Reaper & Harmony’s First Christmas

Part One

“T
oday has been such a long day,” Hannah Thompson sighed dramatically as she and her husband Garrett collapsed on the couch in their living room. Her back ached, her feet ached, and her cheeks hurt from smiling so much.

Things were always a whirlwind with the two of them, and their first Christmas had been no different. Just like Thanksgiving, they’d decided to stay in Nashville. He’d learned that Christmas Eve at her parents house, was loud and rambunctious. All of her extended relatives had been there, and it was an experience to say the least. They’d Skyped with his family earlier in the night and even though this was one of the only Christmas’ he hadn’t been with his parents and sister, he was still having a great time.

“I know,” he scooted over so that he could put an arm around her shoulder and snuggle in close. “We’re used to being lazy fucks, and today we actually had to get up and do something.”

She giggled. That was the truth. Since their combined hiatus, neither one of them had gotten up to an alarm clock most days and some days, she didn’t even get out of yoga pants. Today she’d gotten dressed, done her hair, and her make up. The laziness was about to come to an end, though. Black Friday would be playing Bridgestone on December 31
st
to kick off their tour and she would be following along, wherever they went. It was the most excited she’d been about traveling in years. “It’s exhausting, but we better get used to it. In a few days, we’ll be back to the grind.”

He leaned in, kissing her forehead. “Yeah, but at least I’ll have you with me, it will make things way more bearable than they ever have been,” he ran his hand down her arm, clasping their fingers together. “Have you looked at the schedule? It’s kinda brutal.”

“Nah,” she grinned up at him. “As long as I’m with you, and I have no commitments, I’m great.” The words she spoke were the truth. Being with him was her number one priority and why she’d worked so hard the past few months. Before him, she had never given much thought to being anyone other than a performer, but now, she wore the title of wife like a badge of honor.

He situated himself on the couch and pulled her back to rest against his chest. It was quiet in the room, and they could hear Havock’s dog tags jiggling as he got himself comfortable. They had a fire going in the fireplace (something Garrett thought they’d never do) because miracle of miracles, it was snowing. There was less than an inch on the ground, but it was coming down at a decently rapid rate.

“I don’t know about you, but I’m glad we got back to the house in one piece, you weren’t kidding when you said snow shuts this place down.” Growing up in Southern California, he’d never had much in the way of snow as a kid or teenager. As his band had grown more successful they had been in places where they had been able to experience the change of seasons, but this was much different.

She laughed loudly as he held her closer to him. “No, I wasn’t. I’m glad you got to experience the craziness, even if it’s only for one night, because it’ll probably be gone by tomorrow afternoon. I told you it was crazy.”

“I’m glad I got to throw a snowball at you then.”

She pinched his side as he situated them so that they lay on their sides, together on the couch. Resting her head against his chest, she listened to the steady thump of his heart. Hannah felt the soft scrap of the beard he sported on her forehead as he made himself comfortable. From experience, she knew that he wouldn’t keep it long, but it was one of the things she loved about being his wife. These moments were hers alone and she wouldn’t give that up for anything.

They lay there for a long time, both drifting off, warm as the fire blazed at his back. At some point, he reached to the back of the couch and pulled the afghan around the two of them.

“We should probably go get in bed,” Hannah whispered, her voice thick with sleep.

Exhausted from the day they’d had, he shook his head, and rubbed his hands up the back of her t-shirt. “Nah, babe, we’re fine where we are.” He threw his leg over hers, pinning them to the couch.

Burrowing deeper into the blanket, she relaxed and let sleep claim her again. She couldn’t think of any better way to spend her first Christmas Eve with the most important person in her world.

“C’mon boy,” Garrett whispered to Havock the next morning as he disentangled himself from Hannah.

Havock had been pawing at him for almost an hour and he’d been reluctant to leave the warmth of the couch, but he knew at some point Havock would no longer be nice, and he’d christen his new home. Walking through the living room and into the kitchen, he opened the back door, blinking hard at the brightness of the light bouncing off the snow.

“Go on,” he pushed Havock towards the open door. The problem was that Havock was a California dog, as much as he was a California guy. He whined, laying down on the tile, putting his paws over his head.

“I’m sorry,” Garrett told him. “But I’m not God, I can’t make it warm. Go do your business and come back in, you’ll be good dude,” he told him, patting him on the head. He whined again, causing Garrett to sigh and lean down. “Go, you gotta go,” he tugged on the dog collar slightly, pulling Havock out the door and then shut the door in his face.

“Sorry,” he apologized when Havock barked his unhappiness. Looking out the glass of the back door, he pointed at the dog. “Go, I’ll be back in a few minutes.” When he turned around, he almost screamed. Hannah stood in the kitchen, the blanket wrapped tightly around her, trying to suppress a laugh.

“You talk to him like he’s your child.”

“He is,” Garrett shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve had him a long time and for most of that time, he was kinda my one companion who’d never leave me. We’ve always talk to one another.”

She walked over, holding the blanket open to him, sighing when he enveloped her in his arms. “He’s gonna be mad at you.”

“As much as he’d like to believe he’s human, he can’t go to the bathroom in the floor in here. He’s still gotta do his business outside.”

“You’re cute when you’re trying to talk strong to our dog.”

There was a bark at the back door and they broke apart so that Garrett could go let him in.

“He’s got snow on him, let me go get him a towel,” Hannah said, right before Havock looked up at Garrett and shook everything he had off, and onto his master.

“Nah, I think he’s got it,” Garrett wiped his face, chuckling. “Smart ass.” When he’d wiped off all the moisture, Hannah stood there, silly grin on her face, her eyes bright. “What?”

“Merry Christmas,” she bounced over to where he was and wrapped him tightly in her arms. “It’s our first Christmas together, as a married couple, and in our new house. We did the trifecta!”

Her enthusiasm rubbed off on him and for the first time in many years, he was excited about Christmas morning.

“How do you wanna do presents?” she asked, the excitement reverberating off her.

“Presents?” he played dumb. “I was supposed to get you something? I thought the engagement ring, wedding ring, and new house had me covered.”

Rockin’ Country Christmas

Part Two

T
he look she threw at him, told him without words that she did not agree with anything he had just said.

“Are you jokin’?”

He snorted. “Do I look like I wanna go without sex for six months? Yes, I was kidding,” he cupped her neck with his hand and brought her forehead close so that he could drop a kiss there. “We can exchange gifts right now, if you want to.”

She did, want to exchange them, desperately. Hannah knew she had a present that Garrett would never buy himself and she couldn’t wait to see his face when he opened it. “Yes, let’s go now.”

In past relationships, it had always seemed like he was the one getting excited for things, keeping them together. With the two of them, she was the leader in most things and he the follower. He loved that – he loved that they were comfortable enough with one another that they could exchange the role whenever the needed to. It had always been the hallmark of a good relationship and now he had it. It was more than he could have ever thought possible when the year had begun in January.

He let her lead him to the living room and watched as she immediately went to the tree and began grabbing gifts out from underneath it, handing them to him.
