He chuckled softly. “You’re everything I hoped, Camille. Everything I knew you would be.”
I raised my chin slightly, willing him to kiss me. I wanted to experience all of him, but he seemed to retreat.
“We should go,” he said abruptly.
The room seemed to swim. “What?” I said stupidly. What could he mean?
He straightened, stuffing his silk tie back in his suitcoat pocket and jerking his lapels into order.
“You head out first,” he said sensibly, “and I will circle around in the opposite direction.”
“No, William—” I stammered, nearly falling forward and then catching myself. “What about… This can’t be it!”
Suddenly I was flattened against the plaster again with my arms over my head. He pinned me immobile under his weight and glared fiercely at me.
“You. Do. Not. Command. Me!” he growled.
I shook my head desperately. “No! No… I— I just meant—”
“You just meant to tell me what to do?” he said archly.
I shook my head again and bit my tongue.
Just shut up!
I commanded myself.
“Oh now you don’t answer me?”
“No, William,” I stammered, desperate to figure out the right thing to say. Every part of my cried out for more. I didn’t want him to leave me here and go back to our former life.
Seeing my discomfort, he seemed to soften. As he drew slightly closer, I felt the warmth increase. Despite myself, I arched into that warmth like a plant turning toward the sun.
“I need to know I can trust you,” he whispered, his eyes gravely serious. I began to think that was a long process, one that I had barely begun. “I need to know that you…” he slid a hand down my arm, trailing his fingers lightly across my underarm, “are completely…” his fingers fell to my nipple and pinched it lightly through the lace, immediately pebbling it and sending sparks through my lungs, “mine.”
“I am!” I panted breathlessly, realizing the truth in the words as soon as I had spoken them. I had always been his, since my very first thoughts of being anybody’s.
He nodded absently, as though still unconvinced, and pinched my nipple until I had to bite back a yelp of discomfort.
“We’ll see,” he finally said. His eyes searched mine and I made myself totally open, hoping he could see what he needed to believe me. Then he raised his chin, planting a tender and lingering kiss on my forehead, and took a step back.
“We’ll see,” he said again with a cocky grin and turned on his heel, striding away down the dark hallway and disappearing around the corner while my heart shattered into a thousand noisy pieces.
