For I Could Lift My Finger and Black Out the Sun (37 page)

Without warning, our speed waned, like we were suddenly falling through water, not air. We slowed, being guided by an invisible hand toward the ground.

And at last, the wheels of the chair settled into the sand, on the same spot we’d left an infinite time before. We touched down so gently, I barely felt it, didn’t even hear a sound.

Exhausted, I collapsed on the sand at Holly’s feet, then looked up to see if she was still alive.

Holly was staring back at me. Her mouth quivered again, and for a moment I thought she would trigger another earthquake.

Then I heard the sound.

Holly was trying to speak.

It was low and muffled, from a tongue and lips years out of practice.

Eyes locked on mine, she said only a single word.

“Johnny.”
