“Sure. Just keep me posted.”

Chapter Forty-seven

“You know, I just can’t wrap my mind around all this,” Sikes said as they walked to the bar. “Adams? Hell, he’s a grandfather.”

“John, you’ve been a cop long enough to have pretty much seen it all,” Sam said.

“Yeah, on the streets, maybe. But not in my own department. And not somebody as uptight and conservative as Richard Adams. It just doesn’t make sense.”

“This whole fucking case doesn’t make sense,” Tori said as she held the door open for them. “Marty? You here?”

A head popped up from behind the bar. “Over here, Detective.” He stood up, a broom and dust pan in his hand. “Just cleaning up a bit.”

They all looked around them. Smashed chairs littered the floor, and the mirror behind the bar was shattered.

“Jesus,” John murmured.

“Marty, this is Detective Kennedy and Detective Sikes,” she said, pointing at her two partners. “Just tell us everything that hap pened.”

“Okay. Maybe I should get the manager.”

“No. Let’s talk first.” Tori picked up a fallen bar stool and sat, motioning for the others to do the same. “What time did Adams come in?”

“Carl? He came in right after three.”

“Was the front door locked?”

“No. We open at three.”

“Anyone else here?”

“No. Just me and the manager.”

“Okay. What happened?”

“No way, Lieutenant. No way Adams was involved.”

“Donaldson, I’m not saying he was involved in the murders. But your investigation was compromised on the Branson case.” Malone stood, pacing behind his desk. “Didn’t you think it strange Adams wanted to close the case?”

“We didn’t have anything to go on.”

“I guess not! You didn’t fucking investigate it!” He turned on him then, pointing his finger. “And it’s my ass, too. I let it go down as a dead end. I didn’t check to make sure you’d covered all your bases. Hell, Donaldson, we have a serial killer to worry about. I’d like to think my detectives are professional enough to do their job without me going over every detail of every fucking case you’re working on!” Malone stared, feeling the blood pounding in his head. He jerked open his desk, pulling out his nearly empty bottle of antacids.

“I was just-”

“Following his lead, I know.” Malone sat back down, chewing the three tablets quickly. “Where is he, Donaldson?”

“I don’t know, Lieutenant. It’s not like we were close, you know.”

Malone shook his head. “Fucking makes no sense. If we don’t find him, you’re going to be left to take the blame, Donaldson.” He sighed. “You and me.”

They both looked up as Ramirez tapped on the glass. Malone motioned for him to enter.

“Sikes is on the line, Lieutenant.”

“Thanks. Tony, why don’t you get Donaldson up to speed on everything, huh?” Malone suggested, dismissing them as he reached for the phone. “We need all hands on deck for this one.” He waited until his door was closed before picking up.

“Yeah, Sikes. What you got?”

“Not much. Adams turned psycho and trashed the place pretty good. The manager called it in as a disgruntled customer. Apparently, Marty the bartender has a crush on Hunter or something. He’s not said a word about knowing
Carl
is really a cop.”

“I hope we can keep it that way for a while. The last thing we need is for this to hit the paper. We’ve got to find Adams, Sikes.”

“Yeah, I know. But we didn’t get shit. We’re heading back.”

Malone sighed, then reached for his bottle of aspirin, tossing three into his mouth before picking up the phone again.

“It’s Malone in Homicide. Detective Travis in?”

“Hey, why don’t we grab Tony and go get a drink or something?” Sikes suggested. “It’s been a hell of a long day.”

Tori was caught off guard. It occurred to her that in all her years on the force, this was the first time anyone had included her in their invitation for after-hours drinks. She was speechless.

Sam noticed her hesitation and was about to decline when Tori found her voice. “That’s a great idea, John. Thanks. I think we could all use a drink.”

Sam tried to hide her smile, but looked sideways at Tori, noticing her normal frown missing. She made a mental note to thank John later.

Sam was the one who felt they would be leaving Donaldson out if they didn’t invite him, but he declined, saying his wife was expecting him for dinner.

“But maybe next time, guys.”

“Sure, man.” Sikes shook his head as they walked to their cars. “One big happy family. Damn, Kennedy, see what you did.”

“Me?”

Their one drink turned into two with appetizers. There was little talk of the case, and Sam suspected they all were glad to push it to the back burner, if only for a few hours. She was amazed at the change in everyone. A few short months ago, Sikes and Hunter could hardly stand to be in the same room. Now, teasing as if they were best buddies. Sam had never seen Tori open up this much, show her true self to anyone else. It pleased her so to think that Tori was finally out of the darkness that had followed her for so many years.

When they were leaving, Sam pulled John aside.

“Thanks, John. This was a wonderful idea. Tori is finally… letting you in. Thanks for being open to that.”

“Like I said, she’s a different person. Hell, I like her.”

Sam laughed. “Yeah, she can have that effect on people.”

They smiled at each other silently as Tori and Ramirez walked over. Tori stared, a slow smile forming.

“What are you two whispering about?”

“Nothing,” Sam said quickly.

“Uh-huh.”

“Where are you guys staying tonight? Your apartment again?”

Tori shook her head. “No. I don’t know how Sam feels about it, but it’s depressing as hell there. We got a room.”

“Oh? Something fancy?”

“Fancy?” Sam laughed. “If you call the Dallas Inn fancy.”

“Well, be careful. You never know about this guy,” Sikes said. “Maybe you should take Malone up on his offer. It wouldn’t hurt to have a unit follow you around.”

“Worried about us, Sikes? Damn, you never used to be concerned about me,” Tori teased.

“Hell, Hunter. Not you. It’s Sam I’m worried about.”

Sam squeezed his arm affectionately. “Thanks, but we’ll be okay. Tomorrow we’ll hit the ground running.”

“Yeah we will. Okay, we’ll see you in the morning. Come on, Tony. Let’s let these two start their evening,” John said with a wink at Sam.

Tori stared as John’s laugh faded away. She turned to Sam and smiled.

“I guess we’re not being too subtle, huh?”

Sam laughed, linking arms with Tori as they walked across the street to Tori’s Explorer.

“Not too subtle, no. John and I had a little talk, actually. He’s… he’s okay, Tori.”

“Yeah, he is. Amazing.”

Chapter Forty-eight

Tori tossed both their bags on the bed and dutifully locked the door as Sam inspected the room. “This is nice.”

“Yeah. Better.”

“Your apartment wasn’t bad, Tori. At least it was clean.”

“That’s because I’m never there to dirty it. But it’s dark. And sparse.”

“Yeah. It wasn’t really you.”

“You don’t think?” Sam walked over, wrapping both arms around Tori and pulling her close. “No. I don’t see you like that. You’re all sunshine and fresh ness.” Tori laughed. “Sunshine, huh?” Sam turned serious as her hand brushed Tori’s cheek. “You’re my sunshine,” she said softly. “Don’t ever forget it.”

Tori’s heart skipped a beat at the love she found in Sam’s eyes. She would be so glad when this was all over and they could have some real time together. She bent her head to kiss her when Sam’s cell rang.

“Perfect timing, as always,” Sam murmured, pulling away. She checked caller ID, then groaned. “Robert.”

Tori raised her eyebrows, then moved away, but Sam pulled her back, letting it go to voice mail.

“I’d rather have a shower. Share?”

“Absolutely.”

Tori let out a satisfied moan as she lifted her face into the warm spray, closing her eyes as Sam’s soapy hands moved lightly over her back, then gasped as those same hands slipped around her and cupped her breasts. She felt Sam move close behind her, pressing her body intimately against her own. She covered Sam’s hands, holding them tight against her breasts as her eyes closed.

“Let me make love to you,” Sam whispered into her ear.

Tori groaned again as Sam slid one hand lower, pausing briefly at her belly before moving into damp curls. Tori’s legs parted and she jerked involuntarily as Sam’s fingers found her.

“I want you to come for me, Tori. Right here,” she murmured.

Tori was powerless to resist. Sam was pressed tightly against her buttocks, the warm water cascading over them both. One hand still held her breast captive and Tori moved against the other, trying to match the rhythm Sam had set. She finally moved her arms, bracing against the shower wall as Sam stroked her, feeling Sam grind into her from behind.

“Oh, God, Tori,” Sam murmured. Her hips had a will of their own as she pressed her hot center against Tori’s firm backside.

Tori was gasping now, feeling her own wetness mix with the warm mist around her, feeling Sam’s fingers as they moved quickly over her swollen clit, feeling Sam press harder and harder against her. She squeezed her eyes shut, drawing in a quick breath as her orgasm hit without warning, nearly buckling her knees. She turned, her hand going immediately to Sam, slipping between her legs, giving her the release she craved. Her mouth covered Sam’s, catching her scream as Sam’s hips finally stilled.

They stood together, arms wrapped tightly around each other as they caught their breath.

“I love you,” Sam murmured. “It’s never been like this for me, Tori.”

“Sam,” Tori breathed, unable to voice her feelings. Her heart nearly stopped every time Sam said those words, so afraid it would be the last time she heard them.

“I know, sweetheart. I know.” Sam pulled away, meeting Tori’s smoky eyes. She reached out and brushed the water away from Tori’s face. “I know.”

Tori only nodded, bending slowly to capture Sam’s lips.

“Come on. Bed.”

They were both tired, but as soon as Sam wound herself around Tori, her insatiable desire stirred. Her hands moved freely across Tori’s smooth skin, and she moaned as Tori found her mouth.

“I just can’t get enough of you.”

Tori wanted to tell her that it was she who couldn’t get enough, but her words died as Sam’s tongue found its way into her mouth. She rolled them over, pinning Sam with her weight as her mouth captured Sam’s breast. Sam’s moan was music to her ears, and she slipped a hand between them, searching for the wetness she knew she’d find.

“Please… I want your mouth on me,” Sam whispered.

“Yes, sweetheart, I want that, too.”

Tori moved lower, her mouth wetting a path across Sam’s stomach. Sam’s hands were urgent as they wound their way through her hair, urging her downward. She settled between Sam’s legs, one hand pushing her thighs apart. But just as her mouth found her, just as her tongue moved through her wetness, just as Sam’s hips rose to meet her, her cell rang.

“Jesus,” Sam hissed. “Not now.”

Tori groaned, but moved away from Sam, reaching blindly for her phone.

“Hunter.”

“I hope I’m not interrupting anything, bitch cop.”

Tori sat up, motioning quickly at Sam, pointing at her own cell. “Ricky? Is that you? Damn, your timing sucks, man.”

“I knew it. You’re just like all the others… just like her.”

“Where are you, Ricky?” Tori watched as Sam punched out Sikes’s number, waiting.

“You’ll never find me.”

“Okay. Then where’s Charlotte?”

“You won’t find her either. But I did leave a present for you, Detective. Just for you.”

Tori glanced once at Sam, listening as she whispered into her phone.

“You didn’t have to give me a present, Ricky. I think you’ve done enough.” His quiet laugh sent chills down her spine.

“Check the alley behind The Brickyard. And Detective, don’t think you can hide at the Dallas Inn again tomorrow.”

Tori tossed her cell down, then grabbed Sam’s.

“Sikes?”

“I’m here.”

“The alley behind The Brickyard. We’ll meet you there.”

“Okay, I’m on it.”

Tori was nearly shaking as she disconnected. She reached for Sam, embracing her.

“He’s knows we’re here,” she said quietly. “We’ve got to be careful. He may be watching.”

“Shit. What did he say?”

“He said he left me a present in the alley behind The Brickyard. And he said we shouldn’t hide here again tomorrow.”

“That son of a bitch!” Sam pulled away, pacing naked across the floor. “If I see the bastard, I’ll shoot him myself!”

Tori stared, a smile forming before she laughed outright. Sam stared at her.

“What?”

“You’re adorable.”

Sam put her hands on her hips, head cocked sideways as she watched Tori. Only then did it dawn on her that they were both completely naked. She blushed.

“Jesus, look at us.”

“Yeah, look at us.” Tori reached for her jeans. “Come on, Sam. We’ll call it in on the way.”

The flashing lights of a police unit guided them into the alley and Tori parked, looking for Sikes’s car.

“I don’t think he’s here yet,” Sam said.

“No. He lives in North Dallas.”

They both pulled out their shields, walking to the Dumpster that the two uniforms were gathered around.

“What we got?” Tori asked.

“Male victim. He’s… fuck, he’s decapitated.”

“Son of a bitch,” Sam whispered. “Did you call it in?”

“Yes ma’am. ME’s on the way.”

Tori peered into the Dumpster, her gasp bringing Sam to her side.

“Oh my God.”

“Jesus fucking Christ,” Tori murmured.

“You know him?”

Tori looked up, meeting the eyes of one of the officers. She nodded.

Blood covered his naked body. His stomach had been ripped opened, much like Rachel Anderson’s. His severed head was placed carefully on his torso.

“Jesus Christ,” she whispered again. She reached for her cell, finally turning away. “Sam?”
