“Shit! Your girlfriend, that’s Amy, right?” She didn’t even wait for Seb’s nod of agreement before she punched the elevator button. Waving her hands, Hannah said, “Please, just forget I said that. Any of it. Forget I met you. And whatever you do, don’t tell Amy. Oh, God. I didn’t know, I swear.”
Hannah glanced over her shoulder toward Amy’s apartment. “Clearly Amy has a visitor tonight. So I’ll, um, leave you two alone. If she asks, just say I had to cancel or something.”
“And…who are you?”
“Hannah.” The blonde’s voice got smaller and smaller with every word. “A friend of Amy’s.” When the elevator doors opened, she backed into them. “Just, um, have a good night.”
As the doors safely shut Hannah away, Amy found herself able to move again. She stumbled away from the door, waiting for Seb to return.
When he did, the first thing that came out of her mouth was, “Why did you turn her down?
No one
turns Hannah down.”
His grip on the pizza box made the cardboard groan in protest. “I want you, Amy.”
“But Hannah is beautiful.”
“
You’re
beautiful.”
She glanced down at herself, at her amply padded body. “Not like Hannah. Or…Monique.”
“Monique?” He shook his head. “Is that what you’re fixin’ to fret on? Ain’t nothing between us.”
“She said you went out.”
“For a week, near half a dozen years ago. She ain’t exactly my type.”
What type? Slim and beautiful? That was every man’s
type
. Amy glanced away. “Look, Seb, I know I have a problem with my weight–”
“What problem? I love your curves. I love you exactly as you are. Why can’t you understand that,
cher?
I want you, I love you, I desire you. No one but you.”
Amy couldn’t breathe. “You… you love me?”
“Ain’t how I dreamed of telling you but yes, I love you. Will you give us a chance, or what?” He thrust out the pizza box. “I ordered this special.”
Biting her lip, Amy slid the box open. Her heart threatened to pound its way from her chest. Inside the box was a cheese pizza. The words,
Move in with me?
were spelled out in pepperoni.
Amy trembled. He really loved her.
Her
, of all people. Maybe for once, she shouldn’t question it. Maybe just once in her life, she deserved this. She deserved him. Glancing up, she noticed his hunched shoulders and the way he chewed his lip. With fear. How could this man be afraid?
Blinking away tears, Amy said, “Yes.”
“Yes,
cher?
”
“Yes, I’ll move to New Orleans with you. I want to be with you, too. I love you, Seb.”
A broad smile broke across his face and he started to babble. “I know you’ll have to quit your job and you’ll miss your cousin, but–”
Striding forward, she laid a hand over his lips. “Hush, it’ll work out fine. Actually, when I was down, Monique offered me a job. Sort of.”
Warily, Seb asked, “Doing what?”
“Designing plus-sized lingerie. It’s been a hobby of mine for years, really.”
His tongue snaked out to tease the lip where she’d so recently rested her fingers. “If you need to test the effects, I’ll volunteer.”
Pulling him closer, Amy leaned up for a long kiss. Suddenly, she started to laugh.
“Am I that terrible at kissing, or what?” Seb asked, pouting.
Amy patted his chest to placate him. “You’re a fantastic kisser and you know it.”
“Then why were you laughing?”
“It’s nothing. Long story.” Thinking back only a couple days ago, Amy recalled Danielle’s words.
I guess there will be a celebration in my future, after all.
