Through a blur of tears she smiled tremulously. ‘You already had my heart, Lucas. When I first saw you in London I was just as foolish as all the other women who fell prey to your charms. You know how I feel about you. It was impossible not to love you.’ He was looking at her with adoration in his eyes, and when she looked in the clear depths she wondered how eyes of such a pale brilliance could be so warm and loving.

‘And I love you wholeheartedly and without reserve,’ he told her, brushing away a lock of hair that had blown across her cheek. He smiled lazily, tenderly. ‘When Caroline has left for London we are going to live and be happy. We have so much lost time to make up for.’

Laura raised her hand and brushed her fingertip against his warm, sensual lips and traced the curve of his firm jaw, aware of the desire kindling in his eyes and her own sparking to life within her. She smiled, anticipating and wanting the kiss she knew he was going to give her—and he did, capturing her lips in a devouring kiss that sent her spinning off into a warm, sweet world, where nothing and no one existed but themselves.

During the days, weeks and months that followed, never had Laura believed she could be so happy. In her husband’s arms she was consumed by a love stronger and fiercer than anything she had ever known, all the sweeter for now there was nothing between them—no secrets, no doubts, only a new, deeper understanding, trust and love.
