I started writing this tale for my brother Kyle about ten years ago. It was to be a film script, but it was shelved and never finished. Then, it was to be made into a manuscript after
The Alchemist’s Key
, but another Chosen trilogy came along, and once again
Book of Dreams
was shelved.

A year or so ago I was telling Kyle of my forthcoming projects when he asked, ‘Whatever happened to my story?’

I must admit I felt a twinge of guilt. I considered that I owed Kyle a tale, having borrowed bits of his character for so many of the characters in my other tales, (Brockwell/Brian and Rhun in the Ancient Future Series and Wade Ashby in
The Alchemist’s Key
). Thus I dug this half-a-film-script out of my computer archives, and found myself being tickled by the characters all over again. Yes, this one did have to be finished.

So, Kyle, here is your story, I hope it lives up to expectation, after such a long wait … thanks for being so patient.

I must also thank the Matts who all contributed to the character of Kyle’s best mate in this tale — Matt Burns, Matt English and Matt Wollaston.

Also to the girls behind Zoe’s character, Marie-Claire Wollaston and Joey Ludgate, thanks girls.

On the research front thanks to Anne-Marie Mengel for aiding with land rights research and Rob Samson for help with researching indigenous Australian mythological animals.

My gratitude goes to Linda Funnell at HarperCollins, for taking a chance on our concept for the cover art for this book.

The beautiful creatures that adorn this cover were the creations of Mo Hine, a fabulous woman of extraordinary talent. Many, many thanks for the time, energy and imagination that you poured into this project.

A chug on the shoulder for my husband, David, for piecing this cover together, and kisses to my daughter Sarah Jane Harding, because she likes to look for her name in the front of my books — so there it is.

I must also say many thanks to Chez, for taking care of my Trazling site and my online newsletter, and hello to all those who frequent my message board. Thanks to Fiona at HarperCollins for maintaining my author site … we at the THC message board are very grateful for all your hard work.

As always, my thanks and praise to my editors Sue and Stephanie … here’s to number nine, girls!

And last, but by no means least, blessings to my wonderful agent, Selwa Anthony.
