Chase Part 1: A New Adult and College Billionaire Romance (Chase Me Billionaire Romance Series) (8 page)

“Well it’s funny. He always asks for people’s names and shit when he’s checking possible staff out, you know?”

“That sounds pretty normal.”

“Yeah, but when I told him your name, he called his wife downstairs and told her your name too.”

“That is weird.”

“No, that’s not the weird part, man. She asked me what you looked like, and who you were here with. And when I told her your description, and said you were with Meaghan Connors, she turned white as a sheet.

“The lady pulled my boss aside, and they talked in the next room for a while. I waited a long time, man. It sounded like she was crying a bit. When he came back out, he said you’re hired. He’s never hired anyone without the mechanic shop manager interviewing them first. So you’re hired man!”

“What? Really? That’s cool. I wonder why?”

“I don’t know, Chase, but I don’t get paid to ask questions, you know what I mean? Anyway.
This
next thing is the craziest part.”

“Oh.
That
wasn’t?”

“No, no,” he said and laughed. “Do you know a Marsha Moscov?”

“Never heard of her.”

“Well she knows you.”

“Wait a minute. Isn’t Moscov the name of our landlord?”

“Yes it is. The landlord is my boss’s brother. Marsha Moscov is my boss’s wife. She came back to talk to me after Mr. Moscov hired you, and told me to give you this envelope. She said you’d remember.”

“I can’t think of any Marsha Moscov,” he answered, confused as he took the thick manila envelope. “The only Marsha I know is my mom, but her name was West like mine. It has to be Connors now, or maybe Gerald if she went back to her maiden name.”

Chase looked at his name on the envelope. He was in disbelief. It couldn’t be. It
was
from his mother. Her handwriting was unmistakable.

“Hey, thanks for bringing this over. I gotta tell Meaghan okay? I’ll talk to you later.”

“Sure thing. My boss said you can start tomorrow or next week. Whenever you want, just call him to let him or the garage manager know. See you later, bud.”

Chase let Jose out and locked the door. He was shell-shocked. He walked slowly to Meaghan’s bedroom, hands trembling, unable to think or react. He crawled into bed with her, and saw she had fallen asleep. He shook her on the shoulder.

“Meaghan. Wake up. Meaghan, look.”

“What, hun?” she turned to him and saw the envelope. “Who was that outside?”

“Jose. He got this from my—from our—he got this from Mom, Meg.”

“What? What do you mean, Chase? You’re not making sense.”

“Take it. See for yourself. I can’t look inside. You check. I can’t—” his voice trailed off.

Meaghan opened the envelope and her eyes almost popped out of her head. Inside, at the top, was a two-inch thick wad of hundred dollar bills. She pulled it out. It was so much money, she couldn’t imagine how much it could actually be. She held it in her hand the same way she had held the money from Aunt Jennifer. This wad was so much thicker, and it was all hundreds! She couldn’t believe it.

She set it between them on the bed, and looked in the envelope again. There were three sets of keys, and a folded note. She pulled out the note and unfolded it.

The note read…

To Chase West

Hello son,

I heard you were in town. I’m sorry I never came back for you, but we can catch up, as soon as you’re ready.

This is some spare cash for you and Meaghan. How is she doing? I miss the two of you so much.

Chase, there’s so much more I can give you, including my love, when the time is right. I hope it’s not too late to make up for all my mistakes, son.

Love always,

Mom

PS. The keys are for two cars (you and Meaghan need to have something to get around in) and a bike (you always loved watching David’s bike next door, remember?). I’ll have the vehicles delivered, and they’ll be outside your place by tomorrow morning. I hope you like Harleys.
