Flutter (The Discover Series) (21 page)

“Come on Sara, we have to go.” He was tugging on me again, but I stood my ground despite the pain.

“Are you insane?!” I yelled. “We can’t leave him! He just saved our lives
again,
and you want to leave him here?! He’s hurt!”

I was angry, and practically screaming; but he ignored me, and continued to drag me away despite my protests.

“Andres please,” I pleaded with him because I couldn’t fight against his hold. “Please, we can’t leave him. He’s hurt! That wolf could kill him.” I was sobbing at this point, and my hands gripped the front of his shirt tightly. “Please Andres; please don’t make me leave him.”

He wouldn’t look at me. He grabbed my hands gently, untangling my fingers from his shirt, and pulled me away despite my pleas.

“We have to go Sara. It’s not safe here.”

As he dragged me away I strained in between our bodies, to look back at My Wolf. He was staring at me, but quickly turned away. Tears were streaming down my face; I felt like I was being torn in two, and there was nothing I could do about it.

We managed to reach the shed in what seemed like no time at all, and that only added to my anger. Andres pushed opened the door to the shed and helped me limp inside. My arm had been wrapped securely around his waist. I pulled my hand from around him swiftly, not wanting to touch or be touched by him any longer, and maneuvered myself onto the cot. He hesitated as he pulled his arm from around me, but got the message and moved to the other cot. He sat down, and I could feel his eyes on me. I continued to stare into the fire that was still raging with life.

“Sara,” he started gently, and I closed my eyes, wishing I could close off my ears too.

Being surrounded by the dark again only made me feel worse, the vision of My Wolf lying there, limp, and hurt, was branded on the backs of my eyelids. I could feel the silver tear drops as they slid down my cheeks.

“We couldn’t stay there, it wasn’t safe-“

“Don’t,” I said harshly, denying his words with swift shakes of my head. When I opened my eyes, they were narrowed at him accusingly. “We could have at least
tried
to help him!! You wouldn’t even try!! He went back for you, and you wouldn’t even try!” My face scrunched in pain and I sucked in a deep breath.

I heard him rush to me, kneeling in front of me, but careful not to touch me, which was a smart move on his part

“Are you okay?” He asked softly.

“No I’m not okay.” I gritted the words through my teeth. “I would have died! I
was
dying, but…but he saved me.” The last part of my sentence ended softly. “We shouldn’t have left him.” I hit my fist into my thigh angrily.

“Sara, there wasn’t anything we could have done-“

“We could have tried!! You wouldn’t even try!!” I repeated.

“He can take care of himself Sara. You don’t understand-” he stopped, and looked away.

I tried to make eye contact
again, but he stood and faced the fire. I looked around his body, but he still wouldn’t look at me.

“I don’t understand what?” I asked. “What don’t I understand?”

“Nothing,” he said, dismissing my question and turning fully away from me.

“What are you not telling me Andres?” I demanded. “None of this makes sense, and none of what happened to me tonight should be possible.” I waited, but he didn’t say anything. “Those wolves,” I stopped, not knowing what to say. “Those wolves Andres, they weren’t like regular wolves. They could,” I paused, thinking about the things they had put me through. “They could do things that wolves should not be able to do.”

I looked at him, waiting for him to react, but he kept his back to me and didn’t say anything.

“Sara,” he finally said. “You’re tired. You’ve been through a lot tonight.”

That’s
your reasoning?! I’ve been through a lot?!” I stood up and grunted. That caused him to turn toward me.

“You need to lie down Sara.”

I ignored him. “
That’s
how you’re going to explain tonight? You’re going to tell me I’m tired and I imagined it at? I imagined being squeezed to death, when nothing I could see was touching me? I imagined walking in circles over and over again? Don’t give me that crap Andres! There is no way I imagined everything that happened to me tonight.”

I was breathing hard, waiting for him to argue with me, but he didn’t. He didn’t say anything so I continued.

“Where did you go?” I accused.

He looked at me shocked. “What?”

“Where were you when I woke up?”

“I went to search for help.” He looked uncomfortable.

“Did you find any?”

“I found a car.”

“Who’s car.”

“I don’t know. There was no one around.”

“So you just found a car sitting there, belonging to no one? Don’t you think that’s kind of strange?” I accused. “What are you not telling me Andres?”

“I’m sure it belonged to someone Sara, probably the same someone who owns this shed. I merely said there was no one around it.”

I searched his eyes, looking for something, but I didn't know what I was looking for. I slumped in defeat, and sat back down on the cot slowly.

“When are we leaving?”

“Now.”

“What about him? Can’t we go back to make sure he is okay?”

“We don’t have time, we have to get you to a doctor Sara. I’m pretty sure you have a couple of ribs broken, and your face… your eye looks really bad. Is it painful?”

I touched my left eye, realizing I still couldn’t see clearly out of it. It was nearly swollen shut, and tender to my touch.

“No.” I whispered.

“We need to have someone look at you right away to make sure nothing else is wrong.”

“I need to rest for just few minutes please.” I was too tired to fight with him anymore.

“Of course, lie down and we’ll leave in fifteen minutes.” He was saying.

I stopped listening to him before he finished his sentence, lying back, and curling onto my side. My wolf’s eyes haunted my last few minutes of consciousness, before I fell into a dreamless sleep.

I
watched as
the darkness swallowed Andres’ and Sara’s figures.

I was experiencing an entirely new level of pain, watching Sara walk away with tears in her eyes. I knew that it would be the last time I would see her, and I hated the guilt she would feel at having to leave me like this. She thought she was leaving me to my death, not realizing she had saved us both.

She had saved my life this time.

Seeing her use her powers was an exhilarating high for me, and I hated that she didn’t even know what she was capable of. She was amazing, and she didn’t even realize what she had done. The further she got away, the more I was being tugged in her direction. My body was protesting the distance, urging me to follow her.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen.

The low snickering behind me, reminded me of what still needed to be done. I turned toward the wolf; he was making feeble attempts to get up, only to be brought back down by the pain.

Ouch, I guess what they say is true: never mess with a women’s man right Adan?
He joked, and his laugh echoed inside of my head.

My only answer was a deadly snarl in his direction. Which only caused him to laugh harder.

I kid. I kid man. Lighten up a little. I’ll tell you one thing buddy; your little girlfriend has one hell of an arm on her. He rolled his shoulder, and it popped making him wince in pain. Did my ears deceive me or did I hear you right? She doesn’t realize she has magical powers?

He was taunting me, and although I wanted to rip him apart, I managed to control myself.

Haha. That a boy, great show of restraint amigo. Your father would be so proud of you.

I continued to ignore him, and slowly walked toward him.

Are you going to do the deadly predator act on me now? Karma really is a bitch. Well in my case karma comes in the form of a bitch boy. You should have seen your little girlfriend’s face when I did this same song and dance routine with her. She was absolutely terrified, she started running. I don’t know which was funnier;
terrorizing her
or watching her run in circles, before she finally realized she wasn’t going anywhere. She played the part of the mouse to perfection, and I wasn’t too shabby as the cat either.

My lips pulled back, and my teeth gleamed in the moonlight. Whether he’d ever admit it or not, I saw him swallow hard.

Not
, he said.
Come on Adan, out of all the years I have known you, you’ve never seemed the type to be smitten over some girl, especially one that could technically be considered an insect, royalty or not.

Out of all the years I have known you Mateo, I never considered you the type to be a traitor.

He flinched slightly at my accusation.

Come on, now really Adan? You never expected ME to flip over to the dark side?
His laugh was as equally dark, and I had to admit the joke was on me.

You were supposed to be my friend.

Awww tear. Let’s face facts Adan; I was your shadow, but not anymore. For once I’m top dog.

You betrayed your clan to become top dog?! Your ego is that big?!

You still don’t get it do you? It’s not only for the status or my ego. Can you imagine the power we will have when they’re done with your precious little princess?
He spat the words at me.

They will never touch her, and after tonight you won’t have anything.

Uh-oh, listen to the big bad wolf making threats.

You’re starting to bore me Mateo.
I drawled out lazily and limped toward him.

Sorry about that man, how is the leg feeling?

Better then you’re going to be feeling.

You’re getting good with them threats your majesty. I nearly quivered that time. You know, it’s too bad I’m not going to be around to see that little insect squirm, I’m sure that would have been a sight.

I’m done playing nice Mateo,
I said, and pushed my weight into his dislocated shoulder. His whine came out through his gritted teeth, and he snarled in my direction.

If you kill me now, you’ll never know why they want her, or what they plan to do to her, and yourself there Prince Adan.

I let up on his shoulder and his breath hissed out in relief.

You better make this quick & very interesting Mateo.

You really don’t know do you?
He sounded genuinely surprised.

I frowned at him,
know what?

You know what; actually I’m going to keep it a secret, but man if I’m not going to miss the shock on your face when you learn the truth.
He was actually chuckling.

The truth about what?
I insisted, pushing on his shoulder again.

Oh you’ll know soon enough. Word has already been sent that the Prince and Princess have been found.
He sneered
. There is a bigger picture here Adan and you haven’t seen the half of it yet.

I think were done here.

He stared into my eyes until I pushed his head back, exposing his throat to my waiting fangs. I wanted to make it slow and painful, but I wasn’t a natural born killer, and it was good enough that he would be dead. I sank my teeth deeply into his throat, and his body squirmed under my mouth. Pushing deep until I hit the artery
, I
felt
the warm, bitter
,
taste of his blood
fill my mouth
and his body went limp under my deadly grip. My jaw locked, and I could feel my venom pouring into his body, killing off his vital organs. I continued to gnaw at his throat until all his blood was drained.

Pulling away I looked down at his lifeless body, at someone who I had thought was my friend. The skin around his face was sunken in, and pale without blood coursing through his veins. It made my stomach churn, and I turned away from his human body. I still had a slight limp, but my body was starting to heal on its own, and I was able to put a little more pressure on it. When I reached the body of the other wolf, I repeated the process until he lay there too, the
life
gone from his body.

Turning away from the gruesome scene, I walked away from the lifeless bodies.

Adan

“How is she?”

I jogged past Andres and into the shed not waiting for his reply. Sara laid there on the cot sleeping. It wasn’t the peaceful, relaxing, kind of sleep. Kneeling down next her, I watched her, a small crease worrying the shape of her forehead. Frowning, I brushed my thumb over her soft skin, enjoying the runaway sigh that slipped past her lips.
She
shifted toward my touch and I could feel some of the strain, uncoiling from her body. The flutter flared, igniting a series of sparks. Pleasure raced wildly through my body at her reaction and I felt inebriated. I inhaled deeply suppressing a groan as her sent filled my senses.
