ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Whew.
The second one was definitely more challenging to write, mostly because I kept letting my worries get in the way of creativity.
I learned a great deal from my experience writing
Empyrean Age,
especially from the feedback I received from colleagues and fans alike.
This time around, my goal was simply to tell a more human story.
Hopefully I’ve created characters that you would like to read more about.

To those who read
Empyrean Age
and are not using the book as a doorstop, you have my sincerest thanks.
Templar One
would not have been possible without your support.
This is all very bizarre to me, thanking strangers.
But my development as a writer is influenced in huge part by your enthusiasm for this work.
For what it’s worth, it means a lot to me.
Thank you.

I have the honor of working with great people who may not even realize their contributions to this book.
From CCP, first and foremost I have to thank the video team: Greg Kruk, Robin Whitehead, Jói Jónsson, Oliver Nicholson, Sölvi Ingimundarson, Ólafur Haraldsson, and Jói Reynisson.
You are all brilliantly talented, and your work is an inspiration to me.

I owe thanks to the entire EVE Content team, especially Nathan Knaack, Nick Blood, Chris Cowger, and Jason Bolte for your creative guidance and support, with special thanks to Scott Holden for going the extra mile in editing the manuscript.

On the DUST 514 team, I would like to thank Gavin Frankle and Elijah Freeman for helping me navigate through this new IP.
My role in helping to shape this game is very small, but you’ve both made me feel like I was a big part of it.

I owe special thanks to the entire marketing team at CCP, particularly Mike Read and Ned Coker for giving me the kick in the pants I needed to embrace what I am just a little bit more; Elísabet Grétarsdóttir for being the voice of reason in every storm; and Greg Fountain, from whom I have learned so much.

For everyone on the hockey mailing list at CCP: The ha-ha’s and trashtalk keep me sane.
Thank you.
There’s a Hanson in every one of us.

And finally, special thanks to Hilmar, for leading with your heart, and for giving us all the chance to spread our wings a little further.

From Tor I’d like to thank Eric Raab and Katharine Critchlow, not only for your precious editorial guidance, but also for not sending mercenaries to intimidate me into finishing this draft sooner.

To my lifelong friends Brian, Ron, Mark, Keith, Ken, Darrell, and Will: Thanks for checking in on me every now and then to make sure I was still alive, especially all you new dads.
Time flies when you’re changing diapers.

To Grandma, Christina, Coco, Teo, Ines, and Angela: Thank you for helping me discover my roots.

To my extended family, George, Catherine, Alainna, Alisa, Joe, Denise, Joe Jr., Michele, Billy, Lou, Sue, Galina, Barbara, and Don: Raising toasts with you brings me happiness.
We should do it more often.

To my parents: I couldn’t live this wonderful life, let alone raise my daughter, without you.
I can never thank you enough.

To my beloved wife: Thank you for your patience and support throughout all of this, especially as we became parents.

And to my daughter: I’ve never been prouder.
I love you.
