a proposal wasn’t it?”
His eyes glittered, and he still didn’t smile which worried her.
“Yes, it was a proposal…but there are strings you should know about before you make your decision.”
“What’s that?” she whispered, not wanting to hear him say he’d changed his mind about going back to what he was doing, but very afraid that’s what was coming. She couldn’t live like that wondering if he was alive or dead, or if he’d come home in one piece.
“I have a son now, so you’d be in a ready-made family, rife with responsibility, because I will also be in school.
That’s
why I told you to sign a new contract—
not
because I
wanted
you to leave. I was
letting
you leave and doing that just about killed me,” he said, his voice choked. “I know now I can’t let you leave, Brat, but it’s up to you whether you are willing to take on this eighteen-year mission with me.”
“I can’t think of a man I’d rather have as a partner, or a mission I’d rather be on, Cade,” she replied, as she reached for the ring with her shaking hand and slid it on her finger. “But it’s not eighteen years—it’s till death do us part—remember that soldier.” Cee Cee smiled as she leaned toward him to sign her lifetime contract with a kiss.
