Friggin Zombies (23 page)

For the rest of the day the remaining newsies were alternately livid about what was happening, disgruntled that it hadn't happened sooner, or tickled shitless over the whole thing and cheering the soldiers on as they cleared area after area of the undead.

Connie and I watched from the house, me taking an occasional stroll around the property checking the fence and what have you and Connie pouring over the internet for anything we could use information wise.

Turned out Connie had done a lot of infectious work when she was with Doctors Without Borders. Not her specialty, as she was what she called a 'general internist (I still don't know what that means). As my grandfather had put it once, 'she can't play the tune but she can dance to it'. She knew enough to get by, and maybe to be helpful if there ever came a time when there was a chance in hell of making headway against it.

But that time was not now. I admit it, there was some selfishness involved in my argument. I didn't want anything to happen to her. But there was another fact as well. When this was over,
if
it was over, then doctors might well be in short supply. And they would be sorely needed if the chance to rebuild presented itself. Our own experience in a small town hospital was enough to show me that medical personnel had likely suffered disproportionate casualties as they saw infected in the emergency rooms across the country. Across the world for that matter.

If things ever 'straightened out', so to speak, then she would be needed like never before. She and every other doctor left alive, along with every nurse, every medical specialist, every paramedic, police officer, firefighter, engineer, you name the profession and it was probably going to play a huge part in our being able to rebuild our world and start over.

But we had to survive first.

*****

And so here we sit. It's been five days since our trip home from the hospital. Of course we've found holes in our preps since then. Bound to happen, but it's still annoying. We could take a chance on going to find what we need but we can see from the net cams in town that the zombie issue is alive and well in our little slice of heaven.

I've killed two 'walkers', as people have taken to calling them, when they approached the fence. I didn't know them, for which I am grateful. I'm going to have to get rid of them I guess but I'm reluctant to go outside. I saw a coyote tearing at one late yesterday and wondered idly if the coyote could be zombiefied. Would that not be some shit right there?

An undead coyote. Of course that would mean we might see undead bears, wolves, mountain lions .  . . an image of an undead, zombified Bigfoot just popped into my head. Did not need that. Just did not need it.

So we're settled in trying to wait for the end of the world, or at least to the end of the Zombies. No idea which will come first, though I'm fairly certain that zombies everywhere will count toward the end of the world. It should, anyway. I'm positive that if I see a zombie Bigfoot that we're doomed. Just doomed.

We're set pretty well except for water and there's been rain all day today so the water situation should be okay for a while. We're set for food of course and most everything else we can think of. Phone service has become spotty but it's still working in fits and starts.

Three of five local television stations are still on the air. Fox and CNN are still there but MSNBC folded yesterday, citing the 'danger to their employees' as the reason they closed down. Fox and CNN faced the same threats but over a dozen of their people at each HQ volunteered to stay there and on the air as long as they could. Brave folks like I said before.

Stupid
. But brave. They aren't getting much new information really. Mostly they're mapping out places they have lost contact with. There's a lot of them. The little 'new' news is from people like Colonel Guy as he and his men fight to clear at least some safe zone and keep it that way. His projected safe zone is about two hundred miles from us, give or take. I admit I've been studying a map of the area between here and where he is. You know, just for reference.

Live cams that are still streaming over the net let us see zombies showing up all over now. Doesn't seem possible that all this happened so fast but. . .well, there it is. Now it's a race to see if adopting the 'eradicate' policy will still work, considering the ZA was already well and truly underway before they started trying to do that. All we can do is hunker down and wait it out. Wait to see if Colonel Guy can make his 'safe zone' happen. Wait and see if he and his men and the few others that have adopted the same policy can prevail or not. There's no 'Guy' in our area, hence the map study.

Just in case.

Hardly seems like it's only be a few days since I saw that video on the net. Lot has happened since then. Managed to get most everything I could need to have in order to survive, assuming we can keep disaster to a minimum and it rains regular. Even got the girl. And ain't that some shit right there?

Finally get my dream girl and BOOM. . .zombies. Or maybe it was zombies and THEN I got the girl. I'm gonna have to get back to ya on that one. Either way though, who'd of thought it? Friggin' zombies, man.

Go figure.
