“No, I have Rogeritis.”

“Huh?” Charlie asked as if she couldn’t compute what Kate was saying.

Kate pointed toward the door. “That lunatic came to Nordstrom today and bought some clothes for his son and then insisted to taking me to lunch. One of my co-workers volunteered that I hadn’t gone to lunch yet, so I had to go with him. It was horrifying. He told me that he has fallen for me and wants to take me out when he returns from Germany. I’ve literally felt sick ever since.”

The look on Charlie’s face said it all. It was a mixture of shock and revulsion. “This is insane. I’m so glad that we’re moving out of here. But, you need to put in for a transfer to a different Nordstrom. He will come to find you again at work.”

“I talked to HR late this afternoon. I put in for a transfer. There are a couple of openings that I have to interview for. Do you think changing to a different store is going to be enough?” she asked. She suddenly felt like she was going to throw up. She ran to the bathroom, but it was just dry heaves. She left the bathroom and went to lie down on her bed. Mitch and Charlie joined her in her room.

“Kate, I hate to say it, but Roger will probably look for you at the other Nordstrom’s. He will assume that you transferred instead of quitting your job,” Mitch said as he plopped down on Kate’s overstuffed chair. Charlie sat on the arm of the chair and Mitch wrapped his arms around her.

“Have you told Neil yet?” Charlie asked.

As if on cue, Kate’s phone rang. It was Neil. She managed to shake her head and Charlie nodded. “Come on, Mitch. Let’s give her some privacy.”

Kate pressed the send button. Before she could speak Neil said, “Good evening, my beauty. I’ve been thinking about you all day.”

“Hi, honey,” she said, feeling over-wrought from the day’s events.

“What’s wrong? Did something else happen with Roger?”

She explained to Neil what had happened. He was furious. “Damn it. I wish you were here with me right now. I can’t wait for you to be away from this guy.”

“I know. Me, too. I managed to convince Roger that I am very sick. He’s going to keep his distance. He leaves for Germany tomorrow. I want to come over, but if I leave now he’s going to know and become suspicious. He might follow me. I don’t want to do anything that will make him act out or hurt anyone. I need to keep treating him carefully.”

“You’re right. I just can’t stand that he is trying to weasel his way into your life. As soon as he is gone, we’ll figure it all out. My top priority is to make you feel safe again. I love you, baby. I just want you to be safe.”

“I do feel safe and protected by you. I love that you are looking out for me. I’m so lucky to have you in my life.”

“I’m the lucky one, my beauty.”

Chapter 20

On Roger’s return flight, he thought about seeing his son. Visiting Jacob and his ex-girlfriend had been wonderful. During their month together, he convinced Paulina that it would be best for Jacob to have a dad in his life. Things hadn’t been going that well for Paulina. It had been difficult for her to keep a job and her dating prospects were limited since she was a devoted mother. So it was easy to get her to agree to move back to the states. Roger promised to help her find a job. He also told her that she and Jacob could live with him until she got on her feet. He was very pleased with himself. He wanted to be near his son and be part of his life. He also figured that he could get Paulina to have sex with him whenever he wanted. Since she was European, she didn’t have the same hang-ups as American women. She was much more sexually free. He remembered with great excitement some of their romps in the hay. Paulina had a great body that he was all too familiar with it. He was looking forward to being reacquainted with her curves very soon. The only problem was that it would take time for her to get her affairs in order. Her plan was to move to America in three to six months. Jacob was very excited to move back to California. He wanted nothing more than to spend time with his dad.

Now he had to come up with a plan to woo Kate before Paulina arrived. This could be interesting. He hadn’t ever had two women on a string before. Thinking about having both of them in his bed made him very aroused. In his perfect world, he would have them both in his bed at the same time. Sadly, he knew that Kate would never go for something like that. Paulina, on the other hand, just might consider it. So he needed to have his full of Kate until Paulina arrived. Then he would decide who he wanted and what to do with the extra one.

Now he knew that he had made the right decision in getting rid of Rose. It had been a difficult choice at the time. He knew that there was the possibility of being caught even though he was very good at getting rid of the evidence. But, so far, the police had nothing on him. He had covered his tracks well. Having her money had come in handy for his trip. He looked at it as her final gift to him. She had always been the giving one in their relationship. It was her nature and he was more than happy to receive.

Eliminating Mark had been a spur-of-the-moment decision. He had driven to East County to discard his body. He took the body out in the middle of the night and had dumped him in the middle of nowhere. He had a perfect hiding spot that he had used before. The chances of Mark’s body being found were slim to none.

Roger’s flight finally landed. He was so excited that he wanted to see Kate right away. Maybe she would wake up and invite him into her bed. Tonight could be the night that he finally got to fuck her. Well, a guy could hope. He got a cab and was on his way to her. It was about midnight and he figured that she was probably sleeping. He quietly climbed the stairs and put his luggage away. He took a quick shower and brushed his teeth. Then he grabbed his master key. He listened at the door of her apartment for any sign of movement. He waited three full minutes to make sure that she and Charlie were sleeping. He turned the key slowly and quietly pushed the door open. He had a lot of practice sneaking up on people so he knew that they wouldn’t hear him. The apartment seemed different, but he wasn’t sure how. It was really dark, so it was hard to tell at first what had changed. As he approached Kate’s bedroom, his eyes finally began to adjust to the darkness. Her room was empty. She was gone. He walked right in and he found nothing. No bed, dresser, nightstand. He put the light on in the closet. Her room was completely vacant. He searched the rest of the apartment and found it empty. He was furious. How dare she leave without telling him. What does this mean?
Did she think that he was guilty?
The only thing he was guilty of was getting Rose out of the way so that they could be together. Why couldn’t she understand?

He exited the apartment. He was enraged. He wanted to hurt someone. He wanted to hurt them badly. He decided to go to the nearest bar. Perhaps there will be a guy drunk enough that he could beat up on or worse. Getting out his aggressions was really important right now. He wanted to be calm when he found Kate. He had to convince her that they belonged together. He had to make her listen.
I will find her no matter what it takes!
