Heroic Abduction (18 page)

Nirvana hovered. Her body tightened. He drew her down for a kiss and murmured, “I love you.”

And as he took her once again over the edge of pleasure, she screamed, “
My hero.”

For now and forever.

Epilogue

“Never let anyone stand in the way of your happily ever after. And if someone dares, kill them.”
– A New Guide for the Heroic Mercenary

Returning to his home world proved more gratifying than expected. Dyre never knew how much he missed it until he got a glimpse of the white forests and the sandy plains surrounding his village. He also never realized how much he missed his parents, not that he’d admit it. As for the moisture in his eyes? That was caused by dust. Damned wind, always blowing on the space fields and making even the toughest warrior’s eyes water. Why, even his poor father suffered.

It was a great pleasure for Dyre to point out areas of interest to Betty, places where he’d grown up, such as the training fields and academy for warriors. She took a keen interest, peppering him with questions about his childhood and culture—while bouncing on his lap. A shame they shared the vehicle with others. He wouldn’t have minded going for a longer sightseeing drive. He would like to have shown her the reclining seats in the hovercraft and the retractable roof. He bet she would have cried out her enjoyment.

Maybe later.

His family home remained as he recalled—a red-bricked square adobe with a metal-shingled roof that sucked in the electricity from the solar rays and powered the interior. Nothing new to him, but a source of wonder to Betty, who skipped around touching things. Wait until she saw his bed. More like felt it, naked. He could pretty much guarantee she’d love the view of the ceiling in his room. Another thing that would have to wait for later, as it seemed his parents were intent on actually conversing. And, for once, it didn’t end in a yelling match.

“I’m so happy you turned over a new leaf,” his mother gushed.

Not really. Dyre still played the role of hero. He just wasn’t saving the universe anymore. Now he reserved his heroic antics for his mate. His beautiful barbarian mate, who couldn’t stay out of trouble and expected him to rescue her each time she got into a mess. Sometimes he swore she did it on purpose, probably because she loved him.

She made his life utterly perfect. He got to play the part of champion and reap the rewards—naked and usually more than once. Because of the trouble she got in that required him to protect her, he got to indulge his more savage mercenary side and, at the same time, his violent antics, which filtered back to his home world, pleased his parents enormously.

Especially his father. Dyre made enough of a name for himself that he earned forgiveness and a reversal on his banishment. Which, personally, Dyre could have done without but Betty claimed was a good thing.

We’ll see.

Yet again, she proved right though. Having the approval and pride of his parents did mean more than Dyre would have expected.
I never knew I craved it until I got it.

As Betty wandered farther into the house, his mother trailing her barbarian daughter-in-law—which had all her friends jealous considering their rarity—Dyre waited for his father to speak.

Then almost died of shock when he did.

“Glad to have you back, son.”

Dyre didn’t stagger at the slap his father bestowed upon his back. Sometime since his departure, he’d finally thickened and grown sturdy enough that the blows no longer rocked him. It didn’t take a genius Roc to see it drove his father insane. Especially when Dyre punched his father in salute on the upper shoulder and sent him reeling.

“Caught me off guard,” his father blustered as he righted himself.

“Of course I did,” was Dyre’s smug reply.

“So what are your plans now?” his father asked.

Judging by the roar coming from the yard, Betty’s shrieked “Dyre!”, and his mother’s screamed “Drayggo attack!” it sounded like the services of a hero were needed.

Time to go rescue his damsel. By all the gods in the universe, he loved his life and, even more, his mate.

The End (of this story, but I doubt we’ve seen the last of Clarabelle and her Barbarian.)
