LIKE many of you, I was first introduced to Doc Savage and his five aides by reading the Bantam Book reprints that ran from 1964-1990. But whether you became a Doc fan from the original pulps, the Bantam reprints, Will Murray’s 1991-93 series or more recently through Will’s new Wild Adventures of Doc Savage, all of us who read Doc share a love of adventure, science fiction, suspense and American heroes. The Doc Savage covers have also enjoyed an amazing evolution over the last 80 years featuring a select number of very talented artists including Walter Baumhofer in the ’30s, James Bama in the ’60s Bob Larkin in the ’80s and Joe DeVito since the ’90s.
An opportunity to collaborate on a classic Doc Savage 80th anniversary cover with both Will Murray and Joe DeVito was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me. Both Joe and Will brought so much to the table during the discussion and planning phase, it was an absolute pleasure for this Doc fan to work alongside them. Poring over the details and nuances of the poses, the settings, the backgrounds, the lighting and then watching Joe bring all of our ideas to life made for a wonderful experience, and for this I am thankful and appreciative to both Will and Joe.
I also want to thank my wife Carlita who has patiently stood by and supported my Doc Savage collecting over the last 35 years. I know it was not always easy. I sincerely hope that you and all who are reading this enjoy a classic Doc Savage 80th Anniversary cover painting and adventure.
