When Carla saw Jean walking out of the coffee shop hanging on the arm of her yoga instructor, it was so damn cliché that she wouldn’t let herself believe that there was something going on.  But when she saw them stop in the parking lot by Jean’s car and pull together in a hot embrace while they kissed and stroked each other’s bodies, there was no way she could write it off.  So, she went ahead into the coffee shop to wait for her friend while she thought of what to do about it.

It was inconceivable to Carla that Jean would even want to cheat on Stephen.  Stephen was so nice and thoughtful and smart and funny and, well, he was damn hot.  She had been incredibly jealous when Jean and Stephen had hooked up because in her mind she had pictured being with him herself. All of them had been in a lit class together and had become fast friends.  There had been two other guys in their circle and Carla had dated both for a time, but it had always been Stephen that she wanted.  Of course, by the time she had felt confident enough to make a
move,
Stephen had already asked Jean out.  It had been a harsh blow, but, in the end, she had been happy for her friends.

And now, this.
Carla shook her head and didn’t hear when her name was called for her order.  Eventually, the barista, looking annoyed, had brought her order to her.  Apologizing, she fell back into her reverie, thinking about the past three years and how she had secretly pined for Stephen and yet she had kept her feelings tamped down because she didn’t want to be that kind of friend.

Stupid Jean!  What the hell was she thinking?  Carla just couldn’t understand, so she made herself stop thinking about it and watched the door for her friend’s arrival.  Of course, she would probably act like she had just arrived, counting on the idea that their planned meeting was at two o’clock.   It had just been Carla’s misfortune to arrive early and see the spectacle she had seen.

As she sat watching for her friend, though, she began to consider if it really was misfortune or something else.  As her thoughts whirled and then gelled on a plan, her friend finally walked through the door and gave her a big fat wave.  Smiling wickedly, Carla waved back.

Jean made her way to the little corner table after placing her order.  “Oh my God, the traffic was awful on the 10.  I hope you didn’t come that way, but I’m sure you couldn’t have because you were here on time.”

Carla gave her friend a hug and rolled her eyes at her exaggerated high-end chatter.  Jean had changed quite a bit since they were college girls sharing a dorm room together.  Stephen was doing well in the world, and Jean was starting to act like they were already millionaires.  It was funny and yet sad, that she was acting so much like the girls they used to make fun of in their dorm room late at night.

Jean’s name was called and she returned and the girls sat down to share some gossip.  This time, though, the gossip Carla had in mind was going to be very personal.  “So,” she took a sip of her iced mocha and then smiled, “how’s everything going with that yoga class?  I’m almost sorry I didn’t join with you, you look so good.  You’re glowing.”

Jean smiled big and nodded.  “Oh God, yeah, it’s great.  It’s really helped me to center myself and,” she leaned in over the table and Carla thought she was going to spill the beans right there, “it has been so good for my core.”

Carla was sure her jaw was on the table.  She was absolutely in awe of her friend’s ability to ignore that there was anything else to the story.  But, she composed herself and shook her head in amazement.  “Well, it’s obvious it’s working for you.
And how about that instructor of yours?
That time I saw him at your anniversary party, I thought he was absolutely gorgeous, especially that sandy hair of his, so artfully hanging in his eyes.  It gives him a real poetic look.”

Jean nodded enthusiastically.  “Oh God, I know, but that’s really not his best part.  You should see his ass when he’s doing some of the positions.  It’s to die for.”

Carla frowned.  “Jean, you’re married.  Aren’t you a little ashamed to talk that way?”

“God, Carla, don’t be such a prude.  We always talk about guys.”  She looked at her friend like she was acting crazy.  And, as Carla thought about her next move, she figured she just might be.

Sighing, she decided to just go for it.  “Why are you cheating on Stephen, Jean?”

Jean sat back as if she had just been slapped, but she managed to keep the smile on her face.  “Wow, where did that bit of crazy come from?”

Carla looked her friend in the eye.  “It’s not crazy, Jean,
it’s
true.  I got here early today and I saw you with him.”  Jean started to deny it, but Carla talked over her.  “I saw you with him by your car, Jean, and I’m no idiot.  That was no friendship hug.”

Jean’s face turned ugly with anger for a moment, and then it just relaxed and her body deflated.  “Oh my God, I didn’t mean for it to happen.  He was just there and I couldn’t help it.  I’ll stop the affair.”  She sat up and started searching her bag for her phone.  “I’ll call him right now and tell him it’s off.”

Carla reached across the table and snatched the phone from her friend’s hand.  “No, you won’t.”

Jean looked at her, shocked.  “Oh Jesus, you’re going to tell Stephen aren’t you?  Oh God, Carla, you can’t, please.”

Carla set the phone softly down on the table and sighed, as if she were wrestling with what had already been settled in her head.  “No, I guess not.”  Relief flooded her friend’s features, but Carla kept talking.  “But you’re going to have to do something for me.”

Jean looked at her friend carefully, trying to detect the favor before it was asked.  “What is it, Carla?”

Carla took another sip of her mocha to wet her suddenly dry throat.  “I want you to set up a threesome with you and Stephen and me.”  She didn’t look at her friend, just focused on her drink instead, until the quiet became too noticeable, and she pulled her eyes up to see her friend with an absolutely floored expression on her face.

“You what?!”

Carla steeled herself and repeated her request.  “I said that I will not tell Stephen about your little sidebar if you agree to set up a threesome with you and Stephen and me.”

She thought Jean might go ballistic, refuse, scream, storm out, but she didn’t do any of those things.  She just sat there with the shocked expression on her face.  And then she smiled.  “Oh hell, you still like him, don’t you?”

Carla felt color rise in her cheeks and fought to remain calm.  “It’s not that, Jean.  I just think you deserve a little punishment and I think Stephen should be the one to give it to you, even if he doesn’t know what he’s really doing.”

Jean gave her a look that said she didn’t believe her for a minute.  “Well, okay.  Let’s say that’s the case.  How am I supposed to get Stephen to go for this?  He’s a very traditional guy.”

“You know what, Jean, that’s not my problem.  Figure it out and call me when you are ready for me.”  Carla stood up.  “I’m not kidding, Jean, you need to do this or I’m telling him everything.”

Jean smirked.  “You think you know everything, but you don’t.  Damn, you know what?  I’m going to do this.  It even sounds like it could be some fun.  So, I’ll let you know when things are ready.”  Jean stood and gathered her purse and her keys.  Carla sat there, dumbstruck by her friend’s attitude, but thankful that she hadn’t thrown any punches like she used to do in her college days.  Finally, with a tense goodbye hug, Jean left and Carla fell into her chair to wonder how she had managed to invent such as plan.  And, in her deepest heart, she was overjoyed that it had worked.

The call from Jean didn’t come until four days later while Carla was at work.  Jumping when she saw who it was, she took her phone and left the office.  When she pressed the contact button for Jean, her hands
were
shaking.  Jean talked only briefly, telling her to come over at seven.  “And wear something decent, would you?”

Jean had hung up before Carla could ask her what she meant, but then she realized what she had set in motion and she smiled and shook at the same time.  She was finally going to be with Stephen, but his wife, her best friend was going to be right there with them.  All the time they had spent together in college and not once had Carla considered doing anything naughty with Jean.  It had just not been in her to think of being with a woman, but tonight she was going to be with her first, and it would be her best friend.  The thought thrilled her and terrified her at the same time and she spent the rest of the day at work with her filled with different scenarios of how the night might go.

When work was over, she ran home to scour her closet for an outfit that would rock Stephen’s world.  She finally settled on a little black miniskirt and a gold sleeveless top that highlighted her nice hazel eyes and blond hair.  She also picked out a plain gold choker that ringed her slender neck and accented her delicate shoulders.  She kept her
make-up simple, only going wild in her choice of lipstick, a hot cherry red that made her full lips stand out even more.  She wore heels, of course, and enjoyed the way they seemed to make her legs seem so toned and sleek.  As she looked at the final package, she smiled.  Stephen would have to be blind to not appreciate her now.

She hurriedly got back into her car, realizing as she looked at her watch that she had taken more time getting ready than she had thought.  As she drove, she felt giddy.  After all these years of pining for him, she was going to have her chance at last.

She pulled up to their house and saw that both cars were in the driveway.  She thought that Stephen must be doing well because he had traded the Lexus in for a brand new Mercedes.  She touched it lightly with her hand as she walked by it to the front door.  Standing on the porch, she rang the bell and was disappointed when it wasn’t immediately opened.  Sucking in her breath and feeling her stomach muscles stretch and then bunch nervously, she rang the bell a second time.

The door opened and there Jean stood, looking very good herself in a light summer dress that flowed about her tanned toned body like a fabric halo.  Carla had always envied Jean’s ability to wear anything well on her athletic frame, and she felt envious now.  But she put her feelings aside because she knew this was her show tonight.

Jean led her to the front room where Stephen sat on the couch, a drink in his hand, and his eyes on the TV.  Carla stopped for a moment to admire him as he sat unaware of her.  His dark hair was now cut short, but she remembered how it had hung to his shoulders in college and how she had teased him, calling him hippie and peacenik.  It still looked wonderful, though, and his eyes, though they were currently turned away from her, she could still see in all their grey-blue glory.  They always seemed to swallow her completely when she looked into them.

Stephen finally noticed her when Jean went over and took his glass to refill it.  He turned and smiled, jumping up from the couch and walking over to give her a hug.  “Hey,
Carlita
, how’s it been?”

His embrace was warm and friendly, but Carla felt so much more tonight as the strong arms pulled her close.  She was content in that moment and entirely comfortable.  She hugged back and then pulled away as Jean came up with Stephen’s drink.  “I’m doing alright.”  For a hard few minutes, she struggled to just tell Stephen everything and call
the whole deal off.  After all, he was her friend, too, for almost as long as Jean had been.  Did she really want to use his wife’s indiscretion as a tool to get to him?  But then, he smiled at her again and her heart ached for him.  And another part of her body began to ache as well.
