The boat sliced through the water and carried them away from the docks.

Below deck, she grabbed a jacket then returned to Gianni. His alert watchfulness eased the tightness in her neck. Whatever he had experienced in D zone, wherever his mind had gone, he was back. She slid the jacket over his shoulders.

“Sit with me.” He pulled her down to the bench and wrapped his arms around her. Pulled her in close. His warmth seeped into her. He was home to her. The only real home she had ever known.

The boat carried them farther out to sea.

She took a deep breath. Then another. Fresh air sweetened her lungs. Something tugged against her neck. “I almost forgot.” She reached up to take off the St. Jude me
dal.

“You keep it.” Gianni closed his hands over hers.

“But it’s been in your family for generations.”

He tilted her head back and pressed his lips to hers. “You’re my family now.”

His words floated through her ears, curved down her neck, and settled in her heart. “And you’re mine.”
