Green Card (7 page)

“Come for me, Katia. Come hard.”

She screamed, bucked and spasmed, pulsating against his penis. Violent waves and electric jolts ripped through him as he released his cum. He continued spurting into the condom, jerking and grunting until the very last aftershock.

When they stilled, she rolled off of him and collapsed at his side, panting. Mason drew her into his arms and nuzzled her salty neck.

She whispered, “I can’t imagine being happier.”

“We’ll have many happy moments like this, Katia. There’s plenty of time to explore our bodies and feelings—after Friday.”

The fateful day arrived, and Mason had stayed up almost all night to ready his presentation for the publisher from Medusa Comics. Now he was seated in front of the man, holding his breath while the publisher scrutinised each page.

When he reached the end, he smiled and leant back in his chair. “This shows promise. I like the character and storyline. The drawings are very well done. It shows you care about your product. But…”

Oh no. Here it comes. Rejection.

“Are you able to produce one of these every month?”

Stunned, Mason faltered for a moment. Then he quickly said, “Absolutely. I finished this in about a week.”

The gentleman raised his eyebrows and smiled, obviously impressed. “Good. Prepare a three-month lead. If your quality is consistent with this, we can talk about a longer contract and a monthly serial.”

Mason accepted the paperwork he was offered, shook the man’s hand and nearly floated out of his office. Katia had asked him to call right after the meeting to let her know how it had gone. When he’d asked her about receiving a personal call at work, she’d said not to worry. Her uncle was being nicer to her now that she wasn’t cluttering up his living room.

As soon as Mason reached the sidewalk, he pulled his cell phone from his jacket pocket and speed dialled the restaurant. How would he tell her? Act sad then come out with the happy truth? Nah. Not his style.

Her uncle’s gruff voice announced, “Demetri’s.”

“May I speak to Katia, please?”

“She’s busy. Who’s this?”

“Never mind. I’ll come over to see her.” Before Demetri could say a word to bring down his mood, he snapped the cell phone closed and strutted to the restaurant.

Katia glanced up from wiping the counter to see Mason standing in front of her, hands in his pockets and a foolish grin on his face.

“Mason! You look happy. Does that mean your appointment went well?”

“Come here,” he said.

Since she had been trying to look busy in the near empty restaurant, she dropped the wet rag and trotted around the counter. His expression said he had good news, and her hopes began to rise.

“I got the contract,” he said.

Katia squealed, threw her arms around his neck and kissed him soundly on the lips.

Of course, that brought her uncle to the serving window. “What’s going on?” he demanded.

Mason glanced up at the serving window and said, “I’m glad you’re here, sir. I have good news. Not only can I afford to support Katia now, but…” He dropped to one knee, took her hand and asked her to marry him.

Katia’s head spun, and she feared she might faint. Did she hear him correctly? Gawking at him, she asked, “What did you say?”

He chuckled. “I said, ‘I love you. Will you marry me?’ You can get your green card sooner rather than later—plus me. What a bonus.”

She dropped to her knees. Hot tears welled up, and she tried to speak but had to catch her breath first.

Remembering the way he had stressed the word ‘temporary’, she had to ask. “Are you sure? I thought you wanted to spend some time together.”

He cupped her face. “I don’t need any more time. I’m in love with you, Katia.”

She shifted her head to kiss him and tingles invaded her spine.

“Well, say yes, for heaven’s sake,” her uncle yelled.

She giggled and tears blurred her vision. Still, she could see the expectant look in the eyes of her handsome future husband. A hush fell over the restaurant.

“I’d love nothing more in this world than to be your wife.”

Demetri clapped loudly from the serving window, and the customers smiled and joined in.

Mason leant towards her lips, and she kissed him with all the passion in her heart. When they finally broke apart, Mason helped her to her feet. Uncle Demetri rounded the corner and shook Mason’s hand. He was smiling. Actually smiling! And to Katia’s pleasant shock, he kissed her on the cheek.

“Congratulations! Welcome to the family.” Uncle Demetri clapped him on the back.

Mason wrapped his arms around Katia and asked her patron, “When can I take her home?”

“Wait here. I’ll see if my wife can come down and take her place. You two have a wedding to plan.”

When he had disappeared into the kitchen to call his wife, Katia said, “You’ve made me beyond happy. I’m going to share my life with the man I love. And I—I have a
home.
Your home.”

“Our home. The home I’m happy to share with my voluptuous Totalitarian.”
