Rebecca turned and looked at me and I do believe that I had never seen her so moved. She was completely lost for words.

‘It worked for Selwyn,' I shrugged off my little poetic outburst.

‘He never,' she called my bluff. ‘You composed something romantic and it was beautiful. Thank you.'

The kiss I received in appreciation told me it was well worthwhile developing a knack for romantic rhyme.

We talked about our soul-quest at great length that night, and I began to see a whole new chapter in our relationship that I very much liked the look of. At last, my wife and I had found a common cause, and as Rebecca was to be my constant travelling companion, I felt sure that I would very much enjoy the next big adventure the universe held in store.

With every new book I write there are more and more people who contribute to its realisation. I must state, for the record, that this trilogy was brought into being by all those avid readers of The Ancient Future who refused to believe the tale of the Chosen had ended. Each one of your letters and emails has in some way contributed to this book. You were all quite right to believe, for the adventures of the Chosen have only just begun.

I must thank my family and friends for seeing me through another year and another story — especially my husband, David, who continues to defy the imagination with his artwork for my tales. David's aid with the upbringing of our beautiful daughter, Sarah, during the past year has been essential to the completion of this book. I would not have made the deadline without the cooperation and support of my loving little family unit.

I am forever grateful to my editors, Sue and Stephanie, for ploughing their way through another tale of epic proportions — only two more to go girls. On the research front, I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Anwen Pierce at the National Library of Wales, who chased up ancient place names for me that were long lost in history. Many thanks also to Caiseal Mòr for saving me days of research with every email.

I am deeply indebted to my agent, Selwa Anthony, and my publishers, HarperCollins, for their continued efforts in promoting me.
