Dancing on a Moonbeam (Bedford Falls Book 1) (41 page)

Breathing heavily, she straightened and looked nervously at Anya and Max. Neither of them had made a sound.

Max stared at her with awe.

Anya was the opinion that mattered most though. The dancer's eyes were narrowed, and her hand was curled under her chin.

Oh God—she didn't like it. Eleanor stepped forward. "I—"

"That was the Eleanor Westwood I remember," Anya said with a small nod. "Not the dancing, of course."

Relief hit her, and her lips twitched. "Of course," Eleanor said. "But the choreography?"

"Brilliant. I told you it would be." Anya resettled her purse on the crook of her arm as she headed for the door. "I'll have the office send you a contract. Don't expect millions just because you're my friend."

She gazed after the woman, shaking her head. "Well, that was anticlimactic."

"She was right. It was brilliant." Max smiled at her, hands in his pockets.

Facing him, she took the rubber band from her hair to let it fall to her shoulders. She saw the way he reacted to the simple act, his body going taut. She wondered if he was trying not to touch her.

One way to find out. She walked up to him, standing right in front of him. "I've been thinking that since you don't like bootie calls that we should come up with an arrangement."

His expression softened into sadness. "I can't, Eleanor. I can't have a fling with you. You're too important, and you deserve more. I love you."

Her heart swelled up, with love and also with fear.

But she wouldn't let the fear control her or her future, so she linked her arms around his neck, careful not to press her body to his. "That's convenient, because I was thinking something more permanent."

"Permanent?" he repeated, his brow furrowed.

"Like forever, because I love you too." She exhaled, wilting against him a little, trying to calm her pounding heart. "That was scary."

He chuckled, holding her close, tenderly. "At least you didn't pass out."

"I wouldn't because I wouldn't want to miss any of this." She cupped his face and looked him in the eye. "I'm afraid you'll compromise your dreams to be with me."

"My music is a part of me," he said. "It goes where I go. I've already talked to my producer to make it a condition that I work remotely. I may still have to go to LA occasionally, but I'm staying here. You and Lily are my dream."

She blinked. "And it doesn't seem like a nightmare to you?"

He ran a hand through her hair, anchoring her with his other arm. "It's the kind of dream that you never want to wake up from."

Standing on her toes, she kissed him. "I love you," she murmured.

He smiled against her lips. "You didn't hyperventilate that time. That's progress. Just think how easy it'll be in thirty years."

She stilled. "You think we'll still be together?" she couldn't help asking.

"I'm not planning on going anywhere," he said softly. Sweeping her into his arms, he looked into her eyes as he moved to the door. "Are you ready for your Happily Ever After kiss?"

"Like fairy tale princesses get?" she asked, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"Yes."

She shook her head. "No."

"No?" He stopped abruptly in the threshold, frowning at her.

Flashing him her most wicked grin, she ran a finger over the curve of his lips and said, "I'm hoping for something a little more X-rated."

His smile was slow and sultry. "You'll have that
and
forever," he promised, sealing the vow with a kiss.

DANCING ON A MOONBEAM wouldn't have been possible without…

Jim Renwick, for residential and commercial zoning info as well as plot ideas. Sorry I decided Eleanor wouldn't make a great ax murderer.

Joe "Boston" Serra, for general information on how to sabotage a construction project. All errors are mine, because Joe tells me he's brilliant.

Lael Telles, for sharing what it's like to be a former ballerina. Tutus forever!

Parisa Zolfaghari, editor extraordinaire, who makes the fairy dust I toss in the air even shinier. She's got a big wand, and she's not afraid to use it.

Michelle Stewart, eagle eye and all-around goddess. Love is her superpower, and she's mighty.

Sienna Condy, who understands what I need before I do most of the time. Here's to setting the world afire!

Jade Eby, because her calm, smiling attitude makes my world such a better place. I believe she walks through life with unicorns and rainbows in her wake.

Your angel wings are in the mail.
