I came to London to learn, to explore in my talent as an actor.

Never did I imagine in my wildest imaginations or dreams the instruction I would learn, the education that would teach me how to stay in control on the outside, while I quivered, melted, and squirmed, on the inside, ever longing to explode, all the while playing the part of eager faithful student in the hands of my master teacher.

Chapter One

My mother would not stop calling me. She had been phoning me ever since I’d stepped off the plane at Heathrow. “Call me and let me know how your flight was. Let me know how your cab ride went. How is your apartment?”

I was twenty-one years old, but you would think by the way my mom constantly worried I was twelve! Even though I was with my best friend, Sky, she still fretted relentlessly. My mother was very protective, to say the least. She wanted to make sure I was not talking to strangers, that I kept my money in different pockets in case I was mugged. Her questions and concerns were always raining from the sky like rain falls in the Amazon.

I just wanted to prove I could be on my own and explore on my own. I had to; it was time, especially if I were to move to New York City when I graduated to pursue acting as a career. The summer acting extensive was a perfect avenue to strengthen my acting skills and gain the necessary growth to polish my talent and bring me one step closer of one day stepping on Broadway. Sky and I shared the same dream—to be a professional working actor. Except she wanted to venture to film and television. I hadn’t decided if I wanted that or not. Both drama majors, she and I became instant best friends, and luckily, we were able to both attend the same extensive. I scraped and saved all year to afford the summer tuition.

I was from a small town in South Carolina called Kimp. Kimp was a land of tractors, shabby farmhouses, and lost cats. Sky was from Charleston, South Carolina and from a well to do family where she never had to worry about finances a day in her life.

London…London was everything Kimp was not. And I couldn’t keep my eyes from widening in awe of the incredible new sights, architecture, and newness around me.

“I know. It’s amazing isn’t it?” Sky admired as the light rain kissed the windows.

I had stars in my eyes and butterflies in my stomach. I couldn’t believe we were here! We were here and our classes would begin in two days! Which meant I had one day to actively look for a part time job to help pay for my living expenses. That was the only drawback to my perfect summer dream. Yet, I’d never been one to shy away from hard work. I would do what I would have to do. That’s what it takes to stay on top!

We took a cab to a cluster of shops and cafes. Our new temporary home was nearby—an apartment Sky’s wealthy parents paid for us. I was starving and craved a snack. Sky wanted to go shopping so we agreed to a happy medium. Coffee, then shopping. Er, window shopping for me. I need all my extra money for dining and small emergencies.

It was very busy at Angel Birmingham’s, one of London’s most popular coffee shops. I was just expecting your run-of-the-mill grab it and go café, but Angel Birmingham’s was very inviting, with cute tables and chairs outside if you were a people-watcher and wanted to just relax and take in the hustle and bustle.

We ventured into the adorable café.

“Hi there.” A chipper man with nice, thick brown hair, greeted me.

“Hey.” I smiled so the dimple in my cheek showed and my curly blonde hair fell into my face. “Latte please – oh, and could I have an application please?” I quickly threw that last bit in there as I tucked a tendril of hair behind my ear.

“We don’t’ have applications,” he said, his smile dropping from his face now that the greeting process was complete. “Drop off a resume.”

“Oh…I don’t have one of those things,” I let him know. He stared at me blankly before telling me the price of the drink.

“I’ll have a black coffee and we’re together.” Sky informed in her no nonsense manner. She was always so good at that. That’s what made her a great actor.

I gave her that look of please let me pay.

Nevertheless, she got her way and paid while I smiled a thank you and tried to continue on my quest of somehow applying for something. I really liked this place! It seemed like it would be the perfect job!

“My name’s Chelsea and I would like a job,” I kept on. “So maybe I could speak to the manager?”

“I am the manager and owner,” he informed, his tone flat. He looked annoyed. “Okay, Chelsea, where are you from? You sound like you’re from…far away.”

“South Carolina,” I proudly replied.

“Oh boy…” he muttered. “Where is that?”

“Far…away,” I just said, in my shy voice, my southern accent was very rich and I was embarrassed about it around everyone here. “You want specifics?” I asked. I pointed to the wall behind me. “Back there.” I smiled.

Sky reached for her coffee and gave me the look that she’ll see me when I’m finished with my interrogation. She headed over to the fixing table and kept a curious eye one me.

“Okay,” he wryly replied. “Well my name’s Harry.”

“You don’t look hairy,” I played. He gave me a look that was as far from amusement as I was from home.

“This place is very busy,” he let me know. “I mean, you will be on your feet for hours straight. There is no time to take a rest. It’s foot traffic from the minute we open until after we close – what I mean by that, love, is that we’ll have people knocking on the door wanting in. They don’t care if our back hurts and we need an early nightcap. They don’t care if we’re bleeding, on fire, what have you, okay?”

“See…” he started to explain, placing his dirty fingernails on the counter. His fingernails, though dirty I’m guessing from coffee, were very neatly trimmed, and his hair was perfect. It was thick at the top and shaved on the sides. I was getting the picture that he was a very “in control person”.  “Customers are the most important thing when it comes to Angel – without them, we don’t exist, so if some dingleberry is banging on the door five minutes after five, you open that door and smile fresh-faced like its nine am, you got me?”

“Yes…sir.”

“Anyone can gain experience when it comes to what we do here – that is not the point. The point is being nice, being eager to serve, yeah? I can’t teach you that, yeah?”

“I understand, sir.”

“I like the sir,” he said, before glancing over at the door for a minute. He seemed suddenly detached, and I wondered if this interview was over.

“Okay.” He eventually brought his eyes back to me. “Let’s do some role play, yeah?”

“Uh…okay. Role play?” I dragged the word out a bit in my southern drawl. I couldn’t help but blush. Although an actor and familiar with the term, I couldn’t shake the heavy sexual connotation with the word. Then, I blushed. Sky’s pretty racy and far more experienced than I with her older boyfriend. She told me all kinds of stories. Stories that made my conservative ways blush.

“I’m a customer,” he said, cheerful and innocent.

              “A customer of what?”

He looked very impatient all of the sudden. “At…this…café.”

              “Oh.” I smiled.

“You are the employee – at this café – where I am the customer,” he made sure I was keeping up. “What is the first thing you say to me?” Harry was good looking, but when he smiled he sort of looked like the evil Grinch from that Christmas story.

              “Okay…”

He was looking at me impatiently already. “Okay…? That’s not what you say.”

“Hi,” I corrected myself. “How are you?” I smiled. He saw the dimple in my left cheek, and my features softened. I played with my curly blonde hair. Hopefully he would just be taken by my charm since this interview wasn’t going that well. “I hope you’re having a good day.” I sounded a little flirty. He looked a little less professional.

“Um, yes.” He cleared his throat, trying to get back to the role play. “I am. Tell me what your special latte of the day is,” he said, rather demanding.

“I don’t know,” I said, out-of-character. “You haven’t told me that stuff,” I whispered, apologetic.

“You make it up as you go.” He sounded harsh. “Have you not ever played role play before?”

              I shook my head.

              “Never ever?” he asked.

              “No, sir.”

“Okay, just play along, make up a name for a latte.”

“Is that what…I mean what if we don’t really have it?” I was nervous and doing a miserable job with us. Harry rolled his eyes and walked off for a minute. Was the interview over? I wasn’t sure and I was getting pushed aside by incoming traffic and people grabbing things and trying to get passed me.

“Okay.” Harry came around the corner, cutting through the crowd and pointing to a table by the window. He swiftly walked over to it and I sat down across from him.

“I don’t know why…” he began, “Maybe I’m just in a good mood – maybe my heart is full of holiday summer cheer.” He was obviously being sarcastic. “But I’m going to give you a chance. What shift are you seeking? You have a great smile and manners. I like the sir.”

I tried to hold back on the crazy smile that wanted to take over my face.

“Well, the earliest shortest shift possible. I…have my classes starting at 9am.”

“You must be the luckiest person.”

“Why?”

“I need you to be here tomorrow at four thirty in the morning to open. For the first shift. Four hours.”

              “Four…four thirty AM??”
“We’re a coffee shop. Well, we’re more than a coffee shop – do you know anything about Angel Birmingham’s?”

I knew I should say yes. It was always a good idea to research a place you were trying to get a job at.

              “Yes.”

“Like what? Besides where the front door is.”

“Well,” I tried my southern charm out again. “I know the manager’s cute.”
Oh god, did I just say that?
He made a funny face. “Not that…I mean, I’m not like flirting with you or anything.” My face was probably hotter than their coffee right now.

              “Ms…what is your last name?”

I couldn’t remember it. I was such a nervous mess.

“Pierce. Chelsea Pierce.” I tried to regain my composure.

“Ms. Pierce, flirting with the guy who will probably be your boss very soon is not a very good idea. It's not professional.”

“But I’m not…I’m not flirting with you. You’re not really that cute.”

Chapter Two

“I can’t believe you just got a job just like that. It’s because you have perky tits,” Sky confessed as we perused window shops and walked down sidewalks filled with foreigners.

I looked down at my small cleavage displayed in my floral spaghetti strap dress.

“Okay, they’re perky. But not huge like yours. You’re the lucky one.” Sky was a curvy bombshell who was a mini version of Eva Longoria with bigger breasts.

“True, but you still have good tits. Don’t sell yourself short.” She winked at me. I tried to get a handle on what just occurred. I was full of mixed emotions about so much – being in a strange new place in the world and having just taken a job to work for a guy whom I’d already made things totally awkward with.

After grabbing a sandwich from a café, shopping, me retail lusting—oh the dresses!
Sigh, one day
— and buying a few grocery essentials, Sky and I hailed a cab to go home and get settled in. We were both exhausted.

The driver asked us in his snappy accent where we lived. I still didn’t even have our address memorized! I had to pull the little piece of paper it was written on from my pocket but Sky quickly informed him.

              “12 West Street.”

“That’s the other way.” He sounded upset.

We both just looked at each other, not knowing what to do. I stayed very still, hoping he wouldn’t make us get out of the cab. He reluctantly turned around and headed in the other direction.

“Are you new to London?” he asked after a few minutes had passed.

“Yes, very.” Should I say that to a stranger? He was just a harmless cab driver though.

“The first thing you should get to know is the streets and where you’re going.” I felt like I was getting a lecture. I also caught him trying to get a glimpse of my legs. I pulled my skirt down. My family made such a fuss over me.
Oh, Chelsea is such a pretty girl – if she were my daughter I would never let her venture off to London at such a young age!
I had soft blonde hair that came down to my shoulders, two big green eyes of awe, and apparently “the longest legs from South Carolina.” I was also a virgin, and I felt like guys could immediately tell. I felt like a deer running from a thousand guns.

I was relieved when he started to slow down in front of our apartment building. I reached for my pocketbook, to at least pay for something, but Sky wouldn’t have it. She handed him the money and ushered me out of the cab.

“Sky! You can’t keep paying for everything!”

“I’m not! My parents are. You’re with me. The deal was you have to help pay for food and entertainment. Trust me, this was the only way for me to have come— for you to come, too. So don’t worry your pretty little southern belle head.” She put her arm around me as we entered the beautiful lobby.

We didn’t even have cabs in Kimp, South Carolina. It was a very small town. You could walk it in much less than a day. Everyone drove old jalopies there. Here, people had such nice cars and clothes and things.

I smiled at the cute bellhop as we walked over to the elevator. The Conway was so pretty, very feminine, and elegant. The walls were pink and the floors were white marble. They shined as if they’d just been cleaned.

I looked up at the bellhop, who had shaggy brown hair and a little pug nose, as the elevator closed.
Stop flirting!
I smiled at myself.

We stepped off the elevator and walked down the candy-colored hallway to our room. My room was pretty small, but the size hadn’t gotten to me just yet. It was pretty – with a huge bed and a window that looked out at downtown London. Sky and I shared a kitchen, living space, and bathroom. I couldn’t believe I was here! I jumped up and down in my own little celebration as I took the sight of downtown one more time.

“I’m exhausted.” Sky fell on the living room couch. “I think I’m going to call Brad and then hit the hay.” Brad was her boyfriend of three years.

I took off my shoes and rested for a minute before walking around the tiny apartment once more. I went into the bathroom, which was tiny but very clean with a nice-sized tub. I would take a bath and try and cool down. It was very hot here today – the early rainfall had left the city humid.

I stood in front of the full-length mirror and took my clothes off. I hoped my tan would not fade here.
Was it always this cloudy?
I reached behind and unhooked my pink and white laced bra. My tits were not that big, but they were perky and soft, and I loved them. My bottom was round and soft and always felt a bit too plump for the snug jeans I liked to wear. My legs were long though, so they helped to make my bottom not look too perky.

I introduced my body to the cool water and listened as it started raining again. It was a hard panic of a rainfall – the kind that wanted to beat everything and leave it soaked. “I should have made a cup of tea!” I said out loud in my best London accent, making myself giggle as I submerged myself.

I got out of the bath and wrapped myself in the nice pink towel. There sure was a lot of pink going on in The Conway. I made my way over to the huge bed and pressed my soft, tired body against the white comforter. What a long commute. I could sleep for the rest of day and straight through the night if I wasn’t careful. Four thirty AM. I had to be there at four thirty AM, which meant I had to be up at least by three forty-five. Okay, three-thirty. Three-thirty! If my mom knew that, she’d surely make me get on the next flight back to the States.

I decided not to dwell over it too much. Maybe I should sleep for the rest of the day. I tried, as my body was exhausted, but my mind wanted to focus on that cute bellhop with the messy hair. He looked so sad, like a puppy dog, until someone walked through the door and he knew it was his job to perk up and smile at them.

I wished he was my boss, I thought dirtily, as a mischievous chuckle drifted from my soft lips.
What if he were in this room right now? Would you even know what to do with a boy?!

My mom talked all day and night about what trouble boys were. They were messy and they didn’t care. She made them sound like vultures that swept down and snatched up girls like they were just meat! There had to be more to it than that.

I woke up draped over the side of the bed. I heard a strange buzzing sound coming from somewhere in the room.
An insect? What time was it?
It was dark. I assumed the sun had just went down and night was young, but as I became more awake against my will, I realized that sound was not an insect but my cell phone alarm going off. It was 3:30 in the morning.

My body would not move. It was just too early – or late depending on how you looked at the situation. I rolled over. My mind was still charged with visions of the bellhop.
Get over it, nothing like that is about to happen.

I pulled myself up from bed and slowly made my way into the bathroom. The light was so harsh at this time of night.
Morning.
No one should have to get up this early for work! It was just inhumane. I looked over and noticed that I hadn’t let the water drain from the tub. My mom was always on my case back home about what a slob I was. I sort of admired the freedom I had now to be a slob and not have to hear about it. Hopefully Sky wouldn’t mind too much.

I washed my poor, puffy, sleepy face with cool water and turned the second light on in the main room. The main room was a tiny sofa, a TV, and a coffee table.

I couldn’t remember what Harry said to wear to work. I had a problem with listening to people, especially when I really needed to be.
Did it matter what I wore?
I was going to be stuck behind a counter for four hours,
in the wee hours of the morning
, I thought grimly, so who cared? I certainly wasn’t going to strut down the catwalk. Then again, it was hot, and I liked to wear dresses. I picked the one I liked the least (but that I still adored) this way if I messed it up, I wouldn’t be that perturbed.

It honestly looked better without a bra. I was quite surprised with how good I looked considering it was 4:01 am. My blonde hair had an extra wave in it today and was thicker than usual – surely caused by the muggy weather.

I went out into the hallway. It was so quiet because everyone else was sleeping. The bellhop was sleeping.
Was he dreaming?
Oh, he had such a darling face. I was outside and hailing a cab in no time.

“Angel Birmingham’s please,” I said. This cab driver was a lot less menacing-seeming than the last one.

“It so early,” he said in a chipper voice. “You must work there! Or you’re an extreme coffee addict.”

              “Both, but I work there.”

“Ah, can you grab me a cup of joe?” he joked.

“I wish I could. We don’t open until five though.”

“You are a delight. Where are you from?”

“South Carolina. I’m visiting for the summer.”

“May I make some recommendations? For places to go?”

“Please!” I excitedly spoke. He named a list of places that I hoped I’d be able to remember.

No one else was at Angel Birmingham’s when I first arrived. I didn’t exactly feel safe standing on the sidewalk with no one else around. I had horrible fantasies of someone kidnapping me and taking me around somewhere and doing horrible things to my pure little self. But what if it was the bellhop? He didn’t seem nearly that sinister.

“Ello!” Harry snuck up on me and scared the light out of me.

“Sorry,” he said, but he seemed amused. “If all goes well, I will give you a key soon.”

I smiled, just relieved to be let in to the café. It was very hot – just gross and stuffy – inside the coffee shop. Harry moved in swift fashion, flicking a light switch that turned on a set of lights in the back all at once, and then slowly the ones in the front followed.

“Chelsea Pierce,” he called my name like he was calling a lost cat. “This is not a department store. Let’s not make like a mannequin.”

Yes, it took me a minute to get his jokes. I was standing completely still, because he wasn’t giving me any direction. I didn’t even know where I should put my bag down.

“What would you like me to do?” I asked.

              He swung around, obviously agitated.

“Oh, I don’t know, Ms. Pierce – pick flowers? Comb your hair? Or maybe start making coffee? Which of these do you think would be relative to where you are right now?”

Oh my god, what a creep! I tried to keep my temper at bay. I slowly walked around behind the counter and wedged my bag into a little slot between the ice machine and some nasty bucket full of brown water.

“What’s that?” I pointed to it. Harry just gave me a look before fixing his hair. Yesterday it looked cemented in perfect position, but today it seemed to lack the proper amount of hair product. I could tell it was stressing him out, too.

“The machine leaks – look, I’ll give you a tour later – but meanwhile, in about twenty minutes, a line of needy people is going to come through that door and we have nothing ready! Start the coffee!”

“But how…where?” I whined a bit, and he practically shoved me out of the way.

“Oh my god, honestly. All my employees do is add more shadows to the walls,” he muttered, pouring a large amount of sweet smelling beans into a machine. Then he held up wrinkled papery things in front of me.

“You know what these are?” he asked, waving them around in front of my face.

              “Uh…”

“Filters!” Then he dropped over the counter like he’d been shot. “Oh dear god…she doesn’t know what filters are…” he mumbled into his hands that covered his face.

He slowly straightened up and found it within himself to breathe properly again. “Okay…do I just need to start with how grass grows? Or can we skip to the matter at hand?”

“You don’t have to be so mean!” I was about to cry. “Its my first day – I’m nervous.”

“Okay. You’re not about to host The Oscars. It’s okay. Just breathe. These are coffee beans,” he started over again. Then he tapped his knuckles against the thing he poured the beans into. “This is a grinder,” he spoke to me like I was three. “Think of it as a monster if you want, a monster that likes to eat beans…” then he made a stupid chewing/gnawing sound with his mouth. “You put beans in the monster, the monster chews the beans and spits out espresso grounds, now what do you do with the espresso grounds?”

              “Throw…them…away?”

“AHHHHH!” He started jumping up and down.

“Give them back to the monster…?” I guessed again.
