Authors: Johanna Lane

I would like to acknowledge the support of the Robert T. Jones Fellowship at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland and the PEO International Peace Scholarship in the United States for financial assistance with my graduate studies at Columbia.

Sincere thanks to my editor at Little, Brown, New York, Laura Tisdel, for her generous attention to this book; to Reagan Arthur; to Fiona Brown, Jin Yu, and the publicity team; to Betsy Uhrig and Janet Byrne in production; and to jacket designer Kapo Ng. At Headline in London, to my editor, Imogen Taylor, and to Frankie Gray, Frances Gough, and all at Tinder Press.

To my agent, Eleanor Jackson, at Dunow, Carlson & Lerner in New York, I’m beyond grateful.

Love and thanks to the following teachers, colleagues, and friends: Sarah Adams, Silke Aisenbrey, Elisa Albert, Barbara Blatner, Ruth Bowie, Michael Callaghan, Vanessa Carswell, Amit Chaudhuri, Lucy Faulconbridge, John and Sue Hemingway, Joanne Jacobson, Elizabeth Kadetsky, Binnie Kirshenbaum, Kerri Majors, Rachel Mesch, Caroline Murnane, Els Quaegebeur, Liesl Schwabe, Fred Sugarman, and Josh Weil. And, from a long time ago, Dorothea Finan, Niall MacMonagle, and Alan Gray.

But most of all, above all, to my husband, Mike.
