My eighteen-wheeler and me, we were supposed to be the surprise of the night.

The portal that Ms. Crystobal opened went from my spot to a place about 120 floors up, midair, just outside the Black Building.

My eighteen-wheeler drove through the portal. Suddenly the road was gone from beneath the rig. We glided gracefully through the air for a few brief seconds. The feeling of weightlessness in that massive machine was kind of thrilling. I could see my reflection in the building’s dark windows. I had a huge smile on my face.

My rig and I collided straight into the Black Building and burst through into the 120th floor.

I’d forgotten about the airbag. It burst open in my face. I tore it away and tossed it out of the window.

The eighteen-wheeler bounced along for a second or two until I regained control of it.

Then I put it in line with the metal coffin. It appeared to be a mile off in the center of the room. I pressed the gas and drove straight toward it.

My job was to rescue the Red Man.

Somewhere in my mind, I could hear Theo.

He was screaming.
