Depth of Deception (A Titanic Murder Mystery) (51 page)

He strained to listen for that sound of breathing. The only thing he could hear wa
s the approach of a horse and carriage. He turned to see the unmistakable form of a Hansom Cab. Abberline raised his hand to signal the driver. The driver pulled on the reins and brought the horse to a stop.

"
Where to, Guv’nor?
"
asked the driver from atop the carriage.

"
41 Mayflower Road, off Clapham,
"
replied Abberline as he climbed in. Only after the carriage was well on its way, did Abberline risk taking the card out of his pocket. He recognized the pattern on the back as a common Hoyle deck. It may have already been there and had nothing to do with the hole that was dug beneath the Obelisk but as a detective he never ignored any detail. He turned the card over – the Jack of Spades.
