“Everyone leaves,” Paul whispered into the darkness, likely remembering Eve. “I think forever’s a myth.”

“It’s not.” Danny stroked his hair, feeling tears sting his eyes. “I promise.”

“Okay,” Paul whispered, making it obvious he believed Danny as the last of the tension left his body.

Danny listened to Paul’s breathing fall into the steady rhythm of deep sleep. When he was certain he wouldn’t awaken, he slowly got up, taking care to put one of the couch pillows under Paul’s head.

Even though he was silent, Paul still reached out to Danny, his voice sounding more asleep than awake, “Don’t leave.”

“I’m just making a call,” Danny whispered, cupping Paul’s face, letting his thumb brush over his cheek. “I’ll be right back.”

“Okay,” Paul agreed with the same innocent trust.

Danny fanned his thumb over his cheek until he was certain Paul was asleep then fought to find his cell phone in the darkness. When he did locate it, he opened it, using the light as guidance to make his way to the front door. He walked outside, the cool air hitting him in the face as he stared at the night sky once more.

Having forgotten about his wallet, he found it still lying on the deck. He sat on the rotting wood, still using his cell phone as light to search through it until he pulled out a business card, thinking he needed to just program the number into his phone. He dialed and lit a cigarette as he listened to the phone ring several times.

The call was finally answered with a curt, “What’s wrong?”

“Were you sleeping?”

“Yes.” There was a pause and a rustling of sheets, making it obvious Jason sat up in bed before he barked, “Jesus, it’s three in the morning!”

Danny winced, blowing out the smoke shakily. “I’m sorry.”

“What is it, Danny?” Jason pressed, his voice still gravelly with sleep. “Do I need to come over? What’d you do?”

“I just—” Danny started, searching for the right words. “I was wondering if the offer to introduce me to that Domme was still open?”

“Yeah,” Jason said, his surprise obvious. “Of course, yes. I’ll happily introduce you to her.”

“Thank you,” Danny whispered, tears rolling down his cheeks. He’d been terrified his pride had once again done something that would hurt Paul, who needed Danny to get himself together whether he knew it or not. “Really, thank you, Jason.”

Something in that broke him. He brought his knees up, leaning his forehead against them as he bit his lip to keep from sobbing in gratitude. Not that he cared. Pride didn’t really matter when he considered what he was surrendering it for.

For Paul, Danny was able to do something he thought was impossible.

He asked for help.

About the Author

A freckle-faced redhead born and raised in Hawaii, Kele Moon has always been a bit of a sore thumb and has come to enjoy the novelty of it. She thrives on pushing the envelope and finding ways to make the impossible work in her story telling. With a mad passion for romance, she adores the art of falling in love. The only rules she believes in is that, in love, there are no rules and true love knows no bounds.

So obsessed is she with the beauty of romance and the novelty of creating it, she’s lost in her own wonder world most of the time. Thankfully she married her own dark, handsome, brooding hero who has infinite patience for her airy ways and attempts to keep her grounded. When she leaves her keys in the refrigerator or her cell phone in the oven, he’s usually there to save her from herself. The two of them now reside in Florida with their three beautiful children, who make their lives both fun and challenging in equal parts—they wouldn’t have it any other way.
