Dear Kathy,

Sorry I haven’t written much to you, but I am somewhat nervous lately.
It seems the Gov is taking his time in making a decision about my case. But that’s good in the long run though.
Also, I have received numerous letters from all over. They are from Doctors who want to exam me. If only the Gov would go for it. Then, the Drs could use what they learn from me, to help others before it’s too late.
But there are a handful of people who think it’s a waste of time and money to do that to me. They just as soon see me killed in the chair. But they don’t realize how beneficial it could be to other people, before they do what I did. That’s the way I see it Kathy. Maybe you see it differently. The Doctors see it my way though, and my attorney does too. Who knows what the Gov may do or say about my case. But there is one thing though, he—Gov Graham, wants more proof about the doctors before he says anything. So it might happen.
Guess you had a good time at The Pointer Sisters concert. How many was there? Bet both shows were a sellout.
I’m surprised you went to see them, cause you told me you like Country Western.
Guess everything can get back to normal, now Spring Break ’86 is over.
I have made myself a blanket/afghan for my bed. It’s orange and light rose trim. Really sets my cell off good.
Well, guess I’ll close for now. Please drop me a line when you get time.

I now realize that Stano was using the same tactic as Ted Bundy in prolonging his stay of execution. Bundy, too, argued that justice would be better served by having physicians examine his brain.

Kathy,

This is just a note to say “thank you” for the picture of The Pointer Sisters. I really appreciate that very much.
It sounds like you are on call 24 hrs a day with your job. But they couldn’t find a better person for the job though.
Kathy, this waiting period now, is really taking it’s toll on me hard. I wish he (the Gov.) would tell my attorney what he wants to do further, or to sign my warrant. It is got my mother very upset also. I worry about her, due to her bad heart.
By the way, how is the book coming? Getting anywhere?
If you remember, please tell Paul to drop me a line. He is probably very busy these days. Paul is one heck of a nice person, Kathy.
It looks like Gov Graham got one of us the other day at 12 noon. After it was over, they have the nerve to bring visitors. They don’t care about our feelings when they have an execution. All they care about is themselfs [

]. But we have to stick with each other and hope for the best.
Well, I better let you get back to work. I know you are very busy these days, and I appreciate a note now and then.

Respectfully,
Jerry

Dear Kathy,

I wanted to write you because of what happened today.
It was 11: 00 a.m. when they came to my door, and said I had a “call-out.” I was then escorted to the office, where I was then told that the Governor signed my warrant.
They talked to me about the news media, and if I wanted to talk to them. As it turns out, I can’t even call you. Just my family and my attorney. Visits are for my family only, and my attorney too.
It seems we will have to write to each other, until I get back to the regular wing.
When I called home, my mother took it better than I figured. They are allowed to visit 12 hours a week, and I can call them only 2x’s a week.
It was a shock when they came to my door, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be, Kathy. I have all my property, t.v., and especially my stereo with headphones. But I can’t have any contact visits with my family, except for my attorney.
Please tell Paul to write me. I don’t want to send him a letter because they might think that something is up.
This is not what you call “having a good time.”
I am a nervous wreck right now. But I am trying to make the best of it, Kathy.
If they put anything in the paper about me, would you please send it to me? I am quite sure they will have a big article in there.
Well, I’ve got to close, don’t want to keep you any longer. You are a very busy woman.
Please write me soon.

Truly yours,
Jerry

P.S. Tell Paul to write me soon.

Wednesday p.m.

Kathy,

I thank you for your letter and the clippings.
As for my cell, I am only 30–40 feet away from the electric chair. I am with Ted Bundy. There are only three cells on each side. The middle one is empty at all times. I have all of my property, radio, headphones and t.v., plus we get canteen every night too. We are allowed to make 2 phone calls home per week, and can call our attorneys when needed, and they can call us any time.
I just got my attorney today from CCR [Capital Collateral Review]. I am waiting to hear how they want to proceed with my case.
It sounds like you had a beautiful 2 week vacation. What part of Pennsylvania did you go to?
Kathy, as for our interviews, like before, please call Mr. D.H. Mathis. He is in charge of Death Watch. Explain that we used to have interviews, and maybe something can be worked out. But I doubt it very much, Kathy, because they are very tight on us now at this point.
When I visit my parents, it is behind glass now. Only my attorney is allowed a contact visit.
Please tell Paul to write to me. It would be better this way, cause I don’t want them to think I am doing something.
I want to apologize for the short letter I wrote, but I had just found out about the Gov signing my warrant that morning. It took me 2 days to calm down from that. Even my parents took it okay. I was worried about my mother.
Well, guess I’ll close for now—write soon, please, Kathy.

Respectfully,
Jerry

Kathy;

I was very aware of the interview you called in about, but
I am not granting any more.
I have had my share of insults, news media portraying me the wrong way, etc.
Plus, they hound my family to no end also.
Kathy, I am in a position now, that is very crucial in my life. Most people could care less about me. But, I can’t go down without a fight.
It seems to me, I should have never talked to any media to start with. But, Paul Crow and Donald Jacobson started all of that some 6 years ago.
This has nothing to do with you, but I have to put my foot down now. I’m sorry, but that is the way it has to be. This goes for everybody (all news media) included.
Besides, some man has already written a book from the West Coast, and it is going to be published in September of this year. What can I say Kathy.
Well, guess I’ll close at this time.
Jerry

Kathy,

I got your letter today, thanks for writing.
I am sorry, but I am going to have to stop writing, and ask you not to arrange any more visits. It is my decision and my attorney’s too. I’m sorry but it has to be that way Kathy.
I am on Death Watch with Ted Bundy. Yes, we talk to each other. Plus, we have our t.v.’s, radios and property.
As for Paul, I am not talking to him either. My lawyer is handling that (Paul.)
By the way, somebody has already beaten you to writing a book. I found out through the mail about it.
You are a very good reporter, Kathy. And I acknowledge you for it. You are also very cute, too. If your boyfriend cannot see that, he is crazy.
Well, I’ve got to run. My song is on the radio—“Just A Gigolo,” by David Lee Roth.

Jerry
His favorite song was about a gigolo, which is how Gerald Stano seemed to perceive himself. He described me as “very cute.” But those women who climbed in his car and never got out fell in another category—bad girls. After all, would they have been out there alone if they hadn’t been “asking for it”?
Gerald Stano never wrote me again after this last letter, and I don’t know if he ever quite prepared himself for death. From his letters to me, I don’t think he ever believed that he deserved to die. He only thought his victims did.
