Sometimes you want a little something special
for your cast-on edge. One way to do that is to go back and add a knitted or crocheted trim later, but why not add pizzazz
while
you cast on? These next cast ons create edges with loops or picots, sparks of interest to liven up your knitting.

The Lace Cast On is a simple cast on
that creates decorative loops along the edge. It would be useful for edges where you will be picking up stitches later or tying on fringe. By itself, it tends to curl unless you follow it with rows of garter, ribbing, moss, or seed stitch that help it to lie flat. Note that the sequence described produces two stitches.

Make a slip knot, leaving a short tail, and place it on the left-hand needle.

Wrap the working yarn from back to front, over the top of the left-hand needle, to make a yarnover.

Insert the right-hand needle between the slip knot and the yarnover, in between the needle and the yarn under it.

Wrap the yarn around the needle and pull through a loop.

Transfer the new stitch from the right-hand needle to the left-hand needle knitwise.
