She’s also been reconstructing every mission we’ve ever done. It’s kind of creepy how much she remembers without looking it up.” She toyed with the buttons on his shirt.
“She is convinced that there is a piece of the puzzle yet missing, and she may be right. How are you doing?” The depth of feeling he experienced just holding her filled him with wonder. The need for physical companionship and romantic entanglements never appealed to him before and yet—
I love her.
The corners of his mouth deepened into a wider smile.
I love you.
“Well, I’m doing pretty good then.” Her grin softened, and she fluttered her eyelashes at him. “Of course, if you’re just trying to sweeten me up for sex, I can tell you I’m pretty much a sure thing for you these days.”
The bawdy comments, the sassy smile—they’d survived the fall of shadows and pain. In every respect she had the right to melancholia and bitterness, but she possessed neither. Like Rory, she offered them another torch of hope and the Boomers would need that light. Especially now.
“Tell me it’s going to be okay.” She nuzzled his neck and hugged him tight. “It will be hard and we’re going to have struggles and we still have to figure out where Michael and Rex are—where Josh is.” Her voice growled on that. Yes, the resentment the women felt toward their former teammate was understandable. Betrayal was ugly. “But I want to know, do you believe it will be okay?”
Did he? He pondered the answer, cradling her closer to him. She filled his mind with her impertinent little thoughts. She warmed his bed. She freed his heart.
“Yes.” He nodded slowly. “I think it will be, but it will cost us.”
“Eh, at least we’re not cheap.”
He laughed and pressed a kiss to her lips. “I have work to do.”
She twined her arms around his neck. “Later.”
He couldn’t deny her, so he didn’t bother to try. Holding Amanda fulfilled him on a level he couldn’t define. For the first time since she’d awoken, he accessed his chip. Ilsa had reset them all, so they worked only when activated, and he’d left his quiet…’til now.
Target identified: Amanda Kincaid, also known as Corkscrew. Known abilities: nuclear fission and fusion, absorbs energy and fires beams of radiated heat.
Suggested defense: Protect her.
Suggested offense: Do not harm her.
Well, then…for once, he and the chip were in perfect accord.
Update.
He concentrated on the chip.
Amanda Kincaid is mine.
A chirp echoed inside his mind.
Target identified, Amanda Kincaid—yours.
“Hey,” she murmured against his lips. “No mental wandering while kissing me.”
“No wandering at all,” he promised. “I’m not going anywhere.” Come what may, he was hers.
