His
worst fear was proven by the scream. The weres had turned and
retaliated against them. At least one of his friends was dead, and
the other two were who knows where. Jason decided it was time to run.
As silently as he could, he lifted himself from the crouch he’d
been in and turned.

Alice
stared at him, her head cocked to one side. Their eyes locked, and
Jason could see the intelligence in the eyes, and the knowledge of
his death. He swung his rifle up to shoot at her, but a werewolf he
hadn’t seen move behind him knocked it out of his grasp. He
looked from the werebear to the werewolf, and said goodbye to the
world.

*****

John
and Riley tracked the fourth shooter. They’d heard the death
throes of three of the men, so only one was left. He’d hidden
his tracks well, like a person who knew he’d be tracked.
However, John and Riley both possessed a sense of smell unrivaled by
any other species in the world. They looked at each other in
confusion. The smell of this poacher led them back to the camp.

They
turned quickly and retreated to the camp, eyes open. They could smell
nothing here; the scent of fresh blood from the injured and dead was
overpowering. Riley looked at John and snorted. John looked at him,
and Riley lifted his head to indicate a tent. John lifted his muzzle
and smelled the air; the distinct odor of human drifted up his
nostrils, making him sneeze. Riley grinned a bear grin and John
returned his wolf one.

They
silently moved to the tent. They locked eyes briefly, then pushed
through the tent flap. It was empty.

*****

Bud
had left the tent. He’d seen the wolf and bear shadows and knew
they were closing in. He didn’t want those two. He wanted the
original two, the two that had started all this trouble. All of his
men were dead, of that he was sure. And he knew he wouldn’t
make it out alive.
But
that damn werebear bitch would go down with him.

He
circled around again. He’d heard Jason’s screams, so he
moved in that direction first, his rifle at the ready, his eyes
alert.
I’ll kill them both if I can
,
he thought.

Bud
heard them moving close by. He moved towards the sound, moving low.
He watched them as they shifted into humans and begin whispering
about where the fourth guy could be. Right here, he thought.

Near
their feet, he saw the mangled body of Jason and gagged slightly.
That bitch had ripped one of his arms off in her anger. Bud was glad
he was downwind from the pair so they couldn’t smell him, but
he could smell Jason’s blood and gagged again. His anger rose
with his bile.

He
stepped into the clearing.

*****

Alice
and Alex had shifted and hugged each other tightly. He asked her,
“Are you ok?”

“I
will be. But not yet. We have to find the third guy,” Alice
said, trying hard to think about the task at hand, not the loss of
her mother.

“We’ve
got three of them so far,” Alex commented. “Let’s
head back to camp and see what happened with everybody else.”

“Ok,”
she murmured.

“Stop
moving,” Bud commanded. “Put your hands up. And if either
of you try to shift, I’ll shoot you in the kneecap.”

Alice
and Alex lifted their hands and looked at each other. A little bit of
mind reading would have helped, but only the fairies could do that.

“What
are you going to do now?” Alex asked. “Our families are
twenty yards away. They’ll hear if you kill us. You won’t
make it out alive.”

“I
don’t really intend to. This were-bitch started all this. So
I’m going to kill her and finish it,” Bud claimed. He
aimed his gun at Alice, and Alex stepped in front of her.

“Alex,
step aside,” Alice told him. “You can kill him as soon as
he’s shot me.”

“Listen
to the lady, Alex,” Bud laughed. “She’s putting you
first.”

Alex
looked at Alice, smiled, and stepped aside. Alice dropped to the
ground, and John leapt over her, colliding with Bud. His gun went
off, uselessly blowing a tree to bits. He lay on the ground, staring
up at the muzzle of the werewolf. Riley stepped into the clearing in
his human form and cleared his throat. John looked up and smiled his
wolf smile, then licked Bud’s face and moved away from him. Bud
wet his pants.

“Hello,
poacher.” Riley’s voice was frighteningly calm. He
sniffed the air. “A little scared?”

Bud
sat up. He was unashamed of his fear. “Yes, I am afraid. I
killed some of your kind, you killed some of mine. And now you’re
going to kill me.”

“You
are correct, sir,” Riley confirmed. Riley looked at John, who
had waited patiently beside the poacher. John growled and hovered
over Bud once more.

Riley
turned to Alex and Alice. “Let’s leave John to his
business, shall we?” He gestured them away, and as they walked
to the camp, they heard Bud’s screams and the sounds of ripping
flesh.

Alice
helped Alex back to camp, with Riley following. As they stepped into
the clearing, the smell of blood hit their noses. Alice looked
around, at the bodies lined up in a row, both werebear and werewolf,
and she felt her chest constrict and tears fill her eyes.
Mom
,
she thought. She looked for Susan and saw her sitting against a
table, still in bear form, but fine other than the earlier wound.

Shara
ran up to them and threw her arms around Alex. “Where’s
John? Is he ok?”

“I’m
here, Shara,” John called behind them, wiping blood off his
face.

“What
happened?” she asked, holding his hand and wiping his face as
well.

“I
killed the last one,” John said. “What about the other
ones?”

“All
dead,” Shara reported.

“How
many casualties?” Alice asked.

“Three
bears, two wolves dead, several on both sides injured,” Shara
said, looking at the line of bodies.

“Does
that include my mother?” Riley asked quietly.

“Yes.”

“Did
my sister see?”

Shara nodded

Alice
hugged Riley, and together they walked to Susan to comfort her. They
sat with her, and the trio cried together. Several families were
doing the same. Five lost. Shara watched the people around her as
they cried, and her heart broke. Her family had lived, and she was
grateful, but she hurt so much for the others.

Shara
turned to John. “We have to make a truce with the werebear
clan, John. This could have been prevented.”

“How’s
that, Shara? The poachers followed the trail left by our son rescuing
Alice. They could have followed any one of us and taken us by
surprise.”

“If
there are more of us, and we share a camp, we’d have better
security,” Alex added. “There is a way to prevent further
death.”

John
didn’t respond. He had nothing to say. He walked away from his
little family to comfort his people.

Shara
and Alex walked to Riley, Alice, and Susan. Shara knelt and touched
Susan’s injury. “I can bind that for you.”

Susan
looked at Alice and Riley, who both nodded. Alice rose and said,
“Please let me help you with the injured. We can move them to
the eating area like you suggested earlier.”

Shara
nodded her thanks and rose to issue orders to those able to move the
injured to the eating area. Alice looked at Alex and touched his
wound. “Let’s get you to the eating area.”

“You
can stay with your family, Alice,” Alex told her. He could see
the pain in her eyes, and it hurt him. “I can get over there.”

Riley
stopped him with a hand on his arm. “I saw you step in front of
my sister. It was brave and foolish, but thank you.”

Alex
shrugged. “I love her.”

Riley
nodded. “I know.”

The
men smiled at each other, and Alice smiled too. Maybe a truce could
happen after all.

*****

Later
that night, after the werebear clan and the werewolf pack had eaten
together, decisions were made regarding the dead. Cammie and the
werebears would be taken to the werebear cemetery, while the
werewolves cremated their dead. Shara asked the werebear clan to
attend the memorial for the werewolves, and Riley invited the
werewolf pack to join them in honoring his mother and the other
werebears who had given their lives.

An
easy comradery had appeared between the clan and the pack, and Alice
was grateful. She’d pulled Riley aside after dinner as the
werebears were preparing to leave, and told him she wanted to stay
with Alex tonight. He stared at her.

“Alice,
are you sure that’s smart?”

“Riley,
I love him. I know we can make this work,” Alice insisted.
“Look around. The feud may be ending.”

Riley
did look around. Werebears were hugging werewolves who had saved them
and vice versa. People were smiling and making jokes while saying
their goodbyes. Even John was among them, shaking hands and making
small talk while Shara checked and rechecked bandages on the
werebears. Luckily, the injuries had been somewhat minor, most of
them having happened during the werebear/werewolf fight rather than
gunshot wounds. Only Susan was unable to shift.

He
looked back at his sister and nodded. “You’re right. Stay
if you want to. I can see that he loves you. Maybe your relationship
with him will help end the feud.”

“I
think so,” Alice said. She hugged Riley and then talked to
Susan briefly, explaining her decision. Susan smiled and nudged her,
wiggling her bear eyebrows. Alice laughed and nudged her back gently.
Riley joined them and promised to walk with Susan the whole time.

As
the werebears left the clearing, Alex joined Alice and took her hand.
She leaned into him. He looked at her, then at the departing bears.

“Aren’t
you going home?” Alex asked, confused.

“I
wanted to stay with you. I hope that’s ok?” Alice
replied, smiling. “Your mom said I could.”

“Oh,
well, as long as Mom said it was ok,” he teased her. They
giggle a little and turned to walk to his tent. They called their
good nights to his family.

John
watched them go. “Shara, I still don’t like the idea of
the two of them together. What if they have children? What will they
be?”

Shara
shook her head at his words. “John, they’ve only just
started this little romance. Children are far, far away. Let them be
young and enjoy themselves.” She pulled him away to their own
tent. “C’mon, let’s go have some fun ourselves.”

In
Alex’s tent, Alice wrapped her arms around Alex’s neck,
careful not to hurt him, and kissed him tenderly on the lips. “I’m
glad you wanted me to stay as much as I wanted to stay.”

“I
think I might always want you to stay,” he replied. She smiled
at him, loving the idea of waking up with him every morning.

“I’ll
be here as long as you want me,” Alice told him. They kissed
again, then she jerked away with a gasp, her hand covering her mouth.
“Oh my gosh! We are so Romeo and Juliet!”

“Yes,
but instead of death ending our story, we’ll end it with some
lovin’!”

Alice laughed when he slapped her ass playfully. “Hey
now, calm it down! You’re injured. Can you?”

Baby, with you, I can do anything!”

They laughed together as they fell onto the bed. He ran
his hands up and down her body, thrilling at the instance response
from her. She moaned her pleasure into his mouth, grabbing his cock
and he ran his fingers over her clit, eliciting even louder moans.

When he raised up to kiss her, looking into her eyes as
he did, she knew her place was beside him, no matter the
consequences. She wrapped her legs around his waist and held him to
her, wanting his body against hers. Their kiss went from loving to
passionate to frantic quickly. They had to have each other, and now.

Alice murmured in his ear, “Take me, Alex. Make me
yours.”

Alex looked at her, fell into her eyes, and kissed her
again. He moved his hand down her body, his mouth following. When he
reached her apex, she sucked in a breath in anticipation. He looked
up at her, and her eyes pleaded with him to make love to her with his
mouth. He smiled sexily, and flicked his tongue across her clit. She
jerked in pleasure and put her hands on his head to encourage him.

He sucked her clit until she writhed beneath her, and he
inserted two fingers to increase her pleasure. She bucked her hips to
give him easier access to her inner self, and he increased his rhythm
to rabid pace. He wanted to hear her pleasure when she came. He felt
her inner walls contract as her orgasm crashed around her. She tried
to put her hand over her mouth to stifle the cry, but he pulled it
off with his free hand. Her cry of ecstasy only added to his
pleasure.

Alice pulled him back up and kissed him, rolling him
over on his back. He’d been on top last time; now she wanted a
little taste of the top. She ran her hands up and down his chest,
loving the feel of his muscles. She leaned down and gently kissed the
bandages that covered his wound. He smiled at her tenderness, and
gasped when she straddled him, her pussy just above his cock. He
waited with baited breath for her to lower herself on him, but she
only teased, rubbing herself over him so that her wetness covered
him. She smiled seductively at him as she leaned over to kiss him.
