel that it was his too as his seed rushed up her channel, racing home.

Would they have a cub? Cubs? Yes, she thought. She wanted that.

Their essences mingled in what felt like a perfect dream, her pussy sucking back on his still pulsing cock. Haley struggled to get her breath, light and dark flashing before her eyes as the pleasure continued to radiate out. Was this it? Was this what it meant to be home? To be loved completely? To be one with your mate? Whatever it was, Haley hadn’t experienced it before. The contentment, the sheer pleasure of not looking forward or backward, the joy of the moment. Ethan must have pulled out of her, because he picked her up and brought her to her room. He closed the door behind them and laid her on her bed.

“Stay with me,” she said.

Ethan laid beside her, spooning her, his body fitting perfectly with hers.

“Am I marked now?” Haley asked.

“Now and forever,” Ethan said.

“So I’m yours?”

“And I’m yours.”

But Haley had to ask a question. A question that had been bothering her for days. “How did you see me out there in the ocean?” she asked. “How did you know I was in trouble when nobody else could even see?”

“I didn’t,” Ethan said. “But my bear, he felt you. He knew that you needed help.”

Haley considered Ethan’s words. “He knew that somebody needed help, or he knew that I needed help?”

“You, baby. My bear sensed his mate. My bear sensed you.”

And Haley took his hand in hers, holding him close. That’s what she thought. Because she had sensed it, too. When she was drowning, sometime between the waves pulling her under and Ethan reviving her, the last thing she remembered seeing was a grizzly bear. Her bear. Ethan. Finally, somehow, in the vast ocean of life, she had found him. And she would never be alone again.

Epilogue

Ethan popped a champagne cork. Haley loved the way he had with people. He was such a gracious host. They were at Ethan’s home, her home now, in the expansive living room looking onto the beach. Katie was there, as was Laila, and two of Ethan’s friends, Tristan and Connor. Tristan was some sort of artist, and from what little she had heard, Connor worked in Hollywood. Ethan poured everybody a glass of champagne.

“This is for all of us,” Ethan said. “For what we’ve done here, and for you, Haley.”

He came over and planted a giant kiss on her lips. Haley blushed. Did he always have to be so damned sweet? The little get together was a celebration of the fact that the natural gas facility’s development permit had been denied. The protest had been a success. There would be no industrial facility constructed, which meant that Ethan could concentrate on other things—like running his company, getting new wildlife corridors approved, and of course, his plan to gradually integrate their two species.

“You have a beautiful place, Ethan,” Laila said, looking around the stark modern living room. “Could use a woman’s touch, though.”

“Give me a break,” Haley said. “Moving, a new relationship, a new job. I’ll get to the decorating later.”

After Ethan’s identity had been revealed, Ethan had convened with his shifter friends and the go-ahead was given for Haley to release her interview. The release of Ethan’s identity pushed the shifters’ timetable but not their agenda. Their plans with government to integrate their kinds were well advanced. The coming months would tell them more, but other shifters had now come forward, and it looked as though, soon, shifters would be able to be open about who they were.

After the interview had aired, Haley had her choice of pretty much any news organization around. Wiley, down at the Surf Shack, had been happy for her, and pretty soon, she’d accepted a position at the
San Francisco Daily
. Now she filed a story every day. Coupled with the thrill of a new relationship, it was her dream, but it hardly left time to pore over fabric swatches and paint samples.

“Perhaps I can help with the decorating?” Tristan said.

“Really? Are you a decorator?” Laila asked.

“In a way.”

“In a good way?” Katie said.

“I dabble in painting.”

“Tristan is an artist,” Ethan said.

“He paints cars,” Connor said.

“I paint dolphins on cars,” Tristan replied, appraising Laila. “And I want to paint you.”

“So you’ll get a portrait of Laila for your living room?” Katie laughed.

“What’s wrong with that?” Laila said.

“Not a thing,” Tristan said.

“Guys,” Ethan said. “I’m going to hang IKEA posters on my walls if you don’t all chill out. I invited you here to say thanks.”

“Is it Turkey Day already?” Katie asked.

Connor laughed, a hearty belly laugh. “Where did you find this one, Haley?”

“Oh, she’s been hanging off my heels since the eighth grade.”

Ethan draped his arm around Haley’s waist. “I want to say thank you, for you, darling, for our friends, for everybody being here with us as we embark on our journey together.”

“You going somewhere?” Katie asked.

“You guys are impossible,” Ethan laughed. “Let me just say this.” He raised his glass. “To good friends, to good times, and especially, to a good mate.”

And Ethan kissed Haley deeply. Everybody smiled, and in that moment, Haley understood what fulfillment meant. She had traveled nearly three thousand miles from Ohio, but she had finally found her home. Haley returned Ethan’s kiss, her heart pressed against his. She had found love and a career, but most importantly, she had learned to trust. To trust in life, to trust in herself and to trust her mate. To trust that, finally, after years of searching, she was exactly where she was meant to be. With her bear. Together at last.
