“Silent and deadly, with a nurturing skill to boot.” She turned her face up to his. “I wouldn’t risk this or any of these people, ever. It may be the only place our son will be safe.”

He kissed her hand. “We don’t need to stay here forever.”

“There’s no compelling reason for us to go back and so many reasons to stay.”

He leaned his head against hers.

“What about the lawsuit?”

“I called my attorney after Marcus was born and had him draw up the papers to shift balances from Alex’s accounts to a trust fund for his baby.” Mia brought her gaze to his and, with a finger, tried to smooth the frown that must have been there. “I have everything I want. There isn’t room left to hold a grudge against an innocent child.”

He brought her fingers to his lips for a kiss. He had no words for the journey she’d traveled or the choices forced upon her. His Mia withstood trials with a grace and power as if born to it. She hadn’t been born a Guardian, but she’d evolved into the very essence of their being.

“I’m sorry you weren’t able to save Xavier,” she said. “At least you were able to prove his claim.”

Turen took a deep breath. “I don’t think it will do anything for him. It wouldn’t if I had lost you and Marcus. I would want to burn the world to ash if someone took you from me. I’m surprised he hasn’t.”

She cupped her hand against his cheek. “You would want to, but you would do the right thing. Maybe there is a fine line holding him back, too.”

“Don’t count on it. If he experienced even a fraction of what I felt when Salvatore had you, then he’s beyond salvation.”

“So he’ll live forever with all the sadness and rage?”

“I want to believe it won’t be the case.”

Mia was quiet for a moment, and as Marcus started to move, she reached out a toe to rock his carrier until he settled back to sleep.

“Why would Xavier hide that Maitea was human?”

Turen said nothing. His mind sifted through the possibilities, none of them good. All of them pointed to Xavier’s suspicion of problems within the Sanctum. Briet was still working on the blood samples Mia had stored from Xavier’s compound, but for now, she had only more questions and no answers. There were also many unanswered questions from his stay in Xavier’s dungeons. They might never know what had happened to Xavier, but he had a strong suspicion it would all come to light one day.

She kissed him. “Perhaps we could focus on more pleasant prospects.”

He smiled as her hand drifted down his chest. “I am always willing to serve you, love.”

She laughed and tucked her head against his chest, his heart beneath her cheek. “Do you think it’s possible there are other Sanctums? Other places your people have hidden for safety?”

“This was the place of our creation, yet it’s not inconceivable some found other refuge when the virus hit. Briet kept hidden in plain view for years, and no one was the wiser.”

Mia raised a brow, and he shrugged. “Well, the majority of people were none the wiser. I hope others survived. I pray they find what I have found with you, their souls whole and their lives filled with love and purpose.” He pressed his lips to hers. “I do love you, my beautiful warrior. I want only your happiness, because I could no more give you up than I could turn back time. I would be lost.”

Mia smiled against his lips. “I would always find you.”
