Next row: *With yarn in front, slip 1 stitch purlwise, move yarn to back, K1; repeat from * across row.

Repeat steps 6 and 7 once more (a total of 4 rows worked).

Beginning to Knit

Begin working K1, P1 ribbing. After a few rows, pull waste yarn out of the beginning row. You may have to snip it every couple of stitches and pick it out of the edge.

Getting It Right

• Use a needle size suitable for ribbing, usually one or two sizes smaller than needles used for garment, for this cast on.

• Make sure your waste yarn is smooth and easy to pull out.

Yarnover Tubular Cast On

This tubular cast on begins with
a Chained Cast On (
page 39
) in half the number of stitches needed. The remaining stitches are then added with yarnovers, followed by tubular knitting and then ribbing. It is an excellent choice for working in the round and for K2, P2 as well as K1, P1 ribbing. Because of the yarnovers, using a needle two sizes smaller than the ribbing can keep the edge from flaring out. Swatch to see how it works for you.

Extras
Waste yarn; crochet hook; knitting needles two sizes smaller than required for the ribbing
