“That
freak
was in our kingdom, near my home. He had his filthy hands on you!”

“This child and I would have been dead if not
for him!” Brook countered, livid.

Keyn leaned back and whispered, “I think we’re not needed here.”

“I second that.” Trillian held onto Keyn as they slowly hovered
and landed beside the palace’s main door. “Well, that was awkward.”

“Agreed.” Keyn shook his head.

“What’s the deal with Brook and that guy, anyway?”

“Long story.” He walked slowly, the moon faded, and the beginnings
of the sunrise lit the cloudy sky.

“So shorten it.” Trillian grabbed his hand and weaved their
fingers together.

At first Keyn stiffened but after a few steps he relaxed
considerably. “Valen is a Garcanagh. A wingless fairy that has a sole purpose
in life to seduce unwilling females with toxins in his skin.”

“Romantic,” Trillian said sarcastically.

“Don’t you ever touch him,” Keyn quickly added. When she nodded,
he continued. “He saved Brook when she first came here and took her to his
home. We never found out what went on in there, but supposedly, the queen was
untouched by his hands. She returned here, we had the ceremony to officially
call her queen, and the rest is what you see before you.”

“Yikes.” Trillian knew there was more to the story. Men never get
all the facts, even ones with wings. “So, you feeling good still?” She squeezed
his hand.

“I’m...better.” He drew out the word. “I do not feel that
horrible, gut-wrenching terror when I touch you.”

“Well, gee. Thanks.” Trillian pulled her hand away.

“I did not mean it negatively.”

“Sure.”

“I did not.”

“Prove it. Kiss me.” She grinned, playing him as she lifted her
face to his. Keyn leaned down, and though hesitant, he placed his lips against
hers. The kiss was chaste and Trillian quickly turned it into a battle of
tongues. Both were breathless when they pulled away. “Forgiven,” she said with
a smile. They continued walking down the empty path. Pink and purple sunrays
lit the way. “Do you think they’ll be okay? Brook and Carrick?”

“I do not know. Time will tell or the quick death of a Garcanagh.”

“Oh, violent.”

“Speaking truth,” Keyn added then he grasped her hand and held it.
“I take it back.”

“What?”
“What I said when we first met. I do care about you. Trillian, I want you as my
mate.”

She smiled, wide and genuine. “Well, I’ll think about it.” He picked
her up and spun her around, and when her laughing finally stopped, Keyn took
her into the sky. They flew higher and higher with the clouds forming around
them and the kingdom slowly disappearing beneath.Apart they were shattered but
together they were unbroken.
