“You okay?” Maggie asked helping up Alex to her feet.

“Yeah, I’m good.” She said.

“No time to waste.” Benny said.

Alex tossed the other rifle over her back and climb down the ladder. They only had a few minutes before the monsters realized that they weren’t in there. She hopped off the last step and looked up she could see Petey and Maggie already making their way down and Benny in position. She raised her gun readying herself.

“Get to the car!” Alex shot a zombie in the head.

Petey nodded and grabbed Maggie by the arm. Pushing her to the nearest vehicle they could find. Alex stayed at the bottom of the ladder waiting for Benny to climb down. He covered them as the pair moved swiftly to the humvee. He knew every time he and Alex fired their weapons they were drawing more attention to them but it was their only option.

“They’re in.” Benny uttered.

Throwing his weapon onto his back he slid down the ladder in one swift motion. He swore he heard Alex mutter ‘show-off’ but just smirked. He pulled out his gun this time and readied himself as it was their turn to get to the vehicle.

Just like they thought the gunfire had given them some unwanted attention. Benny stopped to shoot a few creatures in the head that had come to close. Knowing her aim sucked, Alex abandoned the gun in her hand and whipped out the machete that rested to the side of her leg in comfort. Not missing a beat she swung removing the head of any creature that came to close. Clearing their own path the two attempted to move quickly on taking stops to use their weapons.

“Shit!” Alex looked back at the sound. Benny had been knocked to the ground, using his rifle as a barrier protecting himself as the creature snapped his teeth at him, wanting a bite.

“Go!” He yelled.

Alex knew what she needed to do and she did not hesitate as she ran towards the fallen man. She jabbed the monster’s head with her machete and yanked it off. Pulling the man up roughly, she pushed him towards the vehicle, forcing him to enter the backseat before her. Slamming her machete one last time before getting herself and slamming the door.

“Go! Go!” Alex shouted.

Petey stepped on the gas making the humvee speed off. The two in back breathed heavily before laughing loudly, the laugh becoming infectious the other two in the front seat began laughing as well. Petey cheered as he hit the roof of the humvee in celebration. They had gotten out alive, with supplies and with each other.

Alex calmed and turned towards the Benny. “You okay there, Darling?”

He took pleasure in hearing the happy tone that came with his last name. He rubbed his chin and smiled brightly.

“I’m just dandy. Thank you.”

“Return the favor when you can.” She patted his knee before leaning back willing her heart to slow.

The vehicle protested after only a few hours. Spewing smoke from its engine forcing them to pull over. They popped open the hood to that their mode of transportation was no longer of use.

“What now?” Maggie groaned.

They all turned their heads towards Alex as she shut her eyes in thought. She took a deep breath in a let the cold air fill her lungs as fought down the panic and swallowed the anxiety. Opening her eyes again to look at the worried but trust faces, she smiled. She smiled not only with her lips but also with her eyes.

“We keep going.”

And with those words this is where the story begins.

Thanks for all those who finished my story. I originally wrote this for my sister but now I got to share it with you all. Hopefully you’ll stick around for the rest of the series to see if the sisters ever reunite.
