Tanner looked thoughtful.

“What is it? Share with me, please, Tanner. Don’t hold it inside.”

He looked at her, and his beautiful blue eyes made her weak. God, she loved him so much.

“The other night, when I was so upset about you being with Gianni?”

“Yes.”

“I just can’t stand the thought of you with anyone else.”

“But I’m not, Tanner. I’m only with you.”

Tanner smiled and reached out for her hands, pulling her next to him. He held her to his chest, and she looked up, trying to tell what he was thinking.

“I have to tell you that when I said I loved you at the cottage that time, I worked up to that for a long time.”

Natalie really knew that already, but didn’t say anything.

“I thought finally being able to express my love for you would make everything easier after that. It didn’t. Telling you I loved you only made me want you more.

“For a long time, the idea of marriage seemed foreign to me. I didn’t want to be with anyone but you. Yet asking you to marry me was a big deal. Once I proposed, I thought that would make everything right.

“But what I didn’t know was that with each new commitment, my heart aches. It’s hard to explain, but the more I have you, the more I want you. Telling you I love you, or asking you to marry me, only intensified the ach
e inside. I ache for you, baby.

“Then, when we got married, I thought I was really there. I’d made it. You are mine now. You are my wife.

“Yet I discovered it only made me want you more. Sex with you is hotter since we’ve been married than it ever was before. And believe me, it was always hot. That surprised me.

“And I’m afraid I didn’t deal with it that well.”

“What do you mean?” Natalie asked, so glad he was finally talking to her.

“I crave you so much it makes me crazy; crazy with love, and crazy with jealousy.”

“Why?” Natalie ran her fingertips over his jaw, hurting with love, aching with desire.

“This will sound crazy, but if I didn’t have you, I couldn’t lose you. Taking you as my wife was the best day of my life. Yet now, having experienced it, having been this close to you, I couldn’t live without you.

“My need to possess you is so fierce at times, I think I’m losing my mind. I crave you, baby, so badly it hurts. I can’t let anything take you from me.”

Tanner leaned over and kissed her, a deep kiss filled with emotion and need. His honesty touched her. Natalie understood because she felt the same about him. She may not
react the same, but the depth of her desire for him frightened her sometimes too. Their union was so strong, so deep that if anything ripped them apart it would destroy them. Their hearts would never survive.

“It’s a risk, Tanner. I know that,” she said. “Trust me. I love you, more than I can say. Nothing will come between us.”

Tanner kissed her again, more fiercely this time.

“But will you do something for me?”

Tanner looked at her, his blue eyes dark with emotion. “Anything.”

“From now on, share everything with me. You could have told me you knew about my father. You can tell me. That’s what marriage is. We don’t have to keep things from each other.

“And if you want to know what I’m doing, who I’m with, just ask me. I don’t have secrets from you.”

Tanner held her tight. “I will. I promise.”

Nothing else needed to be said. They understood each other. Tanner lifted her out of the water and dried her with a fluffy towel. In the patio lights, she saw his need for her and felt his touch, wanting him. He wrapped a soft robe around her and lifted her in his arms. “Mind if I carry you over the threshold again, baby?”

“I wish you would, because I can’t wait to get you into bed.”

“That’s where we’re going,” Tanner said, and kissed her deeply, pressing his warm lips to hers. The thrill of being his wife was nearly more than she could bear. Natalie wanted nothing more, and it meant so much that her husband loved her so deeply. There seemed to be no limit to the love they felt for each other, and she didn’t think there ever would be.
