This question brought a big smile to his face. “Well,” he started, “I’m not sure of all the details that you’ve been told, but I’m the film guy around here.”
“Is that right?”
“Yeah,” he beamed. “When we go to the track or street race, I record it all.”
This had me intrigued. “What is it exactly that you record?”
“Racing, drifting, and everything in between. Did you go to the race earlier?” I shook my head. “Oh, well, I recorded that. Then, I’ll eventually integrate it with all the other videos I’ve taken.”
“So, you’re saying you tag along with the racers, in their car, while they race?” I asked confused.
He shook his head. “Not all the time. Most of the time my buddies, Steven or Joe and I, follow along in my car and record it from the outside. That way we get the full effect of the race or whatever it is they are doing.”
I wanted to ask why. I didn’t understand the purpose of any of it, but I guess I wouldn’t. It seemed to be a guy thing. Then again, it was a girl thing to, but in a total different capacity. The girls liked to watch, but they had a different reason for watching.
As Devon went on and on about all the types of things he recorded and what he did to incorporate it all together, I glanced over at all the girls hovering around Landon. I could see what Lisa was talking about, because it truly was comical. If only they could see how desperate they looked. They were like dogs begging for the last milk bone. I still didn’t see what the big deal was. He worked on a farm and raced cars. Was I missing something? Maybe he had a ten-inch penis and I was being left out of the loop. That would be the only reason I could see all the girls swarming, although, that would probably make me flee. I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to handle something like that.
Focusing back on Devon, he was finishing a story about him and a buddy doing a burnout in the middle of a busy street that caused a pile up of cars behind him. “That was some fun shit. The smoke plumed up and engulfed about five cars. It was awesome. We were lucky to get out of there before the police came.”
“Yeah,” I scoffed. “You guys got lucky with that one.” I wanted to roll my eyes, but he seemed so excited about it. He didn’t notice how uninterested I was. I’d always been polite in uninteresting conversations by nodding and smiling. Maybe that was the wrong tactic to use in this situation because he seemed to be oblivious.
I turned to see where Lisa was, but she and Derek were no longer by the cooler. Holding a hand up to my head, I rubbed at my temples as a slight wave of dizziness came over me. Frowning, I looked back at Devon and interrupted his new story. “Did you see where Lisa and Derek went?”
He looked at me confused, and then darted his gaze behind me before looking around the clearing. “No. I didn’t even notice them walk off,” he said, still looking around.
I drank more of my drink and stood there with a hand on my hip trying to find them, which wasn’t an easy feat in the dark.
“Wait here. I have to get another drink anyway. I’ll tell Lisa you’re looking for her if I see her.” He gave me a slight smile before he walked off.
I watched him walk away and continued to drink from my bottle. I was definitely feeling the effects of the alcohol. My body felt flushed and I was pretty sure that if I started bustin’ some moves to this country music they had blaring, I would be the hit of the party. I laughed out loud at the thought.
I scanned the clearing for Lisa again, but had no luck; instead, my gaze landed on the group of blondes. A part of me wanted to march over there and ask all the girls what the deal was with Landon, but my non-semi-drunk self was holding me back. So I just stood there and watched the show. The one that was standing next to him like a second skin wasn’t there any longer, but there were still quite a few there. Most of them were off to the side having girl time, but you could see the persistent ones watching his every move.
"Ya want him, don't ya?" I heard a snarky voice say behind me.
I turned slightly to see the tall blonde haired beauty who had her hands all over Landon, standing with her arms folded over her chest. Now that she was closer, I could see that she was a natural blonde, but I wasn’t sure if all of her other features were all natural. She was busting out of the tight short dress she was wearing and I looked down to see that she was wearing heels too, in the grass.
Did she say what I think she just said? I’ve never even met this chick and what; she’s accusing me of staring at her boy toy.
I turned fully toward her, cocked my head to the side and smiled ruefully. "How rude of me," I said sarcastically. "Where are my
manners
? Hi, I'm Sadie." I extended my hand with a big smile on my face. Killing her with kindness, but she ignored it. Maybe she knew that trick.
She stealthily walked closer to me and then jutted out one of her hips. "I've noticed ya starin’ at him," she said pointedly.
“If you mean him, as in Landon, then you’ve got the wrong idea, chickadee. I’m not staring at him. I’m watching the harlots,” I snorted at the words coming out of my mouth. “Do you see this?” I asked pointing to my hair. “It’s brown. I’m not even competition.”
"Just stay away. He’s mine." A bubbled laugh erupted from my mouth before I could contain it. "What the hell’s so funny?" she retorted. I was sure that if she could snarl at me, she would.
"You,” I laughed. “I think it's funny that you felt the need to come over here when I have no interest whatsoever. Are you really that insecure with yourself?” Another bubble of laughter erupted. I knew the situation wasn’t nearly as funny as I was making it out to be, but with everything going on in my life, the look on this chick’s face was amusing. And what the hell was she saying? “He’s yours? Did you buy him from a pound or something? Did you put a collar on him?” I shook my head to contain my laughter. “Girls like you really need to get over themselves. You give girls like me a bad name.” I turned to walk off, not wanting to be subjected to her insecurities, and ran right into a hard chest. I took a step back and would have fallen on my butt if Landon hadn’t have reached out and righted me on my feet. “What the hell?” I demanded as I looked over his face.
Dropping his hands from my arms, he looked past me to the blonde. “What’re you doing over here, Shannon?” I looked at him with a furrowed brow, watching his interaction with someone other than me. Was this a sincere question or did he suspect she was up to something?
“I was just comin’ over to say hi to Sadie.” I could hear the nervousness in her voice. “We had a nice little chat. Just gittin’ to know one another.”
I turned to see her smiling at Landon, which only fueled my desire to fuck with her in front of him. So, I smiled back at her. “Yes!” I said a little too loudly, turning back to Landon. “We had a great chat. She was just telling me how much she loves to
own
dogs.” I turned and beamed at her. The smile she donned was quickly turning to a sneer, which only made me giggle inside. I turned back toward Landon with a smile and closed the small space we had between us. He was looking at me confused, but that was to be expected. I lifted my hand up and patted him on his chest causing his eyebrows to rise up. I knew this was pushing Shannon’s buttons. Buttons I probably didn’t want to push, but I really didn’t care. I turned to her with a smile, but then faked a shocked expression by bringing my hand up to my mouth. “Uh oh, looks like someone took their collar off.”
The look on her face was priceless; she was definitely sneering at me now. I bit my lip to stop myself from laughing out loud and quickly walked off. I needed to find Lisa. I had to tell someone what just happened. I wanted so badly to look back at them, but I couldn’t. It would ruin the effect of my bitchiness.
As I was walking to the far end of the clearing, I heard my name and I turned to see Devon walking toward me. I smiled. At least he was a friendly face.
“Hey,” I greeted as he stopped a few feet away. “Did you find Lisa?”
He tilted his head down and scratched at it. When he looked back at me, he had a smirk on his face. “I may or may not have found them in a compromising position in the woods,” he chuckled.
“Oh. My. God,” I giggled. “Are you serious?” He nodded. “How embarrassing?” But what would you expect being out in nature. Anyone could walk up and see you.
“Yeah, well, that kind of thing happens out here a lot.”
“Good to know. Remind me to stay out of the woods,” I laughed.
Hearing footsteps behind me, I turned to see Lisa and Derek coming to a stop. “Thanks for ruining a perfectly good moment, Devon,” Lisa joked. Then she turned her gaze to me. “Devon said you were looking for me.”
“Yes,” I laughed. “I just had a run in with Landon’s she-devil.”
Lisa’s eyebrows shot up. “No shit!” she yelled surprised.
“Which one?” Derek asked.
“Oh, is there more than one?” I smiled. “I’m referring to the one who keeps hanging on him like a second skin. Apparently, she thinks I’m competition and I have no idea why.”
Lisa snorted. “She doesn’t think you’re competition, Sadie. That, my friend, is Shannon’s way of laying it all out for you. She does this to all the girls. She thinks she’s Landon’s number one girl, and although he doesn’t deter her from thinking it, she really isn’t anything except a guaranteed lay,” She snorted again with an added chuckle, which made me smile. “What did you say to her?”
I proceeded to tell her the whole story, which made her bend over in laughter. “You seriously said all that?” She laughed, slapping at her legs. “Oh, my God, I think I might die of laughter. I wish I could’ve been there to see her face.” She took a couple of deep breaths. “See, I told ya, didn’t I? Didn’t I?” She shoved at me.
I laughed. “That you did.”
We spent the next hour chatting about nothing important. Just hanging out and having a good time. Lisa grabbed me another bottle of her spiked punch and I accepted it with gratitude. The night was turning out to be the most fun I’d had in a long time, all except having to pee in the woods. That was not fun. I was glad I’d chosen to wear a skirt or I was sure I would have gotten pee all over my shorts.
As the excitement of the night started to wear down, I could feel my body start to tire. I’d had a good nap earlier, but my body still wasn’t used to my new schedule. I knew I had to get home so I said my goodbyes to Derek and Lisa, letting them know I was perfectly fine to drive home. Devon insisted on walking me to my car and we talked about the next race on the way there.
“You should really come next time. You might actually like it,” he persisted.
“I’ll think about it,” I smiled at him. I felt a little off balance and should have probably got someone who hadn’t been drinking that much to drive me home, but I didn’t know anyone else out here. And there was no way I’d call my mom or dad. I was sure I was fine. I knew all the back roads now and I was sure no one would be out driving this late. “Well, here’s my car,” I pointed. I’d forgotten that I’d parked far away from the other cars so I wouldn’t be blocked in. The night sky was cloudy and the moon was covered so it was almost too dark to see. But I definitely felt Devon as he got closer to me. “Wh-what are you doing?” I asked as I felt a hand on my waist.
A sudden feeling of dread settled in the pit of my stomach and a dizzy spell washed over me. I stepped back and was met with the coolness of my car at my back. I lifted my hand up to my head. I felt like I might pass out. Those drinks obviously had way more alcohol than I originally thought. I guess not knowing exactly what Lisa was giving me wasn’t a good idea after all.
With my back up against the car, Devon moved in closer, lifting his hand to the other side of my waist. Then, out of nowhere, his lips were on mine. I had no time to react. I felt too dizzy to even push him away. It was like trying to push a five-gallon bucket of sand with one finger. I had no strength. He lowered his hands down my hips until he got to the bottom of my skirt and lifted it up, getting a firm grip of my ass.
I immediately went into panic mode. I couldn’t scream because he was choking me with his tongue, so I did the only thing I could think of. I bit his tongue and I bit it hard.
“Ahhh,” he yelped, slapping at my face.
“Get away from me, asshole,” I was finally able to yell and pushed him away. Then I slapped him across the face for putting his hands all over me.
As soon as my hand made contact, I knew it was a mistake. He turned to spit and then scowled at me. “You little bitch.”
I took that as my cue to run, but before I even moved, I heard Devon being tackled to the ground. I had no idea who it was, but from the sounds of the grunts and moans, someone was getting their ass beat.
It was the perfect time for me to get into my car and haul ass, but I knew I couldn’t drive home in the condition I was in. I’d have to either call my mom or get the number for a cab service. I didn’t want to fall asleep at the wheel and crash or worse hurt someone. But I couldn’t move. My body wasn’t obeying my commands to flee.
“Get the hell up!” The new comer demanded.
My breath hitched. I knew that voice, but why was he out here.
“What the fuck, Landon?” Devon said.
I tried squinting my eyes to see better in the dark, but I couldn’t tell who was who. They both looked the same being so far away from me.
“No, Devon, that’s my question. What the fuck?” he scolded. “Is that your thing now? Pushing yourself on girls?”
I heard Devon let out a sigh and then the retching started, causing my own stomach to feel queasy.
A figure walked up to me, which could only be Landon since Devon was puking his guts out. “Are you all right?” he asked me softly.
I looked up at his shadowed face.
Was I all right?
No, not really. I was shaking from the experience. I still felt dizzy, and I wanted to get home. But I was stuck in an unfamiliar place with a bunch of people I didn’t know. “No, I’m not,” I started as tears fell down my cheeks.
“Fuck,” he mumbled under his breath, running his hand through his hair. “Come on then. I’ll take you home. Lisa can pick you up tomorrow so you can get your car,” he suggested.
