Charity (33 page)

Sebastian looked horrified by the thought of being forced into wedlock, even though his cousin seemed perfectly happy after falling into his marriage in that very way. He
cleared his throat. “Well, here she is, safe and sound. I think I’ll take my chances on the dark roads and go back to the inn at the border.” He glanced at Mercy and gave her a reluctant smile. “It’s safer there. Behave yourself, urchin.”

He released her arm, ruffled her hair fondly, and left the keep.

Charity slipped her arms around her husband’s waist and looked around at all the people she loved most in the world. She lifted shining eyes to Lachlan. “Let’s go to bed,” she whispered.

“Our guests . . .” he started to say, and then stopped and laughed at the obstinate look on his wife’s face. “I can see that you intend to have your way on this, Lady Asheburton.”

Charity nodded firmly, grasped his hand and began leading him toward the stairs. “I intend, Lord Asheburton, to have my way with you for the rest of the night.”

That, Lachlan promptly decided, was the most agreeable suggestion he’d heard the entire day. “Charity is . . . tired,” he said to the rest of the room by way of explanation for their sudden decision to retire.

Cleo Egerton thunked her cane on the floor. “Bah! She doesn’t look tired to me.”

Lachlan stopped, a comical expression on his face, only to have his arm tugged again by his wife. “Good night,” he finished with a sheepish grin. Then he turned, scooped his giggling wife up into his arms, and disappeared up the stairs, taking them two at a time.
